I enjoyed this cosy about a bookshop with magical qualities where the shop chooses the books you would most like to read. It also defends its owners from danger with disappearing staircases and flying books. Just wonderful!
The current career of this magical shop is getting married to the local Chief of police but a murder gets in the way of their prospective honeymoon. It is an interesting mystery and a great story with very engaging characters.
All good fun with a nice little twist at the end to make you read the next book.
Cute and sweet! I love the world Amanda Flower has created, and I loved being back with this characters!
A magical bookshop with a tree growing in it, a cat, a crow and a wedding. What more could you want in a book? A murder of course. Each book in this series keeps getting better. Not only are the stories interesting but the characters grow and developed from book to book.
This latest installment in the Magical Bookshop series was by far my favorite. I love how the author consistently creates interesting plots while also providing some character development in each book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free e-copy.
Violet Waverly is back for another adventure. This adventure is supposed to be martial bliss with Chief David Rainwater. However, when Violet uncovers a dead body on her wedding day, clearly all is not going to go as planned. Together with Chief Rainwater, they must solve the mystery of the dead body, and figure out what it has to do with David Henry Thoreau.
The Magical Bookshop Mysteries are one of my absolute favourite cozy mystery series. They are mysterious, magical and unputdownable! The latest instalment is no exception, as I devoured this one in less than a day!
While I always love trying to solve the mystery before the amateur sleuth [and police of course!], this series adds the element of learning about amazing authors in history. This one centres around David Henry Thoreau, who I knew very little about. I turned the last page, knowing I had to read Walden next! Given my love of modern fiction, this is no easy task to make me want to read older books!
I loved the mystery, and I'm sad to say I didn't solve it before Violet and Chief Rainwater. The final denouement certainly blew me away!
Crimes and Covers is an absolute must-read. If you love books about books, you have to read this series. I strongly recommending starting with the first one, because you are going to want to read them all!
ARC received via Netgalley for an honest review
This is my first Amanda Flower read, so first read in the Magical Bookshop series, but this did not affect my reading or enjoyment of Crimes and Covers.
I love a cozy mystery, and I enjoyed the little paranormally side of things here.
There must be something in the waters at the moment with writers, as I have read a few books with bookshop owners and policemen and cozies lately.
I did miss a few little things as I have not read the previous 4 books. but that wasn't a problem and I caught myself up pretty quickly
I just need to find me a bookshop that will magically tell me what book I need to read next!
I will go back and read the previous books in the series, and I hope we get more in the future.
The plot of the book was such a great page turner. The plot of the book was very well written. I truly cannot wait to read another wonderful book from this author. This was a truly great book.
I had had this series on my radar for a while, and I saw this one and decided to try it even if it’s the fifth one in the series. It didn’t take long for me to get immersed in this interesting world. I think that I would probably have understood a little bit of the subtleties, but I don’t feel I missed too much. I thought David and Violet were a really cute couple, and I really enjoyed Daisy. I figured out the villain pretty much right away, but again, that wasn’t a deal breaker. This is an interesting, well-written, and cute book, and I’m looking forward to reading more. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Aww, this series makes me happy. "Crimes and Covers" is book #5 and is a special one with a festive vibe of Christmas and a winter wedding.
Located minutes away from Niagara Falls, Cascade Springs is a small village with a natural spring believed to have healing powers. Violet Waverly is a co-owner of Charming Books with Grandma (and Mayor) Daisy. The bookshop was built by a Waverly woman in the early 1800s with now a two-century-old birch tree in the center. The water from the spring gives this tree mythical essences. The tree can move books to where ever it wants. It helps Violet solve crimes with passages from different books. The tree can choose your next TBR without you knowing!
An American classic novel ties into each installment. I feel a little smarter reading this cozy. In "Crimes and Covers", a woman comes into the bookshop wanting to sell the first edition "Walden". After Violet refused to purchase it without having it authenticated, the woman was mad and left. Meanwhile, another woman claims to be a direct descendant of the author and owner of the said book.
I adore the characters, Violet and her new husband Chief David Rainwater (a Seneca nation member) are cute and there are friendly supporting characters. But my favorites are two shop animals, Faulkner the crow and Emerson the cat. Violet is caught "arguing" with both but never wins. The mystery was good and I had two individuals in mind to be the killer. I flip flop back and forth but ultimately didn't get it right. I like how the mystery ties to Henry David Thoreau's "Walden", which I have not read, but sounds very interesting.
Thank you Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley for an ARC.
I am used to typos and errors in ARCS, but this file was so bad, I gave up after three pages. Words were regularly missing letters, making it frustrating to try to read. I'll get the book from my library after it is published, but I refuse to waste my time and efforts on something that isn't readable.
I was excited to see that another book in the Magical Bookshop Mystery Series was coming out. I have enjoyed every book in this series.
In Crimes and Covers Violet and Chief Rainwater are getting married but things go awry due to an unexpected death interrupting the wedding. As usual with a Magical Bookshop Mystery, Walden is a part of the story. A few days before the wedding a mysterious woman came in to Charming Books trying to sell Violet a very rare first edition of the book. Now, Violet's second time seeing this woman is of her dead at her wedding with the words "They Stole My Book" handwritten on the palm of her hand.
This book is a cozy mystery like the rest of the series. I did like how there were a number of mysteries here: who was this woman, why was she killed, was that really a first edition of Walden and how did she get it? I found the way these questions unfolded really kept me reading. And, as always, Violet and Daisy are just a joy to read so Crimes and Covers has that going for it as well!
Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. As an avid reader a magical bookshop just pulled me into the story immediately, Can you imagine a bookstore where the books choose you? Flying books, a crow named Faulkner and a cat named Emerson with Violet Waverly as the owner of the magical bookshop named Charming Books sets the stage for this story. You will be transported into this world and engrossed in the book from the beginning. Violet is preparing for her wedding to the chief of police, David Rainwater, when she receives a visit from a mysterious woman who claims to have a rare book to sell. Once Violet sees the book title, she know the true value of the book is much more than the mysterious seller wants to sell it. This low price causes Violet to question the book's authenticity, She leaves in a huff and not long after the mystery begins. This is a true magical mystery with great characters. I fell in love with Emerson (the shop cat). He almost has a sixth sense about people. What do you expect from a shop cat from a magical bookshop?! It was a good clean mystery and easy read.
Crimes and Covers is the fifth installment of the Magical Bookshop Mystery series. You could probably read this as a standalone but I'd still recommend starting at the beginning just to have a better appreciation and love for the characters. I've really enjoyed this series, so I was excited to solve another mystery alongside Violet, Grandma Daisy, Faulkner, and Emerson.
Charming Books is a book lover's dream. I could imagine spending hour upon hour at the store, never wanting to leave. As in the previous books, the store played an integral role in solving the mystery. The shop aids Violet in solving the crime by highlighting clues from a specific author's works. This time, Henry David Thoreau was the spotlighted author.
There were times that the dialogue felt a little awkward and stilted. And there was quite a bit of repetition of information that had just been given, just said in a different way, which got a little annoying after a while, but all in all, I enjoyed this trip back to the charming town of Cascade Springs.
I received an advanced copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
Now that is some bookshop! I like the mystical powers. The crow and cat are pretty awesome too. Maggie and Rainwater are good characters. But the main mystery involves a collector first edition book and dead bodies. The end has a twist I didn't see coming. There are side stories like a wedding and a town hall that needs repair, among others. I thought the story was entertaining.
This latest installment in my favorite Amanda Flower series (Magical Bookshop) is set at Christmastime as Violet and David prepare to (finally!) get married. When a woman appears at Charming Books with a first edition of Walden that she wants Violet to purchase from her, and another claims to be a previously unknown direct descendent of Henry David Thoreau, Violet's got her hands full when one of the two is found drowned at her wedding reception!!! Crimes and Covers is a wonderfully warm and cozy mystery, a quick read, and very enjoyable! A+++
It's a week before Christmas and time for the wedding of
Charming Books caretaker Violet Waverly and police chief David Rainwater.
After the perfect wedding, a horse drawn carriage is waiting to take Violet and David to their reception. On the way David sees a woman's dead body floating by on the frigid Niagara River. Violet quickly recognizes the woman and the mystery begins.
This is a great story that's more complex than earlier books in this series. Violet's not trying to prove a friend innocent this time. She's trying to prove that the death wasn't an accident and find the person responsible.
Crimes and Covers is the newest installment of the Magical Bookshop series, which I adore! Set in the Niagara Falls region of New York state the series follows Violet Waverly who owns an enchanted bookshop that always knows what you want to read. This book centers around the wedding of Violet and Police Chief David Rainwater and a very special edition of Walden. A woman who is trying to sell the rare book is found dead on their wedding day and the two of them work to solve what happen to her and find the missing book.
Violet has help from the shop's magical essence, Emerson the cat and Faulkner the crown who live in the shop with her and newly moved in David.
I found myself not loving this installment as much as others in the series, it could be that I guessed the culprit early on or that I was more invested in the marriage and just wanted the two love birds to get their honeymoon and have more interactions together. Still, it was very enjoyable and I loved the surprise at the end!

I am reviewing a copy of Crimes and Covers through Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley:
In the Western New York village of Cascade Springs, as is the long-awaited wedding of Charming Books proprietor Violet Waverly and police chief David Rainwater. Grandma Daisy and Violet's best friend, Sadie, go all out to make the nuptials the event of the season whether Violet likes it or not. But the reception becomes memorable for all the wrong reasons when a woman's dead body floats by on the frigid Niagara River.
It takes Violet by surprise when she recognizes the deceased as a mysterious woman who visited Charming Books two days before the wedding, toting a rare first edition of Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Well aware that a mint condition copy could be worth more than $14,000, Violet told the woman she would have to have the book appraised before she could consider buying it. Most displeased, the woman tucked the precious tome under her arm and stormed out of the shop. Now she's dead, and an enigmatic message scrawled in pen upon her palm reads, "They stole my book."
The case is a confusing one But fortunately, Violet can draw on the resources of her bookshop's magical consciousness, which communicates clues to Violet via quotes from Walden. With Emerson the tuxedo cat and Faulkner the crow at her side, Violet sets out to recover the priceless book by solving a murder most transcendental.
I give Crimes and Covers five out of five stars!
Happy Reading!
A magical bookshop is exactly where I would want to live if I had the choice! I'd even take the persnickety crow and cute cat full of personality! In fact, the personalities that the author has created for each character, including the animals, is what will keep you coming back book after book! In this book Violet and David are finally getting married, but their big day is marred by the death of a mysterious woman. A wonderful plot to keep you delightfully entertained and guessing to the end wrapped around warm characters and a fabulous setting! I can't wait to see what is next for this fabulous bunch of characters. This book series is definitely on my list of all-time favorites, I'll bet it will be on yours as well if you start with the first book and read the entire series too!
Violet Waverly and Police Chief David Rainwater must put their long awaited honeymoon on hold when Roma, who visited Violet's bookstore carrying an alleged signed first edition by Henry David Thoreau, is founded murdered! Violet was skeptical about the book but she didn't expect this- nor did she expect that a woman named Imogene Thoreau would turn up claiming that the book is hers. Except it's missing. Then another bookseller is murdered. Geez. Trust that Violet, with David's nod, will figure it all out thanks to- wait for it- the mystical spirit in her shop as well as Emerson the cat and Faulkner the crown who live in the shop (along with a tree that grows in the middle of it). I admit to liking this series not only for the characters (love those animals) but also for the fact that each installment is centered around a literary figure. Yes, there's a paranormal thing but it's not too out there and it's never too serious. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. While it's a terrific addition to the series, it also will be a very good read as a standalone.
