The Supernatural Society follows three students that are not the most popular at school but find comfort and friendship in their shared displacement. Linus and Ivy are adopted and Will has just been uprooted from New York due to his parents' divorce. However, upon entering this new town, he begins to see things that no one else can see... accept Ivy. This is how their relationship begins, bonding over the existence of the supernatural. When Will's dog, the only thing he has left from his previous life goes missing along with several other pets in the town, the story starts to get really interesting. I enjoyed this book. Animal lovers will be drawn to this heart felt story of keeping animals safe and close to your heart. There was a spooky element along with the idea of family and friendship prevailing due to trust and love. Great story.
Middle school is full of enough problems. Add a messy divorce and being moved from New York City to East Emerson in the middle of nowhere and you have a pretty miserable young man. At least he has Fitz, his canine best friend. As they enter East Emerson, Will keeps catching glimpses of horrifying monsters that no one else can see. Then neighborhood pets begin to disappear. When Fitz doesn't come when called, and is indeed missing, Will must join forces with some other outcasts and delve into the supernatural history of East Emerson. Will, Ivy and Linus come up against magic against magic and monsters. What can three sixth graders do? The answer is a scary, exciting, and often hysterical. This is a great new series for middle school readers. I can't wait to order copies for my library. Many thanks to Net Galley for the chance to read the ARC.
Will and his mom and his dog move away from new York where he has always lived. They move to a town full of monsters, creepy crawlers and things that go bump in the night...BUT apparently no one but Will can see these creatures. Then his dog goes missing, and Will teams up with his neighbors to find him. I would recommend this book only to children who don't scare easily.
What a fun read. At first, Will was a little too whiny for my liking. I know he was going through a tough time, but sheesh! Tone it down buddy. Once the story got going I was invested. I liked the characters and the mystery. It wasn't too long or too short.
Way too aware of itself for me to fall into the story. The writing is very reminiscent of Lemony Snickett which I also find tedious. I'm disappointed I didn't like it more since I do like his other books and have seen him speak a couple of times which I enjoyed. This is just trying too hard.
Will is new in town. Life has not been going the way he wants it to but coming to East Emerson is suppose to be a new start for him and his family. Yet East Emerson is far from normal. In fact Will has noticed a very large population of creatures and beings that normally only exist inside his video games and graphic novels. When he voices concern he realizes that only himself and one other individual in town can see what is really going on. When pets start to disappear around town and Will is given a cryptic prophecy from a glowing fox he gets swept up in the adventure of a lifetime. Can Will and his new found friends save the animals before it is to late?
The Supernatural Society is a interesting set up for a book. It has aspects one finds in books such as the Series of Unfortunate events with the doom speaking narrator, and the quirky mystical aspects you find in the Magical Misfits series. Kids who love the supernatural are really going to enjoy this series. I am so grateful that the author put in ways to decode the messages within the story. Some of them I could figure out on my own but others it was very helpful to have the key for.
Thank you so much to Inkyard Press and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy.
Missing pets, strange beings of all shapes and sizes and a couple of misfits to sort it all out! It was a fun ride (except maybe the clowns). I really enjoyed this middle grade horror book and would recommend it to all who like to be scared (but maybe not really).
There were so many different creatures to learn about and of course to try and figure out who did it! Where did the pets go?
Great book!
Due to divorce, Will and his mother make a move from Brooklyn NY to East Emerson, a small village in Massachusetts. As they drive into the town, Will is devastated about leaving his best friend and the city behind, and the small town just doesn't feel right, especially when he notices that many of the people are monsters, not human. To add to his confusion, his mom can't see what he sees, and she blames his negative attitude for his seeing monsters. Strange observations continue at school, but luckily Ivy, who lives across the street, has also sees the monsters, unlike her scholarly brother, Linus, who can't. The plot has plenty of action as the trio search for Fitz, Will's dog, and the rest of the town's missing pets. Will, Ivy, and Linus each have their own mannerisms and voices, which allows the reader to easily visualize each character. Another “plus” in the plotting of the book are the “Dear Reader” asides and interjections provided by the narrator! Highly recommend.
This middle grade fantasy book started out with a lot of potential, but I have to say that I found the use of a monster as the narrator made the story telling style a bit strange.
Middle grade children who enjoy a scary story will probably find this book fun, but I could not relate the the characters, storyline or storytelling style.
This book was so much fun. I immediately fell in love with the main character, Will. It has a diverse cast of characters. I would recommend this to fans of the supernatural and funny stories.
Will, his mom, and his dog Fitz move to small-town East Emerson. Will is grappling with the divorce of his parents and now, has to adjust to losing his best friend. On top of that, Will cannot believe what he is seeing - monsters! Is he crazy? No one else sees them. Not his mother - she sees this as Will's way of acting out.
But then Fitz goes missing. And so have a lot of other pets in East Emerson. Will joins forces with rebellious Ivy and super-smart, but reluctant Linus to solve the mystery of the missing pets.
What a fun book! I thoroughly enjoyed Will's, Ivy's, and Linus' adventure and growth.
I just reviewed The Supernatural Society by Rex Ogle. #TheSupernaturalSociety #NetGalley
Will Hunter, his dog, Fritz, and his mom have moved to East Emerson (MA) from Brooklyn (NY). Fitting into a small town can be hard, but Will is finding it especially hard since he keeps seeing monsters that others do not see. Monsters such as a glowing fox and a witch's coven. Then he meets Ivy who also sees the monsters. When Fritz joins the town's missing pet collection, Will, Ivy, and Linus, Ivy's brother, hunt for the missing pets and seek to save the town. This title, first in a series, is a nice Halloween treat! Hopefully, the second volume will be as entertaining.
Thanks Netgalley for the chance to read this title.
Will and his mom just moved to a new town and all Will can think is that he wants to go home and see his dad again. Sadly, Dad has moved on and Will starts seeing monsters. At first he tries to convince his mom that they're real, but she just shuts him down. When Will realizes that a girl at school sees the monsters, too, he immediately seeks her out as a friend. Turns out, they're neighbors and she's got a brother (both adopted) at their school too. But, the brother is completely scientific-minded and doesn't believe the monsters are real. When pets from all over town, including Will's dog, begin to go missing, the trio decides to investigate and adventure ensues.
The three main characters are well-drawn and fun, and the parents are realistic enough to middle grade literature. The plot is fun and moves along nicely. The one thing that I really didn't like was the narrator - his asides addressed in second person to the reader just annoyed me. I'm not a fan of that kind of writing. But, the rest was great.
I recommend this book to kids who enjoy a good scary story (or want a story to try and find out if they will like scary stories).

The Supernatural Society was a really fun read; I think many kids will especially enjoy solving the secret messages scattered throughout the book. The story was exciting, and the characters are different enough that everyone will be able to relate to one of them.
