If you liked "The Deep" by Alma Katsu then I think this book would be right up your alley. I am a fan of both LGBTQ+ fiction and the Titanic so this was perfect.

A fun read of a historical novel. It is nice to see the genre get more representation. I know people complain about historical accuracies sometimes, but that is the fun of fiction. Getting to create and read about the worlds we wish existed or wished that the world was.

This Sapphic retelling was full of emotion and poise. The relationship might have been forged a little quickly, but we all have that friend that falls fast. Sometimes it works out. The relationship and its quickness works for the kind of story this is. A rushed journey from one country to another where bleak life prospects await on the other side....I'd be looking to fall fast too. Anything to change the outcome. And anyway, that's how the story of the movie Titanic works as well and we all love Rose and Jack.

I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for something historical and fun to read!

A thoughtful queer historical romance reminiscent of Titanic. Good to see queer representation in the historical romance genre.

As a reader who devours all things Titanic, I was so excited to have the opportunity to review The Breath Between Waves! Charlotte Anne Hamilton does a fantastic job bringing a beautiful sapphic romance to the tragedy that was the sinking of the Titanic. The book was filled with tension and love. Fear of being caught mingled with the freedom of being at sea and away from the worlds in which the two main characters felt they had no control over their circumstances. We all know how Titanic ends, but Hamilton kept the fates of Penelope and Ruby muddled until the very end, keeping me on the edge of my seat.

I heard sapphic titanic and I was sold. Besides the slight insta-love (although understandable given the circumstances) I really enjoyed this fast paced romance.

I am OBSESSED with all things Titanic, so when I came across this one, I couldn't wait to read it! Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The story is beautifully chiseled and really pulls the reader to the heart of the story. You fall in love with the characters, you feel a part of a time in history, and you want more instantly when you are done! I will be adding this one to my keeper list!

To begin with, I have never seen the movie Titanic so I'm not sure if this is a somewhat Sapphic retelling of the movie version of real events. Regardless, the initial attraction between Penelope and Ruby is cute if not quick. From afar I could completely understand their subtle joie de vivre. Who could imagine leaving what you know for a new world and potentially new husbands? So while I don't usually connect with instant attraction and forever, in this case, why not.

3.5 stars

The Breath Between Waves 🌊

5/5 ★ (and so so many more)

Thanks first of all to @pridebooktours for sending me an ebook to review, forever grateful for everything that you do💗

So the breath between waves was such an easy 5 star review for me, I love historical fiction, and this extra little story set upon the titanic was fabulous!

Penelope is forced to move to America for her father’s job, leaving her girlfriend behind, who is quickly engaged with another person. To Penelope’s surprise, her roommate Ruby, also likes Women.

Honestly the way that this book messes with your emotions is like nothing I’ve ever read before 🤣 Charlotte Anne Hamilton has such a talent to be able to do that, I thought the character development was excellent, and the book did reflect on the social norms and conventions of the time, which is something I like to see in a historical fiction book as it makes it all the more realistic. Reading about women’s oppression however, is so frustrating and you just want to reach inside the book, shake the characters and tell them that they are perfect as they are💗

This is definitely a book that I would recommend - perfect for fans of historical fiction + sapphic romance 💗

This book never really captured my attention. It wasn’t bad but it was a little too cheesy for my tastes and I just didn’t connect with the characters. Maybe I’m not the right audience for it.

I didn't care for this title. It just didn't capture my interest or drag me into it's world. I was just bored at times and I didn't fall in love with the characters. It just ended up being a really tough read.

The Breath Between Waves by Charlotte Anne Hamilton is a fictional historical romance that is based on real life events. The story in The Breath Between the Waves is set aboard the Titanic ship as it sailed and sank in 1912.

Penelope Fletcher grew up in Scotland and had thought she had found the love of her life in another woman in her homeland. Penelope however is now being forced by her parents to move to America traveliving via the grand Titanic ship. To make matters worse Penelope is forced to share a cabin with a stranger, Ruby Cole.

Being drawn to anything having to do with the Titanic I was immediately drawn to The Breath Between Waves by Charlotte Anne Hamilton especially with that beautiful cover. The story in The Breath Between Waves is not a bad one but I found that it also didn’t seem to be an overly original one. Having read a lot of Titanic recreations I wanted something new to pull me in and it felt a lot like it was simply a LGBT remake of the movie in a lot of parts so this one left me wanting more.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

The Breath Between Waves follows the romance of two young women on the Titanic. I fairly enjoyed this novel and sped through it. The setting was a good fit for the book and created the mood of the story.

Despite this the novel hadn't been as sad as the tragedy was supposed to due to the flat relationship. It was very insta love which is one of my least favorite tropes. The writing style also felt chunky at times and didn't fit the story well.

Overall, I did enjoy this book but I felt it could've been developed on and become much better.

The Breath Between Waves was a lovely historical romance! It was heartfelt and mellow, but also made me laaugh out loud at times too. Obviously this is a sad book, and you go into reading it knowing that. I very much enjoyed reading this.

The Titanic journey lasted for six days from April 10th to 15th, 1912. It was supposed to arrive at New York on the 17th. To make the main characters fall in love within the timeframe is a huge challenge, and unfortunately, the chemistry between them wasn’t enough for me to be fully invested in their story.

Penelope Fletcher doesn’t want to leave Scotland, but she joins her parents onboard Titanic after being heartbroken by her ex-girlfriend. Her roommate, Ruby Cole, is traveling with her sister’s family. As they spend more time together, they realize there might be something brewing between them, but the clock is ticking as they get closer and closer to their destination.

When I picked up this book, I only knew that it was sapphic, set on the Titanic, and that it is a romance. So, even though I knew that the main characters would remain alive and stay together by the time the book ends (as long as there was no false advertising of it being a “romance”), I still found myself on the edge of my seat as the Titanic hit the iceberg. Despite not being very convinced by the relationship between Penelope and Ruby, I did like both characters and got really worried for them when the ship started sinking. Hamilton captured the anxiety of Titanic sinking incredibly well: the panic, the heartbreak after separation, the sense of dread, etc. I love that some characters are casually queer in this book set in 1912, and even though there is a pressure of getting into a cishet marriage (comp het), there were no other homophobic comment or action.

Not only did I care for the main characters, I was also worried for Ruby’s sister Victoria, brother-in-law Frank, kid brother Liam, niece Julia, as well as some of the partygoers in the Third Class. Despite the book spanning only a few days, Hamilton captured the relatability of the characters and made me care about most of their well-beings.

I didn’t understand why Penelope’s parents seemed to become different people from the couple in her memory on the Titanic though. It was relevant to the story but I didn’t feel like it was explained. Also, I had a little trouble understanding the dialogues in the beginning of the book (not because of the Scottish words), but everything smoothed out a few chapters in.

All in all, THE BREATH BETWEEN WAVES was a decent story with likable characters. Make it to the end of the book and you’d be rewarded with the super cute epilogue!

***Special thanks to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review***

This was an interesting subject for a book and was defintly unique, when I heard about a sapphic Titanic book I was super excited. The pacing of the book was definitely off and that inconsistent pacing made me put the book to the side for a bit.

In addition, I wish that the description of the titanic read less like a fact book and was tied into the exposition better.

I really did like the characters and they drew me in, I just wish there had been more of the story devoted to their relationship.

Wasn’t able to finish it( just didn’t seem to have the time) but I liked what I read, sapphic titanic is always a win, and the roommate troop was a plus.

This is a sapphic romance set on the Titanic. I found Penelope and Ruby very likeable and loved getting to know them more. The more I read the more I fell in love with them.

I enjoy historical fiction especially one set at sea what can I say I’m drawn to the sea. The fact it is set on the Titanic you know what is to come and yet can not do anything about it, it is heartbreaking. I felt so much for the characters and felt like I was there experiencing it with them. This book made me feel a range of emotions and will definitely stay with me for a long time.

I would recommend this book if you like historical fiction, sapphic romance or romance with a bit of steam.

I enjoyed this point of view of a Titanic passenger. It was nice to read about the second class passenger type experience and the expectations put on Penelope and Ruby in that era. I enjoyed their journey of becoming friends than lovers and their personal realizations about what they wanted/needed to live their lives. Even though I know people would die, I still cried anyway. I am already looking forward to reading more from this author!

A lovely romantic story about two women who meet on the Titanic just before its doomed voyage, and quickly fall in love. I really enjoyed the characters and how they were able to be quite different while also being compatible. I felt a little let down by the details of the atmosphere: I pieced together most of the images of what things looked like by simply imaging the movie Titanic. The pacing also didn't quite hit right for me: it felt fine if a little slow at the start, but so much happened at the end of the book all at once that it ended up being a little cramped. With both of those things noted, I thoroughly enjoyed this book in plot, premise, and character and would gladly recommend it to many people.

I enjoyed this historical Titanic storyline. It does have a fanfic flair, but really it has to since it's based off of a true story. I like the lesbian retelling and the great descriptions that made me feel like I was watching a movie in my head. I look forward to more from this author, especially if she writes more historical fiction. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
