I had not reviewed this book when I read it and it seems like it is even more relevant now that Republican legislators across the United States are making more concerted efforts to legally whitewash history. The book is brief and accessible.
Start Here, Start Now says that it is a practical guide to antibias and antiracist (ABAR) work in your school community and it is exactly that! Tackling everything from making time, working with families and admin, and making sure that the work you are doing is developmentally appropriate in a bite-sized, accessible package.
It's a great introduction to beginning or moving forward with ABAR that makes it feel possible. I'll admit that this year, I have not been able to dedicate time to this type of work as I've found myself drowning in the everyday tasks of teaching. Start Here, Start Now reminded me that it's crucial to make time for this work while also taking care of myself. Quotes like the one above are just nuggets of wisdom littered throughout this book that have helped inspire to tackle the rest of this year with new energy.
I follow Liz Kleinrock on Instagram and am amazed by her content and inspired by her thinking, so I felt BLESSED when I was approved for this book. A huge bonus when authors read their own nonfiction books!
As a relatively new classroom teacher, I am intimidated to introduce these important and impactful topics to my kids. Kleinrock's soothing tone of voice and calm approach to these topics, and responses to potential problems when introducing them were so encouraging and inspiring. I especially appreciate the example scripts she includes.
One quote that stuck with me was "Teach them to navigate the system, but also teach them how to think beyond and reimagine it." What concise framework for never ending tasks and ever widening responsibilities for teachers to come back to.
I am not an elementary school teacher, which this seems to focus on (I did realize this before reading), however the themes are appropriate and applicable to all stages of life, teachers and students. I greatly appreciate the authors compassion and drive to share this topic. Although a relatively brief read or listen, I still learned quite a few themes to use carrying forward in my own teaching methods.
The author clearly understands this topic well with lots of experience. I think she has a great job of incorporating quotes and input from colleagues to use as examples and discussion points, to make this a more well-rounded dialogue. My only criticism is it can be repetitive at times, although this is likely on purpose to reiterate and strengthen arguments made. I recommend reading, it is worth the time investment.
Thank you NetGalley for my free copy. The comments above are my own without influence.
This book is a must read by all educators! It gives specific things that you can do as far as antibias and antiracist work for teachers. The author is insightful, specific and the books very well written.
Such a great book! I can’t recommend it enough to other educators. It’s really changed my thinking for my classroom.

This is an absolute must-read for every kind of teacher, especially the ones that have not yet, or are trying to, implemented the ABAR (Anti-Bias, Anti-Racist) program! This book was narrated by the author which gave an even better reading experience.
Thank you to Netgalley and Heinemann for this review copy.
After having seen this book everywhere on Bookstagram, I was so excited to see this book available on Netgalley as an audiobook. The book is narrated by the author herself which I absolutely love!
Start here, start now is a great book for educators who want to implement ABAR into their classrooms. As a Dutch teacher, not everything is applicable to my classroom, but the book is definitely full of practical tips, links and examples.
Such a valuable book for teachers everywhere. I am so happy I got the chance to read this!
The book is a must-read for people in educational institutions. We should not be a teacher following the age-old syllabus and the old method of teaching. We should evolve and teach based on the current scenario and should talk and make an interactive classroom and remove misconceptions on many topics. The author has shared her personal experience of how she reacts, how she answers, and how she makes the students understand and speak about race, color, stereotypes, consent in a way a student should understand and asking questions before explaining to know what they meant by it.
The author has given the resources that can be used to improve your way of teaching and be an ABAR educator. There are some problems faced by ABAR teachers because it may not be part of the curriculum and how to add as a part of it and how the administration supports or deny it and how to care takers and parents think of it. There are a lot of things and that is explained and it is worth reading(hearing) guys.
Listening to the narration of Start Here, Start Now leveled up my experience. I am a teacher, and I am trying to push for change within my school district so when I saw Liz Kleinrock's book being promoted on social media - I had to purchase it. Having the pleasure of listening to her narrate while reading is something I will definitely recommend to anyone who purchases this book. It is like having a one-on-one class with her!

Start Here, Start Now by Liz Kleinrock is a must read for any person working in the education field! This is a professional development book that offers examples and resources that one can immediately implement into their classroom or building. She offers her personal stories from her own classroom establishing her credibility and her genuine and authentic voice left me wanting to try almost everything she spoke about. I immediately went to gather the resources. Her narration made me feel like this is not just something I should do, but it is something I can do easily. She is down to earth and practical-attributes I appreciate. Liz keep up the great work! Educators around the United States need you and your voice.
