Loved this. Best in the enjoyable series so far - and great that our protagonist has returned to his New York roots. Very convincing, with entertaining dialogue and a good plot.
There May Be Trouble Ahead…
Foggy Moskowitz, amateur sleuth, is back in New York and it’s not long before he runs into an old friend and is, albeit reluctantly, dragged into the criminal underworld of the City. Understandably, there may be trouble ahead.. Entertaining and fast paced with a glorious cast of colourful characters. Enjoyable escapism.
Yet another novelist new to me, but certainly one I will seek out. The author now lives in the Clayton County area of the south of USA. He is a prolific author of books and plays. One of his series is set in Atlanta, whilst this one has been set in Florida, but this time Foggy Moscowitz is returning to New York.
It's 1976 and Foggy has built a reputation as a Child Protection officer. However he left Brooklyn under a cloud, with a warrant for his arrest. This trip he books into a good Manhattan hotel and want to enjoy some good Jazz and also visit his mother. However he hadn't planned on his old friend Sammy two shoes Cohen bringing trouble. Sammy is in love with Phoebe who works as a Stage Manager at a local theatre. They are currently showing Hamlet with an all girl cast. One of the cast is causing trouble and threatening Phoebe. Sammy wants Foggy to get the girl to stop. Simple enough, however there is a murder. Phoebe is jailed and Sammy is on the run.
Full of great characters. Foggy's mother has cancer, his aunt Shayna knows all the local gangs and is involved in various nefarious schemes. A local gang leader who hates Sammy, and of course the female cast.
Excellent writing, full of literary quotes. Great to hear about some of the Jazz and Folk music greats. Much of it is set in the theatre which is great as well as New York one of my favourite cities.
I've already downloaded the first of the Flap Tucker mysteries, so I will certainly add this author to my favourites. Very well recommended. Why is he called Sammy two shoes? You'll have to buy the book to find out!
Sammy Two Shoes is the fifth novel in Depoy’s quirky offbeat Foggy Moscowitz series which has a Brooklyn-born car thief who absconded to Florida rather than face the music and found himself as a proud member of Florida’s Child Protective Services. The premise is goofy, but the stories are entertaining. Dying for good deli food, Foggy, with a warrant still pending for his arrest in New York, returns to the big city only to be enlisted to investigate a goings-on at a Broadway play, which, wait for it, is an all-female cast version of Hamlet. Of course, it becomes a murder case with an entire cast of suspects. But don’t think it’s a cozy Broadway mystery. It’s a goofy, offbeat crime story with a constantly moving plot. Read the s one for fun, not to be taken too seriously.
Foggy went way too far to the criminal side in this story for me. I enjoy this series so much more when I can at least smile while strange things are happening in the swamp outside of Fry's Bay, Florida, where Foggy Moscowitz is the agent in the area for Florida Child Protective Services. The other stories in this series lean waaay far away from the serious even though some serious things happen in each book. Foggy is an agent with FCPS completely without any justification or explanation because Foggy is a small time criminal who ended up in Florida after he stole a car in New York which turned out to have a young child in the back seat. The kid's okay, but Foggy has been paying penance ever since and trying to make up for all the trouble he caused as he is, technically, hiding out. The books have been a little off center, a little tongue in cheek, unrealistic as can be, but fun to read because of the methods Foggy uses to solve the crimes he comes across and the off-beat characters he meets.
Sammy Two Shoes has too much crime in it and it wasn't fun for me to read about. Bullets flying everywhere, a person being killed in an odd way that made me shake my head in disbelief, family secrets unfolding that are all heavy to deal with, definitely not something to smile about while I was reading. I don't like Foggy in New York. The author has asked readers to vote on whether Foggy should go back to Fry's Bay or stay in New Your. Back please - because this story made me dither around trying to decide on 2 stars or 3 and 2.5 was not an option.
Thank you to NetGalley and Canongate Books Severn House for an e-galley of this novel.
What can you say, this is a foggy book so you know it is going to be good. But on the flip side I am not sure about him going to back to New York! I really hope he doesn’t stay as that would be a bit disappointing to me. I love what he does in FlorIida and hope he continues but all that said I will still keep a lookout for books in this series as they are always a great read
