Due to some health issues, I was unable to get this book read and reviewed in a timely manner. I apologize.
Another wonderful, gothic style story by Abigail Wilson! I enjoyed the setting and the characters. There is an air of mystery that clings to the story as the truth struggles to come out. I highly recommend picking this one up!
I really enjoyed the many twists and turns this book described. It really kept you on your toes guessing, quite different than other mysteries I’ve read in the past!
Due to a personal difference in beliefs (WITH THE PUBLISHER) I will not be reviewing this book outside of Netgalley nor do I plan to support Thomas Nelson in the future due to their decisions of late and the lack of fiction with good Biblical values.
This does not mean I do or do not like the book, it just means I will not be reviewing books for this publisher anymore as I do not care to support them when I do not agree with the way they have left their former standards.
Twilight at Moorington Cross by Abigail Williams grabbed my attention from the first page.
After living at a mesmeric hospital and growing close to the doctor, Amelia was informed that she would inherit the entirety of the hospital—if she married one of the men stipulated in the will. The next morning, the doctor died in mysterious circumstances, and Amelia must grapple with her grief, her suitors, and a clues to a possible murder.
I have enjoyed all of Abigail Williams’ books this far, and this one is no exception. I love the mystery and intrigue, and the regency period is one of my favorite settings. The characters were entertaining and well-developed, though, perhaps, a little extreme. The forbidden romance kept me guessing as to how the characters would come together in the end.
I tried to unravel the mystery, but I couldn’t guess all of it. It reminded me of Agatha Christie’s novels.
I would rate the book around PG to PG-13 for cleanness. There were no intimate scenes beyond kissing, but it was clear that characters other than the main ones had been immoral “off screen.” The murder happened off screen as well, and the body was not described in much detail. The focus of the novel was the romance and the mystery, not the gore.
I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it to fans of Agatha Christie and Julie Klassen.
I received a complementary copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for sharing them.
This was an enjoyable mystery!
Every time I thought I had the bad guy figured out another person would do something to change my mind. It kept me guessing till the end.
I enjoyed hearing about mesmerism- I didn’t know that was a thing back then.
Oh this book had many great twists and turns in it! I knew from reading this author's previous works that I was in for a good mystery and that there would be unexpected moments throughout the book. And she didn't disappoint.
Amelia is trying to understand her sleeping spells and has tried to receive treatment for it but unfortunately she's no closer to getting answers than when she was a little girl. She's had a lot of trauma in her life since she was little and just wishes for freedom in her choices. Boy is she in for a big surprise!!! Mr. Cluett who has become like a father figure to her has a plan to keep her safe and cared for, for years. Maybe. Because it doesn't keep him safe. In fact, he ends up dead.
Thus begins a rather interesting cat and mouse game as well as Amelia forced to pick to marry between two men of Mr. Cluett's choosing within 30 days of his death. Yikes! No pressure at all.
Of course the little clues start coming in while everything is unfolding and as the reader we have to try to discern which are true and which are just bread crumbs trying to lead us off the scent.
Then we also get to see a character from one of her previous books. Ewan Hawkins, who is Mr. Cluett's solicitor and somewhat now Amelia's guardian.
A murderer walking around at large, patients suffering from lack of treatments, a nurse who is hiding secrets, two gentlemen suitors who are something else, a handsome solicitor whom Amelia is trying to guard her heart from but can't seem to avoid him, more hidden secrets, and lots of twists and turns.
I was thinking I had it all figured out and bam, something else would happen and I'd be like, "No way! I did not see that coming!!!" Hahaha! It kept me turning the pages very quickly and guessing at every turn.
I'm looking forward to what else this author has in store for us readers! She's got a fan in me!!!
Content: Clean. This does deal with suspense and murder but is written very well and not overly graphic. I'd let my teens read it.
I received a copy from the publisher, Thomas Nelson--Fiction, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Happy Reading!!!
A delightfully creepy story in which the heroine quickly learns there's no one to trust. No one to confide in, because the only people around her can't be trusted for various reasons. She has less than a month to decide between two men courting her, to solve a sudden death, and to decide if she will take or refuse an inheritance.
I loved the atmospheric feel of the story and the many secrets to uncover, from motivations to secret rooms and passages. And why'd Mr Cluett ask her to court such unsuitable men? What secrets did he have?
Outstanding story and definitely a keeper for my shelf.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.
This started out a little slow for me, but I ended up loving this plot. I had to go back a few times to double check that some of the facts were sitting correctly in my brain. Mainly, her illness. Was anyone else not clear at first what she was being treated with all these years?
Overall, the characters were great, despite the slower ending.
I'm not normally a fan of the slow burn, but this one just felt different. I am a sucker for historical romance, so this book was comforting. Either way, the dialogue was on par and it was beautifully written.
A suspenseful read with interesting characters, intriguing atmosphere, a touch of romance, and a page-turning murder mystery set in one of my favorite eras, Regency England. The story has lots of cool twists and turns and some unique aspects including a heroine with a sleeping disorder and a setting at a Mesmeric Hospital, a spooky place with secrets of its own. Recommended!
Well I really enjoyed this one. This was a good suspanse read.
Thank you so much Netgally for this amazing book.
A gothic mystery set in the regency period, what could be better? The mystery kept me guessing.
Amelia and Ewan are such a sweet pair to root for. I liked that they both had challenges they had to live with, but it didn't stop either one from trying to lead as normal of a life as they could.
Twilight at Moorington Cross by Abigail Wilson is a stand-alone Regency Gothic novel. Faced with the threat of losing her beloved home, Amelia Pembroke is forced to marry one of two suitors to carry out the directives of a will. However, her heart is attracted to another who just happens to be the solicitor tasked with executing the will. Wilson has done it again blending witty dialogue, romance, and a mystery in Regency England.
If you enjoy Regency romance, then by all means give this a read. Author Abigail Wilson writes a delightful story of not only clean romance, but mystery and intrigue.
Well developed characters, both good and not so good, are placed in a crumbling manor. Definitely gothic overtones in its spookiness. What else could a reader want?!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Twilight at Moorington Cross is a wonderful Christian romance set in 1918 in England with a good dash of a mystery. I really enjoyed the story and the relationship between Amelia and Mr. Hawkins as they spent time together solving the murder. I loved visualizing the castle with its wings and secret passages. This is the first novel I’ve read by Abigail Wilson, but it won’t be my last!
I have loved all of the books by Abigail Wilson that I have read and this one did not disappoint. I loved the mystery and romance. I loved that there were mistaken identities and hidden passageways. I thought this was a great mystery and it took me a while until I knew who did it and why. I thought it was well written and one I would read again.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Twilight at Morrington Cross was a pleasant surprise from NetGalley – I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and all opinions expressed within it are my own. I really enjoyed reading this book and would comfortably give it four out of five stars.
Amelia Pembroke, a two-year resident at Cluett’s Mesmeric Hospital, suddenly finds herself named in Dr. Cluett’s will as the heiress to the Morrington Cross estate – provided she marries one of two people of Mr. Cluett’s choosing. This sudden change in fortune doesn’t make any sense to Amelia, and even less to the two men he’s chosen for her. Dr. Cluett’s solicitor, Mr. Ewan Hawkins, assures them all that the will is watertight at the formal meeting to announce the changes. However, upon meeting the delightful Amelia and the less-than-ideal suitors, even Mr. Hawkins can’t figure out the reason behind the stipulation.
Unfortunately for everyone, the terms of the will come into effect sooner than anticipated, as Dr. Cluett is found dead in his bath the night of the meeting. Everyone except the lazy constable feels that Cluett’s death wasn’t an accident, and Amelia enlists Mr. Hawkins’ help in finding the truth. As they investigate together, an attraction between them grows, even though they know they must resist it so that Amelia can inherit the estate. Was Dr. Cluett’s death truly an accident? Can Amelia and Hawkins find the solution, and can they resist their connection so that Amelia might inherit?
I really enjoyed this novel. I think it helps that I’d just read two lackluster romances before this, but I’m sure that most of the credit goes to Wilson rather than the inadequacy of my previous reads. You all know that I’m into historical mystery and I’ve lately discovered that I’m a fan of historical romances, so this combination was just irresistible. I found the writing, plot, romance, and mystery to be very well done. Wilson has great use of language; her style is descriptive while keeping the story on point.
The plot overall was excellent, I really like the pairing of mystery and romance, and even though this was a standalone book, the romance had a sizable challenge to overcome, which gave it a little bit of a slow burn. A lot of the more romantic mystery series I’ve read have a slow-burn romance amidst the cases, which sometimes go on for quite some time. I find it admirable that Wilson managed to make a believable slower-burn romance within a single book, in addition to a mystery.
I really liked the willpower of both Amelia and Hawkins to resist their attraction to one another in order for Amelia to choose a suitor and inherit Morrington Hall. She wants to take care of her fellow residents and help out her spouse with her inheritance, and Hawkins wants to be able to give her the ability to do that. It doesn’t help that Amelia’s suitors both seem to be hiding something, and have personalities that are far less agreeable than Hawkins’. Their struggle to resist each other is real throughout the book, especially since Hawkins is the only person Amelia can really trust to not be the killer. I deeply enjoyed the mystery in this novel as well; it had a lot of facets, which made it interesting, and it was impossible to identify the culprit until the end.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to romance and mystery lovers alike. I really enjoyed reading it, learning about Amelia and Hawkins, and watching them solve a mystery together. They worked well as a team, which could only bode well for a future for them together – if they decide to have one!
Wonderfully romantic with suspense mixed in…..marvelous.
Many thanks to Thomas Nelson Fiction and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
What an excellent read. When a book has me wanting to read the last page to see what happens, I know I am onto a good read. I found this hard to put down. The characters were wonderfully written with so many characters you could imagine what they were like. The setting was perfect for such a mystery, creaks, groans, and mysterious strangers in the dark. The romance added just a lovely touch. There were so many twists and turns you just don’t see coming. I loved this story and look forward to reading more by this author. I received this as an ARC and freely give my review.
I love a well written Gothic romance and Twilight at Moorington Cross fits that description. It has all the expected elements. A creepy house with unexplored areas that are probably hiding some sinister secret. Characters that may or may not be who they appear to be. And of course a heroine that finds herself in a perilous situation.
The whole story was captivating but the ending was definitely the icing on the cake. I highly recommend this one!
