Oh, this was a gem. We have a woman who still lives at home, has a sweet four-year-old girl whose father really doesn't take part as he should, and has dreams of doing something special with hospitality. She is working the night shift at a five-star luxury hotel in Miami and really seems to be on the endless loop of going nowhere.
Unfortunately, she is accused of something she didn't do and is canned from her job. She looks at her life and decides she needs a change. She sees there is a Brewery Hotel in Ohio off of Lake Erie and after having a telephone interview with the owner, she makes a decision. She is going to take a leap and move from what she knows and start something new.
Yup, she is leaving warm Miami and going to cold, sometimes frozen Ohio...Yay, I know, huge change.
There is also another big change, the hotel is NOT FINISHED, she has a boss who may know everything about beer...but not so great with people.
Yet, as things go, this is the perfect opportunity for her and her daughter. A cute fun read.
I enjoyed Float Plan last year, and I was excited to start this new release from the same author. To my surprise, the main character in The Suite Spot is the sister of the main character in Float Plan, which is a fun connection.
I loved this book. Kelley's Island was an entertaining choice for the setting, and I was swept away watching Rachel and Mason's relationship grow as they worked together to open the brewery hotel.
I highly recommend this second chance romance for any romance fans!
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review! Going in to this, I don't remember much about Rachel from the first book! These can absolutely can be read as stand alone books! I really enjoyed these characters and was invested into her story! Trish Doller does a fantastic job of dropping us into these beautiful locations and this was a great escape!
This is the second book in the Beck Sisters series and follows single mom Rachel as she takes a new job at Mason's budding brewery hotel. When she arrives with her 3 year old daughter, she is shocked to find that the hotel hasn't been built yet. She considers leaving, but Mason gives her the choice to stay and help him build the hotel from the ground up. In need of a fresh start and new surroundings, Rachel accepts and the two start planning blueprints and picking out curtains. Mason and Rachel's relationship starts off a little tense as Rachel reminds him of everything he lost, but soon they both come out of the fogs of their pasts and come together to build something brand new. I really enjoyed this read and how Rachel and Mason's relationship developed. They were so deliberate with getting the timing right that once they gave in, they were both 100% in which I loved. Rachel and Mason worked incredibly well together and really felt like two halves meeting. I'm not the biggest fan of kids in books but I thought Rachel's daughter was written well. There were also some cute small town moments as well which are always a win in my book. My one gripe would be that there were multiple time jumps of about a month each time and I really missed the character and plot development during those times.
TW/CW: death of a child, sexual assault, suicide

This book is like a warm hug after a bad, cold day. There are some dark issues that are covered but it is done so well and also has such a nice ending that you don't feel the impact. It also correctly depicts my hometown of South Florida which doesn't happen often. It was a nice single mom romance that takes place between south Florida and Ohio. Each character is rich in description and I also liked how we delved into different cultures. Rachel is of German descent and Mason is of Japanese descent. There are many wonderful moments during the story and I think this is best for someone who needs a pick me up.
This is the second book in the Beck Sisters series. I am glad I read Float Plan first so that Anna’s ending wasn’t spoiled for me, but this still could be read and enjoyed as a standalone because Rachel’s journey is completely separate. Like Float Plan, this is such a sweet read that could easily be finished in one sitting – just what I need right now. The side characters were great, and I enjoyed Rachel’s growth throughout… and Mason was just lovely. I will be buying myself physical copies of these books.
I loved that each chapter started with a word, plus a translation (if needed) and meaning. This one in particular made me smile because both my parents are from Trinidad so I know this word well.
“Liming
Trinidadian
‘the art of doing nothing while sharing food, drink, conversation, and laughter’ ”
I was also grateful that a trigger warning was included ‘some of the thematic content within contains sexual assault and mentions of child death and suicide.’ In my opinions they were not major parts of the book but the mention and occasional brief discussion was there.
Thank you so much @smpromance for my digital review copy.
Trish Doller described this as "warm and gentle" and I could not agree more. I don't typically like warm and gentle though, I prefer a little meat in my books- this was too Hallmark-y. There were some deep topics mentioned, but very surface level discussions. The ending was very rushed and not thought out. I wanted to hear other perspectives also.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Suite Spot is the follow-up book to The Float Plan by Trish Doller. The main character in Suite Spot is Rachel who has accepted a job in Ohio at a hotel/lodge that she finds out has not even been built yet. After dragging her young daughter with her from Florida, she decides to give it a shot and accepts the challenge from her new boss, Mason, to design the place from the ground up. He basically gives her the go ahead to do whatever she wants and all she has to do is run her ideas past him first. At first Mason seems kind of standoffish, but Rachel learns early on that he is dealing with grief. Will they be able to work together? Will this place and job turn out to be all she dreams it could be?
I loved this book. Not quite as much as The Float Plan, but I still really loved the characters and the story as it progressed. I can't say that I was surprised by any part of the storyline, but that's ok. It was easy to read and the characters were brought to life in such a way that I was truly pulling for them. I thought the build-up of their relationship was believable and sweet. The supporting characters added to the story in a positive way. I will look forward to Trish Doller's next book.
My sincere thanks to St. Martin's Press/Griffin and NetGalley for giving me the oppportunity to read this book and give my unbiased opinion of it.
After enjoying Float Plan very recently, I was excited to read about Anna's older sister, Rachel. After getting fired from her job in Florida, Rachel has an exciting opportunity for a job in Ohio. With her young daughter, Maisie, she makes the move and meets her new boss and owner, Mason Brown.
I enjoyed this story, for the most part, but there was something missing for me. Mason and Rachel's relationship lacked chemistry. I didn't really buy into their romance. Plus, there were so many things going on with the opening of the brewery and hotel that I felt some were too in depth and some were lacking. Mason is described as "moody" in the summary of the book, but I didn't get that vibe from him at all. He is quiet and reserved, but he's actually a nice man. Also, the ending was a little abrupt. I actually said, "That's it?" after the last page.
I enjoyed seeing Anna and Keane again and seeing how their life together is.
Thank you to Berkley Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
So. Good.
If there's one thing I love, it's a destination romance. The Float Plan gave us a sailboat and a trip through the Caribbean islands and The Suite Spot takes us from Florida to a small island in the lakes of Ohio.
Rachel stands up for herself and promptly loses her job. With the tight nit community of hoteliers, she's basically barred from working in a luxury hotel anywhere near Miami Beach. A tip from a friend and the chance to make a better life has Rachel and her young daughter, Maisie, packing their bags and road-tripping to Kelleys Island. Nothing is ever easy, of course, but Rachel's ability to see the silver lining pushes her to succeed where others would flee.
The dynamics between Rachel and Mason from the start are exactly what I appreciate in a contemporary romance. Trish's ability to give them both issues to overcome and push them together made this an easy and addictive read.
Thank you to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts in my review are my own.
Short Fun Atypical Romance. This is one of those romance novels that is almost more women's fiction than romance. Yes, ultimately it satisfies every "romance book" check box I am aware of, even the most stringent ones... but it really does read as more of a women's fiction "find yourself" type tale. Hell, we don't even meet the male lead of the book until a fairly decent way into the overall text. Quite a few wokeisms tossed in as well, but those are more irritants than true detractions from the tale, and at least a couple of them are actually fleshed out into realistic characters. Overall a solid and fun tale, and *as a story*, very much recommended.
All of this noted, I would be doing readers a disservice to fail to note that after I picked up this book to review last fall, I became aware that the author had signed a petition in favor of banning books because she didn't like them. And this reader does not abide those who ban books, no matter the reason. So this author is now on my "never read again until she recants from book banning" list, though certainly you as a reader of this review and potential reader of this book are more than welcome to do with the information I've provided here both on the book and the author as you will, and I wish you well either way. :)
Thank you @smpromance @netgalley for a copy of The Suite Spot. This was a heartwarming story about starting over. I that Rachel took a chance to go to some place unknown to her to give her and her daughter a better life.
The story is sweet and I enjoyed seeing Mason and Rachel’s relationship develop. I wanted to see more of their interactions and maybe a little less on building the hotel.
I thought the ending wrapped up a bit quickly and felt that Rachel acted a bit impulsively. Overall, this was a sweet friends to lovers, forced proximity romance.
When I read Float Plan, I did not care for Rachel Beck.
This book, The Suite Spot, is her story. It explains her reaction to Anna’s story and why she is the way she is.
When she loses her job and gets to have a new start in a different state, she grabs her belongings and daughter Maisie and runs. She runs from the disappointment, that Maisies father Brian dragged her along for 4 years, that her job let her go, when something awful happened and that she was still living with her mom, in her childhood home.
She thought that her sister Anna had been reckless when she left everything behind and sailed away. But in the end Anna did find her happiness. Now Rachel wants her happy ending too.
I really liked Mason. His back story was heartbreaking. I’m glad he found Rachel.
The friends were something else! Great community on that island!
I was a bit afraid to read this book, not knowing how Rachel, the mean sister, could deserve her own HEA. But I was pleasantly surprised and did enjoy this story!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book just wasn't for me. I didn't find it particularly compelling, and the connection between the two main characters somehow felt much more genuine to me before they got together rather than after. Additionally, there's a lot of detail about her sister, who set off on a sailing journey after her fiancé died by suicide, and her sister's new relationship. I explicitly avoided Doller's first book in this series because of the way she lost her fiancé, so it was frustrating to have to still read what is a lot of information about Anna for a book that's not her's.
I think the final knell for me was the conflict introduced at 90%. I think this is too late to bring in your one last challenge - it's a lot to wrap up in very few pages. But it's also totally manufactured and Rachel even acknowledges that it could have been totally avoided if she'd not gone with her gut reaction. It was super irritating to me.
The Suite Spot is follow up or second book in the Beck sisters series. For those who have read Trish Doller's The Float Plan, you will love The Suite Spot. For those who are new to Trish Doller, seriously check out her other novels ASAP!
Rachel Beck is a single mom who suddenly gets fired from her job as an evening hotel manager in Florida and must find an alternative fast. She surprisingly jumps to take a job as a hotel manager for a quant hotel and brewery in what seems like a fabulous opportunity. However the job is on a seasonal island in the middle of Lake Erie in Ohio. While Rachel is excited to head into this new adventure, the state of the hotel and connected brewery is not exactly what she was expecting. Nor is her new boss, Mason.
The Suite Spot is a sweet romance to its core. The first line of Doller's acknowledgements use the phrase, "a story that was warm and soft" and that is exactly how I would categorize this contemporary romance. The plot is a bit predictable but the reader can get over that because it is also simply charming. One aspect of the writing that I absolutely loved is how Doller started each chapter with a foreign word, including the origin of the word and definition as it applied to the chapter. Such a fun way to introduce each chapter!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin Publishing for an advance copy of this novel. The Suite Spot will be published on March 8, 2022.
When I saw that Trish Doller had a new book coming out, I couldn't wait to dive in, as I absolutely loved her first book The Float Plan. When Rachel accepts a job as a manager of a hotel/brewhouse in Ohio, she packs up her daughter and they set off on a new adventure. What she doesn't expect, is the handsome owner of the brewery and the past he is still trying to heal from. While I liked this book, I didn't love it as much as her first. I missed being totally transported to a fun destination and by the end of the story was disappointed that Rachel didn't learn to stand up for herself, and instead waited for others to do it for her. Overall, it was a fun, quick read, but I didn't love it.
In the author's acknowledgments at the end of the book, she said she wanted to write a book that was "warm and gentle" and I think she absolutely accomplished that with The Suite Spot!
This was the perfect Sunday afternoon read, I finished it in one sitting and really enjoyed it, I don't know if I could have put it down if I wanted to! Just like in Float Plan, there were some heavy topics discussed but not in a way that bogged down the story. While I would have loved more time with these characters and the development of their relationship, the pacing was solid and its length was in that sweet spot (HA! Unintentional pun there, I promise!) for this kind of read.
If you like single-parents, forced proximity, small-town romances, beer, and a fun touch of etymology, you'll love this! I can't wait to see where this series goes next!
I absolutely loved Float Plan, so I couldn't wait to read The Suite Spot by Trish Doller! I read this book on a flight around Christmas and absolutely loved it.
Rachel (Anna's sister) is living in Miami with her 4 year old daughter and her mom and working at a luxury hotel until she is fired for something she didn't do. She's offered a new job at a about to open brewery hotel on an island in Lake Erie and decides to take it. While it wasn't the job and the owner Mason are different than what she expected, Rachel is ready to dive head first into this opportunity.
First, who wouldn't want to stay at a brewery/hotel on an island? I loved Rachel and Mason. This was a slow burn and I liked seeing them go from coworkers to friends to more. The other residents of Kelleys Island are a wonderful supporting cast. The ending was a little abrupt for me, and I wanted to tell Rachel to call a lawyer before panicking but overall I absolutely adored this book! It isn't as heavy as Float Plan, but still looks at some serious topics.
GO READ THE SUITE SPOT!
I was hesitant going into this book because I was not a fan of The Float Plan, but I'm so glad I read The Suite Spot. This book was the perfect getaway from reality while still tackling real world issues. Rachel is such a lovable character, her dedication to her daughter is heartwarming and so real. I love a good slow burn romance and Doller knocked it out of the park. It was so much fun building the resort with Rachel and Mason, while they learned to put themselves first. Each character struggles with their own demons, but overall they learn that they need to be happy and content as individuals before pursuing a relationship. This book deals with grief of a child and other losses, so there were times when it was very heavy, but the characters learned how to be happy despite their losses. Highly recommend for fans of Josie Silver and Colleen Hoover.
