3:5 stars rounded to 4 stars. This is a warm, gentle book that made me laugh out loud as well as pause as the intent of the book became clearer. If weโre going to go out, let us go out together, helping one another with love, compassion, and total disregard for our differences. Beautiful!
My thanks to NetGalley and Forge Books for allowing me to read an ARC of this book which is scheduled to be published on 11/2/21. All opinions in this review are my own and are freely given.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of I Will Not Die Alone.
I made the silly assumption that this was going to be a self help graphic novel about believing in yourself and taking chances and risks.
But, as I got to the end, I realized it was not what I thought it was; there's a dark, apocalyptic surprise I really appreciated.
The art is beautiful, goofy but in a good way, highlighting unique characteristics we all possess as humans except in the stunning diversity of the animal world. Oh, wait, we''re animals, too.
The affirmations are nothing new, we've heard them all before, but in the context of a cataclysmic event, they take on a whole new meaning.
This is like a dark comedy short film; thoughtful, sweet and positive despite how it ends.
And, the last panel is hilarious.
At first, I didn't quite know what to think of this book. It's part affirmations, part comic book, part almost like a to-do list. And in that way it felt kind of jumbled and at times towards the beginning of the book lost its strength. But if you find yourself thinking the same thing while reading this book I encourage you to persist. The first time I read it I didn't realize it was about the end of the world. Which may contribute to why I wasn't feeling like it felt complete. I was missing some context. That being said, I found the ideas to be rather compelling and honest in a way that is not portrayed in many books these days or anywhere else for that matter, and I liked that it was positive in the face of a heavy subject. The drawings were really cute. I felt like there were parts of the book that got overshadowed slightly, but overall it's great, funny, thoughtful, and definitely gets you thinking about what really matters in the world, or, as is suggested, the end of the world. I would call this book very moving and inspiring and such a creative and unexpected way. I kind of want to print it all out and put it on my bathroom mirror because, let's be honest, at the end of the world it's totally coming and I could use these reminders. ๐คฃ
Thank you #netgalley for allowing me the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I am so glad I didn't miss it.
I initially thought this was for children due to the cover. Great artwork with a good premise. The ending was a bit of a shocker though.
Requested this off a whim and maybe should have read what this was about because at first I was like โoh this is cuteโ and then I was like โoh this is sadโ
A cute end of the world story!
I don't even even know where to begin with this review because this was such a spontaneous read totally different from what I usually read.
This is a very short graphic book that the author wrote for people to read in the bathroom but not while pooping or peeing when they are bored but in those situations when they need an escape.
I totally get this because sometimes I need to take a break from everything and be with myself in the bathroom rethinking things. In those moments it is hard to keep a positive mood and it is easier to fall into the mind's trap and start thinking negatively.
I think that the short but meaningful life quotes from this book can help us all move past those moments easier, count our blessings and remember all the reasons why we should enjoy life.
I think the puctures were cute, hilarious and really matched the quotes and the overall tone of the book.
Thanks to netgalley, the author and the publisher for this gifted ARC.
I enjoyed this very much. The illustrations in this are stunning and they took great care in picking the illustrations and the way they wanted them to be perceived. The writing is very simple but it has such a big impact on the reader. This has very big potential and has a lot of messages that will stick with the reader. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
This book contains no humans yet captures what it is to be one. It captures all the high moments, quirks, annoyances, "flaws", and perfections that make us the creatures we are while the whole time acknowledging our mortality. Each page reads like an affirmation and many of these will become those for my day-to-day life. Laughter, tears, and pangs of understanding are to be expected when reading this lovely book. The illustrations are adorable, heartwarming, and hilarious. Pick this book up and sit back and enjoy the ride.
I felt like this wasn't what the blurb describes. I definitely wouldn't call it a graphic novel, more a collection of affirmations, with a rough sequence. I don't think that even the cover represents the insides well so not something I could recommend.
Usually, when reading graphic novels from NetGalley, my expectations are relatively low. But this oneโฆ woah!
This is perfect for daily affirmations or just little constant reminders, the texts were simple but meaningful and relatable and the illustrations so beautiful and funny.
Favorite graphic novel of the year? Yeah, definitely.
thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This was such a nice read. It gives out empowering feelings that just really wants me to keep doing the things I do and that whatever it is, it will lead to something better. It gives off a feel good vibes with what you have and what you are at the moment, and that whatever you do will lead to a something more and bigger than what you expect. You and I are not alone and that wherever we may be, there will always be someone doing the same thing, experiencing the same struggles, and claiming the same victories.
A huge thanks to the publisher for my e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I will not die alone was my first book by the author and it really did a number on me . It is a graphic novel wonderfully illustrated and answering the question we all have about dying alone.
I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it
Not what I thought it would be at all, be a really cute book, with amazing illustrations and a really quick read.

This is so funny and not at all what I was expecting. This is absolutely the best looking at when sitting on the toilet, as this is more looking than reading. Funny quotes going to the end of times. This should definitely be a rip-off calendar or something. Good quotes to live by and whatโs more funny than a giraffe with pants?

I absolutely loved this graphic novel. I Will Not Die Alone is equal parts quirky, dark and funny. The illustrations by Joe Bennett are beautiful and I love that the author and illustrator chose animals to portray human characteristics and qualities (the mole and the baboon are my favourites). The self-affirmations paired with the hilarious illustrations are perfect to brighten up your day. And with everything that has happened in the last couple of years, we all need something to laugh at and spread some positivity even in dark times. Simple, charming and yet powerful, I Will Not Die Alone contains powerful messages for the reader.
Top 5 reasons to read โI will not die aloneโ written by Debra White, illustrated by Joe Bennett. 1. You like books that make you smile. 2. You like books that make you say โmmmm.โ 3. Linda!! 4. Animals in regular clothes. 5. While an incredible book, you realize this would make a fantastic musical.
I donโt know what to say about this book because it only took me 5 minutes to read. I pictured this being a more non-fiction book but I was quite surprised. I wasnโt understanding all the concepts entirely but the imaginary was well portrayed.
This was a weird and wonderful collection. The panels in the first half of this book could easily be turned into motivational posters and they would be great. The second half gets darker but the last panel "Linda" had me laughing out loud, it was awesome!!
A great addition to your home library.
Thank you so much to Macmillan-Tor/Forge and NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC; it is greatly appreciated.
This is not a book/graphic novel in the traditional sense. Instead it is a picture book of affirmations, but with a twist. The art is humorous and colorful, while the text ranges from silly to serious. I definitely recommend really paying attention with how the text connects to the art. This is one where I can see myself going through it a few more times to really understand the meaning behind everything.
Overall it's an enjoyable coffee table book that only takes a few minutes to read, but you can definitely put some time and thought into it if you choose.
This was a really fast read that essentially consisted of affirmations. The dark twist was fun enough, and I appreciated the page color change as we reached the climax of the book (it invoked a definite feeling of unease)
