The first of a new series, Secrets to the Grave by Steve Frech is his fifth published novel. Detective Meredith Somerset and her new partner are called to Willow Lane, a quiet cul-de-sac in Atlanta, where a teenage girl found dead on the street. Canvassing of the neighbours fails to identify any real clues or leads. As the investigation unfolds, we learn more about the background of the two detectives and the personal costs of their policing. As each resident is checked out, their secrets come to light, but the mystery only deepens. Just when all seems resolved, there is yet another twist and action-packed conclusion. With an interesting combination of police procedural and suburban noir, this is an enjoyable read with a three-and-a-half-star rating. With thanks to HQ Digital and the author for an uncorrected proof copy for review purposes.
Meh. It's not bad, but just another thriller centering on a troubled detective.
A story as old as time, as they say.
I suppose that's it for me with this author… I really loved his first two novels exactly because they were so different from this, so innovative, but clearly he decided to specialize in police procedures. There's definitely nothing wrong in that choice and Frech is a talented writer but I liked those stories more.
I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with and ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
A brilliant twisty thriller. Detective Meredith Somerset has a murder case to solve. She also has a new partner, Tyler Foles, who has never dealt with a homicide before. He also has a few personal problems. The case involves a girl found strangled in a small, select close where everyone seems to have secrets. The residents are the only likely candidates for the crime. A gripping murder mystery you don't want to put down.

I thought this book was really well written. Meredith lost her sister when she was in charge of her so she has a soft spot for children and not only wants but needs to find the killer of the teenage girl from Willow Lane.
I found the suspense of the story intriguing. I wanted to keep reading it. I did figure portions out but not everything and I always enjoy that.
I think this could easily be made into a series and I am hoping that Frech continues with this duo and gives us a bit more on Tyler.
Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I can't thank HQ Digital for providing me with a digital copy!
NetGalley Thank you for the opportunity!
And Steve major thanks for such awesome work yet again!
Steve Frech has yet to disappoint me!
I have quickly became a major fan of his writing just last year after reading three of his books back to back!
I was obsessed and couldn't wait for another book to come out!
And here came Secrets to the Grave and to top it off this is going to be a series! (love series)
Secrets to the Grave is a fast paced mystery! A whodunit?
We have Detective Meredith Somerset who I'm a major fan of! I loved her personality, her demeanor!
Who is dealing with some personal issues! A tragedy that happened when she was younger!
But my favorite was Detective Tyler Foles a Vice and Narco Detective who moved up the ranks and up to homicide.
I loved the way he talked, his smartass-ness just his personality in general!
(And I hope we see more of him in the next books to come) hint hint 😉
A murder has taken place on Willow Lane and nothing is as it seems in this tight knit subdivision!
Literally everyone on this street is keeping secrets and nothing is as it seems here!
And Meredith will find out what happened to this girl!
This is the perfect Detective book!
And once again Frech knocked it outta the park with this book!
The writing is spot on and well done! He knows how to keep his readers engaged and flipping the pages!
What can I say he's just amazing at what he does!
PS.... Steve that ending though?!?! Ahhhhhhhh I need book two NOW PLEASE!
I will be sharing to my Twitter and Bookstagram account!
I’ve said it once & I’ll say it again, Steve Frech has yet to let me down!
I thought the storyline was super interesting & I loved how fast paced this one was. I really enjoyed all the family drama & how closely connected all the families ended up being. Also, despite everything, I really enjoyed the working relationship between Meredith & Tyler. I thought the made great partners & really complimented each other.
I’m super intrigued about Meredith’s sister & taking into consideration how the book ended, I’m hoping that her story will be the authors next book👀👀
Thank you Netgalley and HQ, HQ Digital for the arc of this book. There better be a sequel or ongoing series. Meredith and Tyler are such great characters and I can't wait to see what happens to them next. They are both flawed but likable.
The story was interesting and really kept me guessing. I liked having a small group of people to keep track of. The end was surprising!
If you have read any books by Steve Frech, you already know the writing is stellar and will keep you reading far into the night.
A teenage girl is found dead in the middle of the street, and Detective Somerset and her new partner figure she must have been killed by someone in one of the four houses nearby. Every family there is hiding something. I liked Meredith and Tyler and their partnership and would like to read more about them, but I didn't particularly enjoy the actual crime part of the book. The whole thing was kind of a mess. 3 stars.
I loved this book. It was amazing and well written. Meredith was amazing and such an amazing protagonist. I felt for her so much. The twist I wasn’t expecting as well which is always amazing. The ending as well with the final sentence , I WANT A SEQUAL NOW!!!
What just happened! Omg what a cliffhanger! How could you do that to us Mr Frech!!!!
This is the second book I have read by Steve Frech,
This is a fast paced can’t put down crime thriller with a partnership which is up there with the best I have read. I enjoyed getting to know Meredith Somerset and her new partner who has been promoted from vice and narcotics, Tyler Foles. Great character names! They develop quite a chemistry over the few days the investigation takes.
We follow Somerset and Foles as they investigate the murder of a teenage girl who’s body was found in a small street overlooked by just a handful of houses. The fact the girl is wearing only socks leads them to believe she must have ran from one of the houses. And what is the silver medallion hiding in her sock?
Their investigation takes them into the lives of these strange neighbours.
As well as the crime investigation we also get to know about the personal lives of the detectives which are just as big a part of the story as the crime itself.
But that cliffhanger!!
Steve Frech is now firmly one of my ‘I’ll read every book he brings out’ authors.
Thank you so much HQ for allowing me to read this advance copy and please put me to the top of the list for the next in the series!
I would like to thank Netgalley and HQ for an advance copy of Secrets to the Grave, the first novel to feature Detective Meredith Somerset and Detective Tyler Foles of the Cobb County Police Department.
When the body of a teenager is found murdered in Willow Lane, a quiet suburban cul de sac, Meredith and her new parter, Tyler, are on the case. It looks like the girl came from one of the four houses on the street, where there are enough secrets to make everyone a secret.
I thoroughly enjoyed Secrets to the Grave, which has a good mystery and a light, engaging tone that draws the reader in and doesn’t let go. The novel is mostly told from Meredith’s point of view, although the reader gets a glimpse of the other characters’ thoughts, just enough to hint at secrets but not enough to give the game away.
Obviously the murder enquiry is the big thing in the novel, starting with the identification of the victim and proceeding on to why she was there and who she was with. It held my attention throughout and I was particularly taken with the supposed conclusion and the sting of “and there’s more”. I thought it was quite clever and it partly reinforced some of my earlier guesses. The author does not, however, put all his eggs in that particular basket and spends a fair amount of time developing his characters. Tyler has quite a backstory and present and Meredith lives with the fact that her sister, Alice, disappeared as a child on her watch. This plays quite a prominent role in the novel and the choices she makes. I suspect that if the novel becomes a series it will be an ongoing thread and as it’s a bit of a trope I’m not sure how it will pan out.
Secrets to the Grave is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
People are deceptive, what is hidden behind front doors and closed curtains make for fruitful detective stories.
This begins with a female body being found dead on a suburban street. Admittedly it was a foggy morning, but even though a scream was heard, NOBODY came out to investigate!!
I know!! Where I live, the curtains would be twitching in an absolute frenzy, and the neighbourhood watch would be straight on it!! One morning, I was late by twenty minutes, opening my curtains, and two friends were on my doorstep!
The deceased has no identification, and Detectives Meredith Somerset and Tyler Foles, have to question all the inhabitants of Willow Road. They quickly realise most have secrets to hide, and some may be relevant to the case.
I liked these detectives. Meredith is clear thinking in her work, so her personal life is messy. Tyler is almost like a hippie type, relaxed, laconic, but has this air of really being able to communicate with almost everyone, bar Meredith. They make a great partnership, even as they come to blows over personal matters. I hope we meet them again and soon.
I like the writing of this book. Dry, but humorous dialogue between the two detectives, they seem to spark of each other to great effect.
The storylines are very believable, dark and slightly creepy, and this makes you wonder what each character is both hiding and trying to portray.
This is the first book I have read from this author, and I have already downloaded Deadly Games to my Kindle, I don’t normally do that, so that is a very good sign! A name to watch out for.
My thanks to HQ and Harper Collins UK for my digital copy, also Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased review, freely given.
I will leave reviews to Goodreads and other outlets later. I rate this as a five star read.
A digital copy of this book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
Detectives Somerset and Foley are called to investigate the murder of a teenage girl whose body was found face down the middle of the street in an upscale neighborhood. Everyone on the street appears to be hiding something. Detective Tyler Foles is new to homicide and working on his first case. But, he is keeping his personal life private and that puts his new partner at risk. Detective Meredith Somerset is still dealing with her sister's disappearance more than 20 years later. I am a sucker for a police procedural and a series so this book meet all my expectations. There is drama, there is mystery and there is suspense. The author also left the ending open to (hopefully) the next book and I can't wait! Thank you NetGalley, Steve Frech, HQ Stories and HarperCollins
When a teenaged girl is found dead on a quiet residential street, Detective Meredith Somerset is assigned to the case. Not only is she tasked with finding the culprit, she has no idea who the victim is. And she just got a new partner. As the investigation progresses, it’s clear that some of the residents in this quaint neighborhood are hiding some pretty big secrets.
I thought this was a great start to a new detective series with great character development and story line. Meredith and Tyler were a perfect match, both slightly flawed, with a tragic past and very relatable. I loved their dynamics and thought they worked really well together. This also gave me some locked room feels because you only focus on the four houses in the neighborhood and their residents, which were all really well thought out. This book also has an added decade old mystery, and who doesn’t love a mystery within a mystery?!?!? Overall I was a fan and will be looking out for book 2.
I’m pretty impressed that this author has given us four books which have all been quite different from each other. I love not really knowing where he’s going next but I’m coming along for the ride!
Thanks netgalley for this excellent book. After finishing I read there is another book with Detective Meredith Somerset, and I hope Tyler Foles, two great characters.
A young girl is found murdered in Willow Lane, a very upmarket road.
Everyone of the residents of willow lane are suspects, and it is down to Meredith and Tyler to find out which one is a murderer.
A great story and hope I can read the next book in this series.
Patricia found a girl body during her morning jog in a quiet suburban street Willow Lane. It's weird that nobody in the neighbourhood went out from their home even they surely heard Patricia's shocking scream when she found that the girl was dead. No identity found in the body, only a medallion hidden in her sock. So who's this Jane Doe?
Detective Meredith Somerset and Detective Tyler Foles are paired to go with the investigation. They did door to door questioning to Willow Lane residences, family of Bowers, Ansley , Morgan, and Whitaker. Someone in Willow Lane knew what's happened to this girl.
Steve Frech never disappoints how he bring the suspense in each of his books. Story lines and well-developed characters make this book is another unputdownable one from Steve Frech.
The ending will leave you wondering more about Meredith's unfinished past and this will make you wanting more from this author.
After reading 𝐷𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑙𝑦 𝐺𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑠 by @stevewritesstuff I was so excited to see 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑠 𝑇𝑜 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒 up for request on @netgalley!
There are so many things I love about author @stevewritesstuff! Firstly, I find his writing style super unique and fun to follow. His stories are super creepy and dark yet he always includes dry humor between the characters dialogue and I love it! Secondly, the crimes, storylines and twists are super realistic- they won’t leave you thinking “yeah right, that would never happen” or have you rolling your eyes! Thirdly, I always find myself invested in his characters and am always at the edge of my seat following them through dangerous situations!
𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑠 𝑇𝑜 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒 is a crime thriller where Detectives Meredith Somerset and Tyler Foles are paired together to figure out a gruesome murder that takes place in an upscale neighborhood. Both detectives have troublesome pasts which allows for some present issues - but they are both brilliant and loyal detectives! I loved their relationship and hope the author uses this duo in more of his thrillers!

✨✨✨✨
Wow what a great book this is, such a fast paced thriller of a read, brilliantly addictive and I loved every page from the beginning until the end. You can see the friendship from Meredith and Tyler is beginning to develop and that they will become great 'partners in crime', I just cannot speak highly enough about this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and HQ Digital for giving me the opportunity to read this brilliant book and I hope to read number two in this series.
A solid four star read. Good premise. Great characters. Enjoyed t writing style. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing. It even had a twist that I didn’t see coming. Definitely look forward to his next offering. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it
I loved how this book had two separate mysteries and how the trauma of one extended into solving the crime of the other!
Secrets to the Grave explores how not everything is as it seems on the surface: a nice neighborhood, a loving family, profesional careers and even a good relationship with your ex. It’s what is below the surface that can cause harm.
Meredith is lucky to have people that she can trust to have her back.
I am excited to read the next book and follow the story of Meredith and her family.
