I enjoyed this book, there was a lot of information packed into a couple tight chapters. The information is invaluable, with in depth explanations of poll taxes, literacy tests, and every other thing that the government did to suppress the black vote. This is good for anyone, whether you are just starting to learn or are more advanced in your knowledge.
I don't think this will be appealing to a wide audience, to me it seemed aimed at people who already shared the author's opinions. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as I myself agree with the author's takes here, but it is for sure a polarizing book. So if you're looking for a way to get your conservative grandpa to understand the issue of voting rights, this is probably not the place to start.
This was a pretty short book with a lot of information. My biggest issue is that it will not reach the people it is intended to reach - those who don't know about the literacy tests, poll taxes, and other such laws that create barriers for people to vote. The introduction read very much like a social media or blog post, blasting the previous administration. My political leanings are extremely far left but it even turned me off a bit. I don't want a one-sided book about politics. I already know the side I'm on. My intentions in requesting this book were to read more into the history of the 'war on voting.' That said, the subtitle of the book is true to what it states - it is all about how the GOP is waging this war, without any real mention of the ways in which the Democratic party also benefits from and contributes to a lot of the problems.
I think with some editing, and more unbiased writing, it would be a stronger message overall and even reach a much wider audience, some of which really needs to learn about these things.
