I absolutely love Broadway musicals. This book is perfect for someone like me, a musical fan who loves a themed cocktail. Now are the cocktails good? They were amazing. The premise of this book is cocktails inspired by musicals, named after the musicals such as Les Miserables, Hamilton, and of course all of the classics like South Pacific which was just the perfect cocktail on a warm day. I absolutely love this book and if you have a cocktail loving Broadway fan, this book would be perfect! Thank you to NetGalley and Tiller Press for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
The names are very clever but the recipes seem pretty basic to normal drinks you’d find at a bar. It would be nice to have on hand if you’re trying to impress your friends and make them different things. Also would be nice if you’re having themed parties. It’s an okay book though.
A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.
3/5 - Liked it.
This is a great book for those who enjoy musicals and making at-home cocktails. Each cocktail is related to a musical, with beautiful illustrations and musical history accompanying the recipes. I enjoyed the book overall and noted a few recipes I would like to try. There is also a section to help beginner bartenders understand the difference between glasses, liquors, and blending techniques, which I thought was a nice touch. The recipes are creatively named, though unfortunately not always thematically related to the musical - which is really what I was hoping for. The connection to the cocktail seems to be more in the punny name than in the appearance or flavor, which was a negative for me. However, this is an enjoyable book - especially if received as a gift.
Booze Over Broadway isn't just a cocktail recipe book (but it is that), and it's not a how to be the best darn bartender in your suburb book (but it is that too). This volume should never be tucked away on a bookshelf or hidden in the shadows behind your personal home bar. Leave it out on the coffee table, perhaps opened in a deliberately casual manner to the page featuring your favorite Broadway show. Your guests won't be able to resist picking it up to read the fast-facts about the show, ogle a saucy, vintage-yet-not illustration, and lick their lips over a special cocktail designed to go specifically with the featured show. What fun!
With fifty drinks-and-a-show featured, you're sure to find a favorite and your guests will certainly keep you dancing as you serve up a 'Little Shot of Horrors', or maybe a Funny Girl will request a 'Don't Rum On My Parade'. My favorite? Why, 'West Sidecar Story', of course. Or is it 'Annie Get Your Gin'? Aw, shoot!
My thanks to Tiller Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital advance review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Whether you're big on Sondheim or Lloyd Webber, Booze over Broadway aims to have the perfect themed drink for you. From its stylized similarities to a Playbill to the fun facts Tiller Press has included about each featured musical, there's loads of fun to be had within for your average boozy Broadway lover. The book begins with an introduction to the tools of the trade, making it perfect for anyone new to mixing drinks. It then continues with punny drinks which draw their names from an assortment of popular musicals including Cabaret, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, among others. An appendix includes metric chart and index to aid readers as well.
I admittedly am bigger on Broadway than booze myself but found this to be quite a charming little collection of recipes. The illustrations that accompany nearly each musical mentioned in the book were fantastic. I also found the range of drinks and the ingredients required to be quite accommodating to introductory readers. Many of them appear to be simple drinks repurposed for the scope of the book but this is sure to be a treat for anyone who's missed the allure of a theater in these last couple years.
I might give this as a gift but it was not for me. My days of experimenting with cocktails have passed and I settle for an old favorite or simply on the rocks.
Do you have a strong love for Andrew Lloyd Weber or Stephen Sondheim? Do you consider “Defying Gravity” to be the ultimate, underrated karaoke song? Then get ready to raise your glass and belt out that high-C with Booze Over Broadway. Featuring 50 delectable drinks from a rising star in the New York City bar scene, this clever and creative manual allows you to make delicious cocktails right from the comfort of your home. This witty, accessible book also includes commentary, step-by-step instructions, and whimsical illustrations throughout.
For someone who likes classic drinks with a twist, this is a extra for their drink recipe collection. Covering Broadway classics, old and new, with fun facts about some of the shows, the book contains a couple of kiddie cocktails and a lot of boozy ones. Something for almost everyone.
Booze Over Broadway is an appealing collection of recipes combining everyone's perennial favorites, booze and stage musicals. Due out in late 2021 from Simon & Schuster on their Tiller Press imprint, it's 160 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is such an exuberant and well written ode to historical and classic cocktails and they've all been given punny tie-in names ("Life is a Cabernet", "Rum Tum Tugger" and 48 more). The author is clearly enamored of the theatre and has selected cocktails which will enhance watch parties or serve very well as pre-performance aperitifs. This is not just a bar book full of recipes. It's a history essay with recipes interspersed in the relevant stories. The recipes contain which musical they're giving homage to as well as some trivia and info about the different musicals.
Each of the recipes includes an introductory description and yields, appropriate barware and serving glass, ingredients in American standard measures (oz, tsp, etc), and step by step instructions. Variations and alternatives are provided at the end of the recipes. The book also includes a concise conversion chart, and index.
Many of the ingredients should be available at any well stocked grocery/liquor store although some might need to be sourced at specialists. Cocktails are such a civilized interlude and this book includes a solid cross section of classics to build mixology skills and impress one's friends at the next gathering.
Four stars. The recipes are mostly tongue-in-cheek renamed updates on classics (sidecar, Tom Collins, daquiri, whiskey sour, etc). The extra show trivia is nifty though, and worth a look for lovers of musical theatre.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tiller Press, and the author for the ARC of Booze Over Broadway. This is such a fun cocktail book to add to your bar! Perfect gift for any broadway/musical fan in your life. While the cocktail recipes are not anything new---they play off traditional cocktails by renaming them after Broadway shows. The book is filled with Broadway trivia and history. The art illustrations throughout the book are frame-worthy!
*I was given a free ARC from NetGalley*
I am the world’s biggest musical theatre fan. It all started when I saw Annie in Boston when I was six. We had the worst seats. We used those mini binoculars to see the stage better. But I was hooked. Right then and there. In high school, I started to audition for shows myself. It was such a thrill. I continued seeing shows in Boston and one day had an opportunity to see my first Broadway show, American Idiot.
Sadly, that musical is not included in this book, but I figured it deserved to be mentioned. I am now a 27 year old who takes every opportunity she can get to go to NYC and see more shows. Mix that love with some amazing cocktails, and you have this book.
The pictures along with each show themed cocktail were incredible. The names were even more incredible. I wish I had the talent to make fancy cocktails to try them out. You could tell they were given a lot of thought into each drink. This book would be the perfect coffee table book for your home. Something that shows off your passions while also caters to a wider crowd. I would recommend this as a gift to anyone who loves Broadway as much as I do.
This is a delight of a book! Not only are the recipes delicious looking and clever, there are so many facts about the Broadway show each recipe references. From the Golden Age of Musical Theatre up to present day, it is full of information and history. Anyone who loves theatre and cocktails will highly appreciate this book, and I'm already planning to give it as a holiday gift to no less than 10 of my friends. Highly recommend!
What do you serve when Lin-Manual Miranda drops by? A Brandy Alexander Hamilton! Never have I had so much fun reading! Booze over Broadway is a pure delight…and informative as well.
The book is organized into three sections. The first, Overture, deals with glass and barware, techniques, spirits (Amaro to Wine) and garnishes. There are more types of glasses than I thought existed but each will appear in the individual cocktail recipes as part of the guide. New information (for me): the three lines at the bottom of everyone’s favorite red Solo cup are for measuring 1, 5 and 12 ounces.
The section part is Musical Numbers. 50 uniquely named cocktails from 44 Broadway musicals. There are fun facts about each musical - premiere dates, stars, composers and quick synopsis - but in this book, the drinks are the stars. My favorites include:
Life is a Cabernet
Fly High BirdieI
I Don’t Know How to Love Gin
Annie Get your Gin
Everything’s Coming up Rosé
One Drink More
The final section, Close Curtain, gives metric and other equivalent measures.
Illustrated with gorgeous caricatures, Booze over Broadway is a perfect gift for any fan of Broadway musicals or for anyone who wants to take their cocktail repertoire up a notch. You’ll read, you’ll laugh, you’ll buy! 5 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley, Tiller Press and Michael Goff for this ARC.
This would make a great book for beginning home bartenders as there's an extensive introduction going over equipment, types of alcohol, and different types of glasses. Each show featured is given background information before jumping into the recipe, which I appreciate. I didn't find any recipe as new to me though as they just seemed to update names of cocktails to fit the Broadway show theme.
What a delight!
Yes, I need to buy myself a physical copy immediately to try out these recipes.
This lovely book has a whole guide at the front to types of glasses to how to mix and every tool you would need to be a fantastic mixologist.
Then we get a delightful dive into the musicals and their paired cocktails - with fun facts and punnier puns, the cocktails all sound delicious.
Some faves (bonus points if you can guess the Musical):
- If I Were a Rich Man(hattan)
- Once on This Long Island Iced Tea
- Oh What a Beautiful, Mai Tai
- Annie, Get Your Gin
- Defying Grenadine
- They Both Reached for the Gin
- Don't Cry for Me Appletini
- One Drink More
(& the list goes on)
Loved it!
This book would make a great gift for any Broadway fan! It gives a short, yet interesting background on each show included, and also offers easy-to-understand cocktail recipes. I also adored the cheeky names given to the drinks, as well as the delightful original artwork.
My only issue is that there were some BIG shows that were left out. I can't believe there wasn't anything for Phantom of the Opera! Jersey Boys, Book of Mormon, Aida, Waitress, Dear Evan Hansen, Dreamgirls.... I just felt like I would have rather have had more shows included than having some shows have two drinks. That being said, I enjoyed reading this and think it will be one I purchase once it is released.
Broadway and fancy drinks? Sign me up! This mixology book is full of fun surprises, including fun facts about each of the shows included and the inspiration that led to each drink being chosen. Some of my favorite drink names included If I Were a Rich Man(hattan), Brandy Alexander Hamilton, and They Both Reached for the Gin. Like most mixology books, this includes a description of the different glasses, ingredients (alcoholic and flavor additions) that you would need, and also likewise, I'm unlikely to make anything more basic then a rum and coke. But when and if the Tony's ever come back on (look, I'm really excited for Aaron Tveit), I will totally recruit my friends to help me make a few of these to celebrate.
The illustrations this book are a little strange, but whimsical as well, and while I would have loved more color in the pages, it still captured some of my favorite Broadway moments (like Rent's La Vie Boheme, Wicked's Defying Gravity, and just the general energy of Cats). This would be a great guidebook for pregaming for some Broadway karaoke, or for hitting the town before a show in NYC. A perfect mixology perfect for coming out of the pandemic, it's sure to be a hit with nerds like me that wish the world would burst into song. Thanks to NetGalley for an early review copy, all opinions are my own.
This book is such a cute addition for any Broadway and cocktail lover.
The illustrations are really lovely and there is a lot of attention to detail. The fun facts about each of the shows at the beginning gives it a real fun feel.
While the cocktails themselves aren’t especially creative or innovative, the names and the rest of the book really make up for it.
What a charming and funny little cocktail book, perfect for the musical theatre lover! This book hits all the historically important musicals like Cabaret and West Side Story, but doesn’t neglect the modern classics like RENT and Hamilton. (I must confess, the Brandy Alexander Hamilton is my favorite!) With cute bits of history and drinks that each perfectly fit the musical they describe, this book is a must for quarantine boredom and, one day, a perfect theme party. I thoroughly enjoyed this!
