I wasn’t really able to get into this book at this time unfortunately.. I plan to try reading it again down the road though.
I don't know why this took so long for me to get into. Once I was in it though, I couldn't put it down.
This was such a wonderful, nostalgic ride. I loved that it seemed like such a plausible continuation to the series that I grew up on and loved. I loved meeting all of the new Scoobies and getting to see so many of the old crew. I cannot wait for book 2 to see what happens next!
This was the best way to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It felt true to the series but even better than the original. I can't wait to read more.
In Every Generation is a great book to reintroduce Sunnydale to a new generation of potential fans, and bring old Buffy fans back to their nostalgic high school. This new generation is focused on new slayers, the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High and town over the dormant Hellmouth, and the reemergence of demons and vampires. It was a fun book, lots of familiar characters and throw backs but not too much where you could still pick it up as a new fan. I hope it brings more people to the fandom.
In Every Generation tells the story of Frankie Rosenberg, daughter of Willow, becoming a slayer in a world where all of the slayers called in the last season of the show have been presumably murdered. The book features several favorite characters from the original series with mentions of others. Obviously Willow plays a large part with Oz and Spike being prominently featured as well. I liked Frankie and I liked her friends. Blake did a pretty good job imitating the Whedon-esque banter. Where I struggled with this book is that Buffy is dated. I wish this had distanced itself more from the original Scooby Gang. It’s hard to see Spike as a watcher when all I can think about is how he treated Buffy on the show. You don’t have to have seen BtVS to read the book, but it certainly helps, and I think right now Joss Whedon doesn’t deserve ANY publicity.
I’m not the biggest fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but I have seen it when I was younger so I thought I would enjoy this, but this book was just not for me. I did however enjoy Kendare Blake’s writing as per usual.
I've been a HUGE Buffy fan since the show premiered when I was in high school, but I've always been a purist - I've never read any of the fan fiction, graphic mags, etc. - the show was always enough for me. However, when I saw that this was written by Kendare Blake, I knew I had to give it a try!
It's obvious that Blake knows her Buffy - the details, the backstory, even the personalities of the characters - are all perfection. It did take me a while to get into because, for the most part, the book deals with a new, younger generation of characters, but the plot was just like something that would have been featured on the episode of a show. I think the author did a great job bringing a new cast of characters to life, and while the old cast and TV show will always be my favorite, there was very little to complain about here.
More from the Buffy-verse?! Yes please! It's nice to see a slayer for a new generation-complete with her very own Scoobies. Teens and adult fans of the original will love being back in Sunnydale.
For Libraries: A perfect fit for your YA collections. But you might also want to make sure that you have the complete series too because this is undoubtedly going to increase it's circulation. (But put a price watch on it because right now it is selling for crazy high!)
"Calling all Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans: Kendare Blake, author of the much-praised Three Dark Crowns series, writes of the newest slayer in town. Frankie is happily doing a spell to aid in the recycling efforts at her high school when she passes out. When she wakes up, she’s shocked by two things: 1. Her aunt, the greatest vampire slayer of all time, is supposedly dead. And 2. Frankie is next in line to lead the charge in slaying. Throw in missing relatives, friendly witches and werewolves, and a quest to keep world peace, and you’ve got In Every Generation."
I requested (and have purchased) this book because I love the author. When it was first announced, for the first time I started binging Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the TV show. I was hoping I'd have time to watch it all by the time the book was released. Then Kendare said you don't have to have watched the show to enjoy the book, so I slowed my viewing and watched other things... I was partway through season 2 when I picked this book up. And it spoiled EVERYTHING about the show, all the way to the end. That's my fault, but I was really enjoying the show and now I'm sad. I really wish I'd binged it all before picking up In Every Generation.
This book has a huge cast, a mash-up between canon and original characters, and they all have vital roles in the story. But I don't think someone unfamiliar with Buffy will care about them because they're all clearly preexisting characters with preestablished relationships. You really feel like you're thrown into the middle of things and if you haven't watched the show, you may really not like this book. There were times I didn't even like it, but mostly when they were spoiling things I hadn't found out in the show yet.
The new characters were good. The overall plot was awesome! The main villain was the perfect nemesis to bring to life...er...unlife. I loved the ending. And it left me curious to see how the mystery concludes. I'm definitely going to continue this series. But I do not have the happy, nostalgic feelings that other readers who grew up with Buffy have. When I was a teen, I saw the Buffy movie. I never watched the TV show, though. It was probably on cable and I didn't have access to that, growing up. We had 3 channels and no internet back then. lol
My second biggest complaint, after the way the book kind of ruined the show for me, is that the romance was not interesting. Everybody in this book gets into some kind of relationship or wants to be in one or is pining over a former one. And I couldn't really picture any of the characters together that way so it was just weird to me. I wasn't rooting for any of the couples. Romance is my favorite thing in a book but it was just lackluster in this story.
My plan now is to finish binging Buffy (the show) over the next year, then to reread this book again, and continue on with the second. I'm always going to support Kendare but I do not think this book would be very appealing to non-Buffy fans because all the worldbuilding and half the cast is from a show you would know nothing about.
I would love to give real feedback but I accidentally deleted the book and since it’s been archived I can’t download it again. It sounds like a book that I would have liked and I do plan to pick it up in the future.
As a HUGE BTVS fan this book was an absolute must on my list of TBR and it was as delightful and nostalgic and perfect as I wanted it to be from page one. It had the absolute flavor of the show, the quippy, humorous elements and the big bads without feeling like a rehash. Absolutely stellar for someone who grew up with the show or for someone new to the Sunnydale world. Chef's kiss!
4/5 stars. I have absolutely loved coming back into the Slayerverse. I've missed all of the witty banter, character relationships, and ass-kicking! The chapter headers were one of my favorite elements, and this felt new a fresh while also staying true to the original storyline, and just expanding upon it. Well done!
The majority of this book was light hearted despite the grim and evil enemies, the lost loved ones, and the growing mystery behind the disappeared slayers and Sunnydale virgins. The banter between characters was on par with the show, full of fun puns and quick one liners. It was just the right amount of cheesy. Now that I've had time to think it through, from about the 60% mark onward, my investment in the story lessened in comparison to how it felt in the first 60%. I feel like Frankie's inner character and training could've been fleshed out a bit more, as well as the fights/battles with the Countess' vampire hoards. Some parts of it felt really quick, while the in between scenes seemed to linger. This was in now way unenjoyable, it was still a fun read and I will definitely read the second installment! Just hoping that things will be dialed in a bit more in the sequel.
Thank you so much to Disney-Hyperion and Netgalley for letting me read an ARC of In Every Generation! I grew up watching Buffy and absolutely loved it, so was SUPER excited for this book and it did not disappoint! Great continuation of the series - enjoyed it so much I went out and bought a hardback copy immediately!
Thank you so much to Disney-Hyperion and Netgalley for letting me read an ARC of In Every Generation! I've never actually seen an episode of Buffy, but I've always wanted to be a Buffy person, so I would like read people's discussions about the show on Tumblr and all the Gifs, so I feel like I kinda know the basics? Anyway, use that as the basis for my knowledge of the source material as you go into my review.
In Every Generation 4/5 Stars
Summary from Goodreads:
A new Slayer for a new generation...
Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers—including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi—might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born.
But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next.
Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!
The first in an all-new series by New York Times best-selling author Kendare Blake continues the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer featuring the next generation of Scoobies and Slayers who must defeat a powerful new evil.
So after reading this book, I definitely want to go and watch all of Buffy (side note, apparently seasons 1-7 are on Prime Video if you have that, so that's probably how I'm going to go and watch Buffy soon). It definitely seemed like an homage to the original, but in a good way where even though I hadn't ever actually seen Buffy, I still really enjoyed In Every Generation. I really liked some of our characters- specifically Hailey and Jake- and I heard we're going to have a second book, so I'm looking forward to seeing where book two takes us! I really liked the concept of Frankie being awakened as a new Slayer because all of the old Slayers are either dead or missing and the Hellmouth is opening again. Yay for a chosen one! I thought the pacing was a little interesting at times (in that I was a little bored every once in a while and I did have whiplash every once in a while), but I think that might be more from me not having real ties to Buffy. Overall, this was a really fun book and I'm excited for everyone to read it!
Thank you to netgalley for providing an e-galley for review. In Every Generation is Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a new generation and I'm all for it. There are familiar characters, like Willow and Oz, but we are introduced to a new slayer-witch hybrid and the vamps better watch out! Complete with cheesy one liners and action and vamp dusting, it's the Buffy 2.0 we've all been waiting for.
I have to say this wasn’t the worst Buffy the vampire slayer continuation story that I’ve read but I still didn’t love it. The writing just wasn’t for me. Some of the plot is alright and it kind of reminded me of a Buffy episode but it’s still nothing like the original. The characters that we meet in this book were fine but some of the characters that come from Buffy just didn’t seem like themselves though I do think the author did a fantastic job getting Spike right. I don’t know for sure if I would continue with this series but I’m still intrigued on what happened to the slayers so who knows I still might give it a shot
Omg! I enjoyed this book So much! It brought back wonderful memories for me! I could live in the Buffyverse forever. This author brought it all back for me, Spike is my favorite character and they captured his personality and mannerisms perfectly. I would love to read more by this author. Omg! You wrote a Buffy book!
Fun Buffy the Vampire Slayer action-adventure with a mystery at the core. New Slayer is awakened after a mysterious tragedy happens at SlayerFest. Enough references to appeal to original fans, as well as enough teen appeal to lure new fans. The choice to take the POV of some of the original characters like Willow is interesting and I wonder how it will land.
Kendare Blake is a big favorite of mine. I have loved the darkness and creativity that comes from her brain. It's interesting to see her try to fit in the Buffyverse, and I was worried at first, but all you have to do is read the first page of this book and you'll be completely hooked. As a long-time Buffy fan growing up, I love that we're getting more books in this world. It's just a bit nostalgic but fun and new and compelling. There are a few things that I anticipate there being some criticism about, but we have to remember the box in which the author had to work.
