TW - off page death of parent as the victim of a drunk driver
This one is not for those who expect an Instagram-perfect Christmas story. This was a bit of a tough read in places and as I started this, I was a bit unsure of how I felt about it. As the story went on, however, I found myself cheering for Lucy throughout her epiphany, being charmed by the setting, and adoring the dogs.
I’m so glad I read this one.
Thanks to Harper Collins UK / One More Chapter and NetGalley for an eARC of this title. Opinions shared are based on nothing other than my reading experience.
Lovely setting, lovely story hinting at what life can be like when not glued to one's phone. But of course there is more to this book than just that.
I didn't think there was that much wrong with Lucy in the beginning, but I came to like her more when indeed she didn't try being funny all the time. Even if that is part of her character.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
A cosy winter themed romance set in UK and Finland. It was an enjoyable read and tackled the problem of over drinking of alcohol and the impact this can have on someone.
I almost gave up reading this book in the beginning. I was so frustrated when I read that Lucy had got herself into another scrape and the amount of alcohol she was consuming was worrying. There had to be a reason why so I continued. I am glad I did as it all came clear. I liked how the story gradually unfolded keeping me interested. There were some great characters like Skye who was such a good friend and Tommi who stuck with Lucy giving her so many chances. This was a really good read.
Seeing the northern lights tops my bucket list which helped draw me to this title. I loved everything about the setting and would have signed up to trade places with Lucy in an instant. For Lucy though this was not a dream come true vacation. For her it was a necessary trip to hide from the aftermath of an unjust scandal and a chance to reevaluate her life. In the beginning, I really did not like Lucy at all, to the point that I wasn't sure if I wanted to finish the book. I can sympathize with her struggles to a point but she seemed so grossly cavalier about the impact of her choices that it was hard to want to root for her. Lucy does grow over the course of the book although some of the growth seemed a little too instantaneous and easy, much like the romance that you know is coming but still seems to develop out of nowhere. In the end, I liked this book and was happy to see Lucy resolve her issues for me Finland was the star of this story.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A heartwarming and breathtaking journey In beautiful Finland.
I absolutely adored this book. The struggle Lucy has to endure is hard and painful but it was so refreshing to read a struggle to overcome real issues.
I loved the deep friendship between Lucy and Skye and Lucy’s new family in Finland. When Lucy arrives in Finland Tommi is dubious and wonders if she will be more of a hindrance than help.
The beautiful setting adds so many beautiful and glittering elements. The cosy huts are such a lovely contrast to the extreme cold conditions as is the people and bonds between them.
The author explores real issues from sexism to mental health and alcoholism. Each issue is approached with sensitivity but still provides hope to the reader.
This is a wonderful and uplifting read.
This book would pair nicely with a hot chocolate and lots and lots of blankets.
Not your typical lovely romantic story, but enjoyed it nevertheless. Lovely scenery written about too! Perfect read for a cosy afternoon.
I received an advance copy of, Meet Me Under the Northern Lights, by Emily Kerr. This is a sweet love story. Lucy and Tommi are great characters, and the setting is amazing, if a little bit chilly.
I read this in one afternoon. Lucy is not a very likable character at first. There seems to be a huge trend in cozy romances with the arctic setting. I’ve read many of them recently. There also seems to be a trend with having the lead character be an alcoholic or having a drink/party problem which is just not fun to read about. In this book Lucy never really gets the help she needs or talks to a professional about her need to imbibe. seeing thr northern lights doesn’t fix everything.
That being said i still had fun reading the book. The concept was good and the side characters fun. I found it unbelievable that many people from the same town in the UK ended up at the same area in Finland. And even more so that tourists in Finland knew who Lucy was. Just all too coincidental to me.
Lucy gets into some scrapes & a most of them her own doing but this one isn't! Lucy is a dj presenter who seems to be larger than life but things can be deceiving. After a video is shown on line, Lucy is suspended from work. Her friend Skye suggests she gets away to her boyfriends brothers business in Finland. She was on the next plane to Wild Zone to -18c & a completely different place to be. Follow the next few weeks & how Lucy responds to this enviroment & the people she meets.
A great book, with likeable characters & some not so likeable. Emily Kerr's writing brings this beautiful snowy, cold area to life & I'm sure I could feel the cold whilst reading! Enjoyable read.
Not the cosy romance I was expecting, this was more punchy. The storyline was fantastic and I loved the characters especially the way Lucy developed. The scenery was lovely written and made me want to go, A brill read.
This is the first Emily Kerr book I have read but I've already bought Duvet day to enjoy!
Thank you netgalley
YES!!! This book delivers on the romance. I love the depth of the characters and the story. I felt like I was taken to the land of the Finnish and could picture myself looking for the Northern Lights. It makes you take a step back especially during the holidays to appreciate life and quickly things can change. I love Emily Kerr and can't wait to read more from her!
The heroine is a failed radio host so she goes to Finland to find herself. A cosy winter read. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book
Gosh the main character Lucy was annoying at times. She had the perfect job and blew it. I loved how Skye helped and she found love. Finland sounded lovely. Just all a bit frustrating . In the end it all worked out for her . An interesting read.
I thought this would be a fluffy romance for a quick read but it was a lot more -- there is more depth to this story and the characters than I anticipated. It's a fully fleshed out story that makes you reflect while reading it - even when it drags on a bit in parts. Enjoyed learning a bit about the Finnish culture, too.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.
It seems to me that books with Finnish connections are calling out to me, and all the more poignant, as that is where my sister in law is from, so I find myself imagining the places I am reading about...
Now, enough of my nostalgia!
Meet Me Under The Northern Lights is a fantastic book, that follows the downfall of Radio DJ Lucy Fairweather's career, when a clip of her questionable drunk dancing goes viral, but, more awful than the dancing, is the connotations that the awfully edited clip insinuates, as her character is put into question. Was she really flirting with that other presenter, who just happened to be the boyfriend of a celebrity?
Faced with the trolls that support #TeamSerenity, and back the hashtag #LooseLucy, and an endless stream of hate messages, culminating in a death threat delivered to her home, she ends up running off to the furthest ends of Finland, where her colleague's brother-in-law lives.
Can I just say, I felt the cold as I read about her arrival at Wild Zone, the Arctic Circle Experience that her host Tommi, has just set up.
I've not been to Finland in the cold, but I have seen photos of my brother with his eyelashes frozen, just from a walk, so I know there was no exaggeration!
Lucy really does find herself, out in the cold sticks, not only figuring out a way to get out of the viral video hole, but digging deeper, and recognising why some of the issues that have plagued her, have come about.
And of course, there is romance. That gruff, blunt Finn, Tommi, does have a heart, but it takes him a while to demonstrate his feelings.
With a lovely supportive cast of characters, as well as the slime balls, Mike, and Jonny from the radio stations, the reader is taken on a fantastic Arctic journey. Oh, and how could I forget Gurta? Quite key to the story, and several misunderstandings, Gurta is a little star, in herself!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is certainly a book that you can easily lose yourself in very quickly, as soon as I started reading it I was completely hooked. It starts with Lucy, a radio presenter at the height of her career & everything going in her favour, finding herself suddenly falling from grace. With modern life now being lived on & through social media, Lucy finds herself in the spotlight but not in a positive way. She becomes a target of trolling, an all too normalised behaviour in society today! So with her friends help, she finds herself hiding out in Finland, this is when the story really gets going. This is a wonderfully written story with depth, humour, love and loss, lots of snow a little romance and some fantastic characters.
This was my first book by this author and won’t be my last was such a brilliant read and full of heartbreak and escaping away but learning the truth with romance as well and plenty of cold weather ready for Christmas. A great easy read with great characters and brilliant plot that had you gripped very quickly. Well worth reading. Shows how quickly things can change in your life and turning it around again.
Lucy has been to a party for someone leaving her work and she drinks to much wakes up and learns she’s gone viral as someone posted a video of her throwing herself at someone and she is late to work and they aren’t impressed and advise she has time off. She needs to escape and get friends suggest going to Finland and leaves her professional job at the radio behind for a bit to just get away from all the fuss and everyone blames her for the trouble. Problem is she’s far from home and very cold with not the right equipment and she needs to change how she is but how will she cope with the work she’s asked to do to start with everything seems to go wrong. She is soon given some home truths and told she’s drinking to much and it all stems from loosing her dad suddenly and she finds herself talking it all through with someone and will her luck soon start to change being in the northern lights or not. She starts volunteering at the local radio there but doesn’t want to think she’s taken a step back but when someone from her radio station turns up where she is will she learn the truth and will she end up staying it coming home will she have romance or not and will she get her job back if she and then learn the truth.
Worth more than five stars a fantastic read.
***Meet Me Under the Northern Lights is the story of Lucy, a British radio personality who gets caught up in an internet scandal of such proportions that she flees to Finland to escape. The fact that her own behavior has played an integral part in her disgrace is slow to dawn on her. Lucy was a hard character to like even though her motives were good, but the author’s story kept me reading until the end…if only to see if Lucy would be redeemed. Readers get a very interesting flavor of life in Finland during winter at the resort where Lucy is working and where Murphy’s Law seems to follow her every footstep. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book from NetGalley.
I was reading this book while on a beach in Egypt but it still gave me shivers reading about the many layer of clothing that have to be put on just to get outside the door. Lucy a radio DJ is sent to Finland to escape trolls making her life unbearable after a doctored video is posted online and she is let go from her position until such time as things are sorted out. She starts having doubts about how it came to be and these get proved to be correct. She meets and falls in love with a fabulous Finnish guy
