Holy shit. I did not expect to feel so many feels with this. Now I'm the weirdo librarian, alone in the teen room, crying, because I can't keep it together. Thanks. But for reals, this was kind of exactly what I needed right now <3
"I Will Not Die Alone” starts out as adorable book of affirmations and determined declarations paired with cute illustrations of anthropomorphic animals in various situations. For example: "Giving up is not an option today," paired with a turtle on its back. A beaver in platform shoes, with the saying, “I will reach new heights.” Each of these could easily be a meme, a poster, or a delightful greeting card. But the book takes a sharp turn toward something entirely different at about the halfway mark, and becomes something both more disturbing and more profound. I won’t spoil the twist, but the book had me teary-eyed at the end – and then laughing at one final illustration. Short, sweet, and a little bit twisted – and definitely worth picking up.
A strange, surprising little book. Had no idea what to expect, but I'm very glad I gave it a try. It's rather short, so doesn't take long to read. Even though the "characters" are introduced in static panels with one-line captions, readers will get a sense of what they are like, their passions, interests, and insecurities.
Fun illustrations, even a bit moving as it goes along. And a very amusing final panel.
Recommended.
