I loved this book! Very fun prompt and amazing writing. Very lovable characters. This novel also brings the very interesting storytelling of a devil being your date. Needless to say I would love that… In general I rated this book 4.5 stars.

I think there might be more to the story with this book. I feel like I read a book in the middle of a series? Well… I will certainly be looking into it and getting the rest! I loved the banter between these characters. I have to know more about this story, i love the characters, the paranormal side of it, it’s just so fun.
Awesome read for anyone looking for a slight freaky Friday mixed with family drama. Definitely had a strong female cast with some King Arthur thrown in. While it’s the second in the series you can read without reading the first. All opinions are my own but I definitely recommend reading this one when looking for a good laugh at how the worst three days can turn into the best three days.
the date from hell follows callie and luke, after the events from the previous book have concluded. after saving the world (apocalypse 0, callie & luke 1), these characters decide to treat themselves and embark on a romanic endeavor together. you might be asking where they decide to travel; their destination is not a typical one, but when in a relationship with a prince of hell, hell itself seems like the natural place to have a date. as expected, these characters have anything but a peaceful getaway. with callie contemplating much as she travels between hell and earth, the question of the redemption of souls comes into play. callie and luke are tasked with investigating whether or not souls can be redeemed, which would alter the way in which hell functions.
i thought this book was a very fun read! it’s a fun twist on a romance novel, with a plot that truly never grows boring. seeing some of the beloved characters from the first book was a treat, and seeing callie’s and luke’s relationship blossom even more was rewarding (although having more of a focus on their relationship would have been nice). even with this lacking, i still breezed through this novel. this sequel could have been even better with a more nuanced and adult style of writing. the word choice in some scenes seemed off; it read more like a fanfiction in some sections, whereas other sections were really well written. overall, this was an average and quick read, with really fun elements. 3/5 stars!
thank you so much to netgalley and st. martin’s press for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
In the second installment of the Not Your Average Hot Guy series, we find Callie and Luke trying to navigate their new relationship. All they want to do is have a quiet, romantic weekend together. But their date turns to Hell when they are tasked to find a wayward soul in order to prove it’s possible to redeem a soul. LIttle did they know redeeming this particular soul would not be easy!
I really loved the first book. I’m not usually a fan of love at first sight books or opposite attract books, but Not Your Average Hot Guy was done well. So I kind of had high hopes for the sequel. Not Your Average Hot Guy was left kind of on a cliffhanger with us finding out Callie isn’t entirely human anymore. I was hoping there would be a lot more explanation behind that. There was some explanation, but I was hoping for more.
But now onto the new book. I didn’t love it as much as the first one. Particularly, I didn’t like Callie or Luke as much. While I reading, each character spoke and acted like high schoolers. Many times Callie would mention what she studied in college and it would remind me again that they are infact not high schoolers.
The storyline itself was a little better than the last one since it was based on a story we all kind of know, The Holy Grail. I also like that the Guardians played a little more of a role in the book. It really have the idea of “good vs. evil” more depth. Plus that added relationship between Sean and the Guardian was enjoyable.
This book is considered a romance. Yes, there is some romance in it, but there is a lot of action throughout the book. Not to mention the romance in the book isn’t what I would consider up to romance standard. Again, it all goes back to Callie and Luke acting like high schoolers. Their “romance” kind of added to that too.
Overall, it wasn’t bad. I give it three and a half stars rounded up to four. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
In this sequel to Not Your Average Hot Guy, we revisit Callie and Luke as they try to advocate for second chances, hoping for a quick audience with Lucifer to kick off date night. Instead, they are sent off after a lost soul and end up on a quest for the Holy Grail. Naturally.
A goofy story following legends, like King Arthur and the round table, and a cast of many characters, including a fainting Pygmy goat named Cupcake, this one is a funny escape from reality that ties up nicely at the end. A light-hearted read with a true paranormal happily ever after.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and St Martins Press for my copy.
So, this book was cute! liked the first book well enough that I was interested in reading the sequel even though it didn’t blow me away. I think the second book was better in that you learn more about the characters as they are more fleshed out. The main character is quirky and funny and Luke is a great male main character. But, my favorite people are the supporting characters. They are so fun!
I enjoyed reading this book, but, I can’t help but find the story too slow and the characters a little flat for my taste. However, in my humble opinion, it’s inclined toward being more YA. Other than that, it was cute and fun. Overall, it’s a 3.5 stars read for me.
I don't like to bash books, but this book just wasn't it... The characters are still so flat, the history is inaccurate and messy at best and the plot makes zero sense. This might have been better marketed for a YA romance, but this is a dud for an adult romance novel.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Callie, a good person and Luke, her boyfriend — and literal prince of hell — have to convince a wayward soul to be saved.
All in all, it’s a cute love story but I had some issues with the writing. It reads more like a YA novel than a romance, and there are some issues (Luke not feeling like he’s deserving of Callie’s love) with the characterizations i could do without.
Seeing that it’s a sequel, i need to go back to the first book to see if my views change.
Unfortunately this just wasn't for me. It wasn't bad, it just felt more YA than adult romance to me. In many places I couldn't help but feel that the characters felt younger than their ages.
In The Date from Hell, the sequel to Not Your Average Hot Guy, Callie, Luke, and their friends are on a new quest - to prove that not all people sentenced to hell deserve to be there. Gwenda Bond does an incredible job making a fun, laugh out loud, and action packed adventure with just the right amount of romance for fans of book one.
All they wanted was to go on a date, but Lucifer has another plan for them. They get stuck chasing a wayward soul around Earth trying to prove he's a good guy, but there are a couple wrenches in their plan. Sean, doesn’t have any interest in being redeemed. Instead, he’s decided to try something new and begins the hunt for the Holy Grail.
Callie and Luke, as always are such a good pair, even as they struggle against the powers of hell and insecurity they are stronger together and their trust in each other makes reading even better.
This was my second encounter with Gwenda Bond's writing. Even though I really enjoyed Not Your Average Hot Guy, and I was expecting something great from this second installment, The Date from Hell definitely hit it out of the park.
Hilariously funny and sweet at times, The Date from Hell provides enough laughter, swooning, and fun, to make it more than enjoyable to most readers.
I received an eARC from Netgalley before I finished the first book and although I made a good faith effort I just had a tough time relating to the characters and situations. It reads like Lucifer fanfic at several points although the plot definitely improved in the second book. The characters read very young for their ages which I think was a problem I had with the writing. It's not all dire-the adventure plot was reasonably engaging but I think there are better paranormal books out there. 3.5 stars.
I read the first book in the series which I really enjoyed. I loved this one. I think if you enjoyed the first one this will not disappoint.
I read book 1 and found it enjoyable, but had quibbles. Book 2 however is hilarious! This was such a fun read and really fixed a lot of issues I had with book 1; this time around, my only quibble was that Luke was sooooo down on himself. And that into all part where mom was so unhappy with Callie and the relationship. But the ending was crazy, in a good way. The Date From Hell was much fun!
First let me say that typically I am not a fan of sequels or Part 2 of anything, movies or books alike. I have found that it is typically very hard to keep the same tone or pace or chemistry throughout continuing story line. But I am super happy to report that Gwenda Bond did just that in her follow up to "Not Your Average Hot Guy" with her upcoming release "The Date from Hell."
The story of Callie, a truly "good" person who works in the family's escape room business in Lexington KY (a huge point in her favor in my book!) and her boyfriend Luke, the literal prince of hell continues in this novel as they navigate their new relationship and the contraints their backgrounds put upon them. We get the entire cast of characters we loved from the first book in this one as well, with the special addition of Sean, a new denizen of Hell we get to meet and discover what his story means to both Callie and Luke and their entire relationship.
This novel is fun, fast-paced and quirky - a fast read that you'll truly enjoy!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press for the advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oof. I.5. I only finished it because I got an ARC and felt obligated. This felt childish and un-charming, with a hugely convenient ending. Not a good start to my year in books!
I appreciate the author's attempt to weave in mythology and history into her rom-com, but it fell flat - much flatter than the first. The chapters were too short, there was this awkward sex scene stuck in the middle of the story, and I really had to force myself to finish it.

The Date from Hell by Gwenda Bond is the sequel to Not Your Average Hot Guy, a paranormal duology of novels that are centered around the story of Callie, a human that works in the escape room business, and Luke, the prince of Hell. In this second installment we get to witness Callie and Luke already in a relationship while they manage the existence of both of their worlds.
Since Callie is travelling back and forth between Earth and Hell, she starts to question the laws of Hell and whether some of the souls have been sent to damnation unfairly. For this, Callie has an idea that wants to set in motion with the help of Luke, but first they must go through Lucifer, who gives them another challenge in order to complete the plan that they have in mind.
I liked this book much better than the first, and I think that the elements that helped with this was the writing style and that the plot involved more action and introduced more characters.
However, I still have a problem with this book being advertised as a romance when it is clearly more centered around the supernatural adventurous plot than the development of the main characters’ relationship. Apart from that it was an entertaining book that had many of the beloved elements of a fantasy book!
I loved Not Your Average Hot Guy, the first book in this duology (?), so I was excited to pick up the sequel. Callie and Luke are back, and once again trying to save the world... or at least the afterlife.
This book picks up a few weeks/months after the events of Not Your Average Hot Guy. Callie and Luke are trying to figure out how their relationship works given that he is the son of the devil and she is human. Callie is travelling back and forth between Earth and Hell, and spending her free time researching the laws of Hell. She is determined to try and find a way to give souls who were perhaps sent to Hell unfairly a second chance. All of this is putting a strain on her personal life, and perhaps her romantic one as well?
When Callie and Luke approach Lucifer about Callie's idea of giving some souls a second chance on Earth, Lucifer gives them a challenge. He releases a soul, and gives them a deadline to redeem his soul. But of course, nothing is what it seems and soon Luke and Callie are chasing a rogue soul around the planet, with their band of friends and enemies in tow.
This book is all about figuring out what you want out of life. Both Callie and Luke are facing big decisions, and it was nice to see both of them finally give voice to what they wanted and fight for it. I also LOVED the ending. I'm still hoping we'll get to see more of Luke and Callie, so fingers crossed for more books!
