A friend of mine is who introduced me to the Buffyverse way back in my high school days. When I saw this book, I immediately thought of that friend.
Frankie, daughter of Buffy's powerful witch friend Willow, lives with her mom at new Sunnydale. When an explosion at a Slayers' meeting leaves Frankie as the first-ever Slayer-Witch, she must stop the evil forces threatening to take over Sunnydale. With the help of her vampire-Watcher Spike, Oz's werewolf relative Jake, Hailey (half-sister of missing Slayer Vi), and half-Sage demon Sigmund, she does battle with the vampires of Sunnydale, and a surprising new evil (for history fans - and I'm not talking about the history of the show).
I wouldn't say I was ever a HUGE fan of Buffy, but this book series is really interesting and I could DEFINITELY see it being a spin-off/next-generation type show. It's action-packed, and has the enjoyment the beginning of the series brought with some new modern updates to it.
I laughed when I read Spike was going to be the Watcher. It’s because I saw the show, so fans of the show know what I’m saying. I NEVER thought HE would be the watcher.
This is a good supernatural, action pack book and good for fans of that genre, or fans of the show. I’m DEFINITELY picking up the next two books, and know this is one that the above-mentioned friend of mine would LOVE to read.

Would I recommend? Yes!
A continuation of the Buffy-verse is in good hands with Kendare Blake. In Every Generation introduces the first slayer called in many years, Frankie, who also happens to be the witchy daughter of Willow Rosenberg. I loved that this book introduced new characters very organically and seamlessly and connected them to the original characters in ways that made sense. I loved seeing what many of the original characters are up to now. I enjoyed how the writing captured the tone and language of the original series and reading this felt like watching episodes of the show. It felt like a nod to the original without being heavy handed. I had some nitpicks with the story line (some of the plans/schemes felt nonsensical and the story of Frankie’s conception felt very weird/a bit wrong) but overall I was entertained and I am looking forward to more books in this series!
BTVS will forever be one of my favorite things. So, when this book was announced and I found out the universe was expanding, it jumped the top of my highly anticipated TBR. I've never read a Kendare Blake before this but I have heard such good things.

A new slayer for a new generation...
IN EVERY GENERATION doesn't follow all of old Scoobies, but some appearances are made (Spike, Willow, Oz, Xander). It follows Willows daughter Frankie Rosenberg who is a self proclaimed Slayer-Witch. Together with her own group of scoobies she must learn to control her powers because a new big bad has arrived in Sunnydale and she needs to find out what happened to the other slayers.
As a die hard BTVS / Angel fan I wanted to love this book so much, but sadly it missed the mark for me because it felt like fan fiction. I expected so much more from it than it delivered. Despite the fact that this book definitely had some issues for me, I am going to give the next book a chance.
Things I enjoyed about IN EVERY GENERATION- I think Kendare Blake did an excellent job staying true to the original Buffy humor and writing style. Jake was my favorite new scooby.
I enjoyed the audiobook version more than the e arc and think the narrator did well.
Thank you Netgalley, Disney Audiobooks, and Disney Hyperion for allowing me access to this ALC/ EARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was given this book from the publisher via in return for an honest review. I'd give it 3.75 stars. I've always loved both Buffy and Angel so I figured I'd love this too. It was great to see familiar charters like Spike, Willow and Oz among others.
One of my big complaints is that it gets a little campy and juvenile around certain characters. I didn't like that the author constantly tried to make Oz and Jake seem "dog like". Constantly being described as having an "invisible tail" or such when excited.
The second would be Frankie and Willows constant references to eco witching. I thought this was weird and took away from the characters. Made them seem off somehow.
I liked being brought back to the world of Buffy and Sunnydale. It was nice to relive some of the show and major events.
There were some big plot holes left unanswered. And lots of characters just running off. Seemed very not Buffy universe.
Over all the story was okay but I think it could've been better. I don't think you'll hate it if you read it but I have read better Buffy crossovers.
This book was fantastic! I had flashbacks to the original series while being able to enjoy a new story and the new characters. There’s room for multiple reboots of the series and this would be a great tv show.
In Every Generation was everything I wanted and everything I didn’t KNOW I wanted. Canon is kind of messy (the rights have changed hands a few times and there have been comics and other books written in the world) so I wasn’t sure where this book would pick up. This is the reboot we all need.
I was not expecting to see Oz and that just thrilled me. Also I loved the new scoobies AND Grimloch. I am very anxious about where the Slayers are. Where’s Faith – I need her in my life. Can't wait for what comes next!
If you are a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer you will love this book! I absolutely love Kendare Blake's writing style and have started reading Anna Dressed in Blood.
The beginning started off slow but it picked up a quarter towards the middle and I actually ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. The writing is easy to get into and would definitely say it would be a great and fun read for MG and YA readers. I also enjoyed the throwbacks and mentions of Buffy, Willow, Zander, and Angel ABSOLUTELY adored it. It was a great and very enjoyable read!
Kendare Blake takes on the famous vampire vehicle, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Taking place after the show, In Every Generation shows the next generation of Slayers and how they came into relevance. Featuring many of our favorite Buffy characters, this book is good for nostalgia and for an interesting new story.
I want to start off by saying that I definitely wasn't the target audience for this book. I never watched Buffy so a lot of the references and even characters went over my head. However this was a good young adult read about a young girl find her way and her powers.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an hones review!
I grew up on Buffy. It taught me to be tough, fight for what's right, and to make your own family. I am thrilled it is being reimagined for a new audience!
I really enjoyed this book! It's exactly what I wanted from a Buffy-verse novel. From the familiar characters to the snark and banter, it felt like returning to a world I've loved. I'm really excited to continue the series!
Thanks to NetGalley & Disney Publishing Worldwide for the early copy in exchange for an honest review. Sadly, I left this at 20%.
This book follows years after the events of the original Buffy: The Vampire Slayer TV show and follows one of the main character's daughter entering her new role as the next Vampire Slayer.
Willow's writing was incredibly disappointing and her whole weird "will-they-won't-they" with Oz was weird considering the show ended with her as a lesbian. She also got magically pregnant from...magic, I guess? Kind of creeped me out.
Spike's writing was spot on at least and the book was quick-witted and snippy, I just felt like there wasn't a lot of heart behind it.
This was so much fun! I came to Buffy and Angel when they were both mid-lifespan. I was in law school, desperate for distractions from thick heavy tomes and any entertainment that didn't require a lot of cash. My local Blockbuster had 99-cent Tuesday rentals, and you could rent an entire season of a TV show for that 99 cents so I caught myself up quickly and then eagerly tuned in for new episodes of both every week.
Needless to say as a result the show really stuck with me. The characters resonated, the plots were a great mix of creepy and wacky and funny. Blake's newest book picks right up where the show left off, and feels as though it could have been written by the show's writers. The characterizations ring true. The language and settings do also. It's zany and silly and serious in turns, as was the original, and ithink it's a fabulous and fun addition to the Buffyverse.
I cannot wait for the next two books in the trilogy and do hope they run a spin-off TV show because I think there are a lot of great opportunities. I loved the way existing characters were built in, the way doors were left open for continuing plot lines, and enjoyed seeing new and long- standing characters come back to life, however briefly.
The writing was easy to fall into and the story engaged made from start to finish. It was written as though it were ready to be produced on television. Some people don't like that, but in this instance with this universe that didn't bother me at all and I read it as though I were getting ready to watch it in my brain. It worked for me and was exactly what I needed after a run of very serious reads!
“Into every generation, there is a Chosen One. One girl in all the world. She alone will wield the strength and skill to stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers. She is the Slayer.”

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. HUGE. As in I own the entire series on DVD (yeah, remember those old things?) and routinely play them in the background while I'm cleaning, getting ready for the day or to go out, or when I want comfortable coziness. I love all things Buffyverse. Sooooo, when I hear of anything related to Buffy, I leap. That is what I did when I got a chance to read this book. And because I'm such a fan, I will both giddily gush with excitement, and be dramatically picky, about all new things "Buffy" in this review.
So let's get to the book. Set in a new and allegedly demon-free Sunnydale, Frankie Rosenberg is the 16 year old daughter of witch extraordinaire Willow. Frankie is passionate about the environment and is using her newly developing witchy skills to help the world. She's friends with werewolf Jake, who is the nephew of Oz. Oz has returned to Sunnydale to watch over Jake ever since Jake's parents took their other son (and the one that bit Oz and made him a werewolf) to an exclusive wolf community. Together Frankie and Jake navigate typical high school stuff, something that past Sunnydale High alumni never got a chance to do - ya know, with all the death, demons and killing and all.
Their nirvana is abruptly shattered when Willow gets a call from Xander saying that a convention, at which all living slayers attended, exploded, presumably killing every slayer in existence, including Buffy and Faith. Xander and Dawn are at the site looking for survivors, and Willow and Oz stay helplessly in Sunnydale waiting for news. At the same time, Frankie feels a surge in her body and passes out at school. When she awakes Spike is in town with Hailey, the sister of missing slayer Vi, and Frankie is the new Chosen One.
New Scoobies unite! With Frankie a woefully unprepared slayer and Spike her less than stellar Watcher, Frankie can use all the help she can get. Hailey is not formally trained, but has gotten into enough fights to take a punch and give one back. She's laser focused on finding out what happened to her sister and will do anything that may help in the cause. Jake is big, strong and loyal. Often impulsive, he doesn't hesitate to jump into a fight. Lending a hand with research and portal magic knowledge, new character and sage demon Sigmund, is the son of Willow's friend. He's smart but doesn't fight, at all, and has a tendency to jet when the fists start flying.
The new Big Bad. Is sadly lacking in character development, depth and well, "badness". Without going into too much detail, there was nothing scary about the Big Bad other than what is typically scary about vampires and demons. The Big Bad seemed to be thrown in as an afterthought to give Frankie a big obstacle to overcome, but I'd much rather have read more about her training and her and the new Scoobie's character development (which was sorely lacking) and have her overcome smaller obstacles, than a less-than scary, kind of silly, Big Bad. I mean, who can forget Snake- Mayor and the Ascension?!
Because this review is already so very long, let me just hit you with some likes and dislikes:
Likes:
We're back in the Buffyverse, baby!!
The old Scoobies.
The language and cadence used by the author felt very "Buffy" the show.
There are several "Easter eggs" throughout the book that are clearly apparent to any Buffy fan.
Jake and Hailey - but they need more character development.
Sigmund - kind of. Something just seems off about him and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. But perhaps I'm just too suspicious by nature...
Mysterious Demon - yeah. tell me more....:-)
Dislikes
The new Big Bad - see above
Spike - as in Need.More.Spike.
Ditto for Xander and Dawn. Off-screen action is not a good look for either of them.
The author's obsession with virgins. You'll know what I mean when you read it.
Willow and Oz "coziness??" - Um, no. nyet. uh uh.
Frankie's father - WHAT?! {scratches head and gazes off into the distance}.
The author's fighting scenes. Perhaps I've been spoiled by too many fantasy novels, but the fighting scenes here are tough to read. For a book about a girl fighting demons, this area needs to smooth out. A lot.
If you like Buffy, you'll like this book. Hopefully the second book will improve on certain areas now that the author has the first one under her belt. Don't get me wrong, it's a good book and I recommend you read it, but there's room for improvement. I, for one, look forward to reading the next book in what I hope will be a long series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Disney Publishing Worldwide, Hyperion. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley for a digital ARC of In Every Generation by Kendare Blake!
As a HUGE Buffy fan, I was very excited to read this book! I did have apprehensions about whether it would hold up to the BTVS universe, and I have mixed feelings about this book.
I loved how the author kept true to the classic Buffy humor and essence of the show as well as creating wonderful new characters but still paying respect to the original characters. I did not enjoy how unfinished the book felt. There were still a lot of unanswered questions by the end of the book and that was disappointing. But if you are a Buffy fan, you should give this a read. There is plenty of amazing Buffy references that will have you laughing throughout the book.
As someone who LOVES Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this sadly missed the mark for me? it was nice catching up with some of my favorite characters but this story moved really slow for me and i just didn't really root for alot of the characters.
This was a fun return to the Buffyverse! I loved catching up with some of the characters. It was a bit too campy for my taste. I didn’t love the explanation for how Frankie was “conceived”. I also felt the menstrual jokes where childish and unnecessary. While some parts of In Every Generation were eyeroll cringey, I did enjoy the mystery of the story line. It’s that mystery that will get me to pick up the second book.
i'm not a buffy stan, and i've never seen any of the tv shows or anything, so i guess take this with a grain of salt. but, i feel like blake wrote this book with the idea that people that have never watched the tv show, like me, are going to read this and like it and actually understand it. but, i honestly didn't understand anything in this book. like, i feel like there is just so much history and kind of grow up the idea from the show and than kind of explain the world and kind of make it happen. and i honestly wish that instead they just used the source material and use the beloved characters, since it would have been more enjoyable for the longtime fans.
with that being said, i feel like this book was messy and just weird, but not in a good way. like, i feel that the book just had so many jumps in time and jumps in povs, which got to be kind of a mess, and i think that it just didn't make sense in the context of this book. but, they did try to kind of show the good vs evil, which also didn't work cause i feel like the lines were kind of blurry.
one thing that i did really hate was the biphobia and the homophobia in this book. like, i did like that they did give us this plot with having the character have both boyfriends and girlfriends, which i think was super cool and just i didn't like in this context. like, i feel like this whole love triangle with having her get with a boy and than a girl and have this messy ass love triangle, just to be like "i'm confused, i'm not actually bi!" which just pissed me off as someone that is bi.
