This book had such an awesome concept and writing. The delivery was spot-on, and this book warmed my heart. Zepka’s examination of identity was so thorough and profound, and it paired so beautifully with the romance. I would recommend this.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of the Temperature of Me and You in exchange for an honest review!
The story follows Dylan, a 16 year old teen who has a close group of friends, who works at Dairy Queen and is looking for his first boyfriend. In walks Jordan, a boy who Dylan immediately thinks is cute. The two start to spend time together, when Dylan spikes a fever and starts coughing flames. After enough pestering, Jordan finally tells Dylan all about his past and who is after him.
I really wish I had liked this book but I struggled to get through it. It was very slow paced and I think this was one of the main reasons I didn’t give this a high rating. I found the main character, Dylan, to be a bit boring and I didn’t find that him and Jordan had any real chemistry.
I wish I had something positive to say about the book. I think initially the concept seemed cool, but it fell flat.
This book was written magically. I was rooting for the characters from beginning to end as the plot heated up! It warmed my heart and made me smile I could not put this book down.
The Temperature of Me and You" by Brian Zepka is a poignant and introspective exploration of love, loss, and the complexities of human relationships. Through a series of interconnected stories, Zepka delves into the lives of his characters with empathy and insight, crafting a narrative that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. His prose is lyrical and evocative, drawing readers into the emotional landscapes of his characters. "The Temperature of Me and You" is a moving and beautifully written collection that lingers in the mind long after it's been read.
Thank you so much for the ARC Netgalley . I'm trying to review all my old books, and this one I liked. It was fun and easy to read, definitely an enjoyable read for anyone who loves YA with a touch of fantasy. Personally, I usually don't read YA anymore so it's not a book I would read now, but I liked it at the time.
I was excited about this book and I ended up not being a big fan of it. I liked the characters and the plot but the pacing dragged for me.
This one was unbalanced for me. The main character seemed lovable at first, but became increasingly unhinged as the book continued. Maybe that was the point, but it was a miss for me. I liked the twist at the end and wonder what it's going to be like for those two to keep their condition under wraps. Overall, a fine book with a decent romance, but I felt like it wasn't as fleshed out as it needed to be to fully embrace the science fiction element and have it seem like a grounded book.
This tale is quite entertaining. Take a Dairy Queen, the first crush between two young boys, a mix of love, and something that turns into a Gay Romance. The perfect read for any teen or adult. Fun dialogue and plot. Heart-shattering at points. And heart-warming. The perfect tale for a young man finding his identity, or already knows that he likes boys. Lessons in romance to be learned from page to page. A positive and romantic read.
I unfortunately didn't love this book at all. I'm here for a Sci Fi Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda bend, which is what the novel was comped as, but this fell so flat for me I can't help but to feel disappointed. The romance (if it can be called that) moved WAY too fast for me. I get that the MC is 16-17, but still. It was too much. There wasn't a good enough explanation for the sci-fi parts and it felt unfinished. And I can't forget to mention how unrealistic the portrayal of teenagers is in this book because... as a teacher- I hear the way they talk to one another, and this isn't it. "Oh my Goodness! Are you okay?" "Good Heavens! I can't believe he spoke to you in such a manner!" are not how teenagers speak in 2023. Also some circumstances in the book are questionable, even for a sci-fi novel. Will still recommend to students who seek LGBTQ rep, but will absolutely not be buying one for my library.
I received this egalley as part of the ALAN conference and it is kept on a kindle in my classroom. My rating is based on the ratings provided by my students who have read the book and I look forward to when I get the chance to do so.
A lovely read that brings in elements of supernatural to a very realistic world. It stands up well to other titles in the same genre. I would recommend it to students who have enjoyed other stories about magic/magical realism in YA fiction.
I enjoyed this book. The story was cute and the characters were engaging. I like how much thought went into the plot but I felt it was wrapped up rather quickly at the end
Excited to hear that this is going to be adapted by Disney! The characters were fun, likeable (although the MC did come across as quite whiny at times, which could be annoying) and I enjoyed the writing flow. Near the end, it did feel a little rushed and I was underwhelmed with the conclusion.
I’ve heard so much about this book. I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it! I really enjoyed the story, and the characters felt so real.
The Temperature of Me and You by @brianzepka is a young adult fiction tale about two teenagers who fall in love. You've heard that trope before, right. But WAIT! There's a twist. Dylan Highmark is 16 years old and is the only gay guy in his high school. He spends his time outside of school working part-time at Dairy Queen and the rest of the time he's hanging out with his best friends, Kirsten and
Perry. They're all worried about finishing high school and what comes next, but the one thing Dylan wasn't ready for was Jordan Ator. A story common to many first loves...when Jordan and Dylan meet, they experience an explosion! In this case, it's a real explosion. Jordan was the sole survivor of an electric vehicle malfunction
and subsequent crash that killed both his parents.
Although Jordan survived the crash, he was left
permanently changed due to the hydrogen battery
explosion. Little does Jordan know he can transfer this affliction to those he gets too close to. Unfortunately Dylan finds that out the hard way. You'll have to read this book to find out exactly how these two voung gay men survive their explosive first love. This book has a beautiful cover, well-rounded characters, and a really fun premise. However, the main character makes every wrong decision, is a little too angsty, and overall reading this was giving me anxiety. I think a lot of people could really enjoy it, but it wasn't for me.
Realistic storyline of what it's like to be queer, imo. Wasn't fond of Kirsten due to her "not friendship" with Savannah, but I do appreciate Savannah's redemption, even though it doesn't begin to make up for her initial cruelty, but again, they're kids and kids do dumb things like that, even the Kirsten character. Would read again and rec to others, for sure.
I really enjoyed the premise of The Temperature of Me and You and loved Zepka's writing style but the store just wasn't engaging enough for me.
There was a bit of a slow build that didn't keep me invested enough in the story. I hear that it picks up speed about halfway through but I'm not sure that it truly pulled me in enough to keep interested to that point.
loveee, this was so cute and interesting.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with an e-arc of this novel!
It took about halfway for the book to start kicking it in gear for me. And when it did, it was loads of fun.
I think the characters could’ve been pushed more and the romance a little less forced, but all in all a fun story.
Very excited to see the TV adaptation of this! I think that medium will really do it justice.
