Quick note: this was not compatible with Kindle, it looked like there were typos and letters missing everywhere, but worked fine with the Netgalley app.
One of the better cozy mysteries I've picked up this year!
I haven't read the previous books but this one did a good job of recounting/re-establishing what makes our amateur sleuth special without giving anyway spoilers for previous books/mysteries. Makes me want to pick up the previous books.
It was easy to get absorbed into it, good cast of characters, didn't feel highfalutin with WALDEN everywhere, maybe some unanswered questions at the end but satisfying others.
*I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
This is my first book from Amanda Flower and for me the first book to read in this series "Magical Bookshop". But actually this is book number 5. I found that I could easily read this book as a stand alone because you quickly step in with things that happened. I felt in no way I was missing something because I have not yet read the other books.
I absolutely loved this book. The mystery itself, the crime, the characters and the fact I had no idea who did it until it was revealed. I also loved the style of writing and after about three of four chapters I already knew I wanted to read the other books in this series. It is really, really good! I haven't read many paranormal cozies, but this is high up my "Loving" list. I would certainly recommend this one!
Awwww, David Rainwater and Violet finally get married! Of course on their wedding day someone dies! The question is was it murder or was it an accident?
A woman tries to sell violet a rare book by Thoreau, but Violet doesn't deal in rare books. When the woman ends up dead and the book disappears Violet and Rainwater are on the case.
Once again I think the animals and the bookshop steal the show! Faulkner the talking crow cracks me up and Emmerson the cat/escape artist is too cute for words! The magical shop once again tries to guide Violet in solving the case. It always interests me what passages the shop will share with Violet. Hurray for cozy mysteries and hurray for The Magical Bookshop Mysteries continuing!
Crimes & Covers by Amanda Flower is the fifth book in the Magical Bookshop cozy series and was a very satisfying read from first page to last.
Ms. Flower has a descriptive writing style that, throughout the series, has allowed the town of Cascade Springs and all of the characters to be organically developed into what feels like a "real" community. This time Violet's world is filled with her wedding to David Rainwater, an odd woman who wants to sell a rare first edition book, accidents, murder, magic and plenty of twists that kept me turning the pages. An entertaining afternoon read.
Three days prior to Violet's wedding to Chief of Police David Rainwater, a woman enters Charming Books with a signed first edition copy of Thoreau's Walden for sale. Unfortunately, the woman will not allow Violet to determine the authenticity of the book and leaves.
When Violet and Rainwater are heading to their wedding reception, the woman is discovered floating in the river. The honeymoon must be delayed while an investigation is underway.
Who was the mysterious woman? Where is the book and where did it come from? As information is uncovered, more questions arise.
Enjoyed catching up with Violet, family and friends in Cascade Springs.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC.
Finally married, but the honeymoon will have to wait. Violet and Rainwater's honeymoon is on hold until the mystery of a first edition of Walden Pond is found.
Another Amanda Flower hit. A satisfying cozy that really feels cozy!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for a digital copy of this ARC. All opinions are my own. This review can also be found on my Goodreads page.
As a huge fab of the cozy mystery genre I’m always looking for another series to add to my list. Amanda Flower knocked it out of the park with this Magical Bookshop Mystery.

I love the cat! They added so much character to the story and so much fun.
I really enjoyed this book. I have loved this series and this book does not disappoint. Originally after finishing this book I thought that there could have been more story line with side characters but on second thought it would have slowed down the plot and made the book drag on. I do like that we got to see a little more of Adrien and some of his backstory. Grandma Daisy is also a fun character to read about and so are Faulkner and Emerson. A great read for lovers of books and book-themed stories.
What a wonderful book. I love this series. The plot is so well and keeps you on your toes from page one with all its twists and turns that are meant to draw you in (and they certainly do). The character development is great too.
This Kindle book was sent to me by Netgalley for review…mystery…intrigue…a quick read…try this one…a good read for an afternoon of just relaxing and fun. The protagonist doesn’t give up…cozy mystery
Having read several books by this author I was looking forward to another great adventure. For the most, part this book was pretty good, but I felt not up to the standards of her previous ones. Still an enjoyable series and one I would recommend. I received an e-book from NetGalley in return for an unbiased review.
Being a book lover, what's not to like about a magical bookstore and a murder mystery involving a famous book. This was a fun book to read since it had the right amount of whimsy mixed with a murder investigation that kept me guessing.
The flow of this book made it easy to read and had good character development. I loved Violet's animal sidekicks (a raven and tuxedo cat) since they always seemed to be helpful at the right moments.
I have never read all of Henery David Thoreau's Walden, but thought that the premise surrounding that particular book was a nice choice. The Walden quotes were intertwined into the bookstore's magical clues.
I have read some of the books in Amanda Flower's Amish Candy Shop Mystery series and really enjoyed this one as much if not more! I want to read the other books in this series!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a digital copy of this book for my honest review.
It's Christmas time and Violet Waverley and her fiance David Rainwater are preparing for their wedding.
When a mysterious woman shows up at their bookstore, Violet is curious about her and the book she wants to sell.
The mysterious woman is later found, dead, and Violet knows this was no accident.
I enjoy this series and this book did not disappoint me. I'm always excited to read a book by Amanda Flower, and I'm looking forward to reading more from her.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Another intriguing mystery from Amanda Flower! Set in Cadcade Springs. A picturesque town we've all come to love. Charming Books run by Violet Waverly, a special bookstore. A strange woman comes by and tries to send a rare and valuable book to Violet. But then the woman is found dead and Violet is not convinced like the police that this was an accident. Violet sets out to help David to solve the mystery. Excellent likeable characters, great plot and fun to read! Thanks #netgalley and #Crookedlanebooks for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC
Violet Waverly is the owner of charming books and the caretaker of Charming Books; A very special book shop which is fed via Violet by a magical spring, giving magical essence to the book shop. It’s coming up on Christmas and is also finally Violets wedding day, and a somewhat mysterious woman is found dead. Of course, although the police may think it was an accident, it seems suspicious as The woman had just been recently in Violet‘s book shop trying to send her a very rare and valuable addition of Walden by Henry David Thoreau. What is going on and is there a killer?
Now, Think of the kind of perfect little town you might see inside of snow globe. This book reminds me of that. Everything in the book is very cute and charming. The town and the people who live in it seem designed to be just perfectly charming. A feeling that is ramped up even more by the fact that it’s just before Christmas. For me, this leads to a kind of artificial feeling in the book. It seems like we are “told” rather than being “shown”. The characters that are “good” have their charms amplified while the naughty (I can’t even say bad people in this cozy mystery) are just guilty ya”all (sorry for my own descent into charm).
The main character Violet is fine. In fact, you have to admire that she cares about people and tries to do the right thing. It’s just, there doesn’t seem to be that much to her. Double goes for her new husband. The supporting characters are all sitcom ready, cute and meant to fill a specific role. They are all perfectly fine.
The thing I do wish was a lot better in the book is the murder mystery. The plot was extremely s l o w. The ending wasn’t very surprising, and I didn’t really feel like there were clues left for it throughput the book. It was more manufactured at the end.
Overall, this was an okay book. It is an easy read, although at times felt slow and a little dull. I never had that feeling of excitement where you get hooked and just can’t wait to see what happens. The magic from the springs seems pretty sparse, and Violet doesn’t interact with it in a meaningful way to find the killer. I like the characters of her cat and bird, who I honestly suspect are the brains of the operation.
