Sometimes after finishing a book I have to think about how I feel about it and what kind of a rating I'm going to give it. I usually don't write a review until at least a day after I read it. I finished the Suite Spot less than 30 seconds ago and I'm already starting this one because it is hands-down a five star review.
I'm typically a reader of thrillers, but after reading the Float Plan last year and falling in love with Anna and Keane, I couldn't wait to pick this one up. I didn't imagine I could love this story even more than that one, but I binged it in two sittings and it warmed my heart on this cold winter day in New England.
This book is sweet and funny while at the same time grappling with serious topics like grief, loss, and what it means to be a good parent. I loved the cultural references in this book and the tip off at the beginning before the book begins from the author that every body is beautiful. A body-positive book that will make you swoon and smile, Trish Doller has done it again 💕✨
Last year, I read Float Plan and fell in love with the adventure in the storytelling. Doller made me want to hop on a sailboat and cruise the world, which was unfortunately thwarted because, while I can drive a boat, I cannot sail, nor do I own a sailboat. So when I saw she had a second book for the series, I raced to Netgalley to request it.
The setting for this book is idyllic. As an avid camper, who spent a spring and summer in my youth, living in a tent in the middle of nowhere, I was immediately drawn to the storyline. Rachel is going through a lot, and Mason is offering her a way to get on her feet and make a fresh start. Mason has been through a lot, and this hotel is his chance to start fresh. He only needs some guidance and motivation, and thankfully, Rachel can offer both.
I would describe this as a slow-burn, clean, closed-door romance. Doller holds out on us with the tension and then glosses over what could be a really hot situation. But this is a sweet, encouraging read that I read in one sitting. I loved the characters and the support that radiated off everyone for each other. I love when people can find their tribe and know they’re in the right place. Overall, this is an enjoyable, feel-good read. Thank you, St. Martin’s, for sending this along.
I loved this story! From start to finish, this one pulled me in! I loved the characters and I connected with them immediately. They are the type of people that you want to get to know. You’ll want to sit down, drink a beer, and discuss a book with them!
When Rachel loses her job at a high-end resort, she knows she needs to find something fast. When she stumbles across a brewery manager position, she accepts and moves herself and her daughter from Florida to Kelleys Island. When she arrives at what is supposed to be her dream job, she discovers a half-completed renovation project, and a brewery and hotel that is not even close to being able to open. She meets the owner, Mason, and decides that she will stay, keep the job, and help get the hotel open.
Mason and Rachel had a great chemistry. It’s not really a trope I can come up with, they aren’t friends or enemies, so I guess it’s a workplace romance, but that doesn’t quite fit either. So…it’s a romance between two people who have chemistry, but some baggage to work through to be able to love one another.
This story brings a variety of body types and cultural backgrounds together, and I really enjoyed how it mixed together. I do want to make homemade ramen now because of this book! I liked how the backgrounds of people are explored and spoken about. It was a beautiful way to honor family that immigrated to America.
I loved the sincere moments and the laugh-out-loud ones! The location is on Kelley’s Island, and of course, I went to google it, and now I want to go visit! I know this lovely hotel won’t exist, but it would be a cool trip. I really enjoyed the evolution of the hotel renovations, the beer brewing, and the romantic relationship. They mixed together to create a beautiful story!
This is the second book in the Beck Sisters Series. I didn’t even realize it until after I finished, and I definitely hadn’t read the first book in the series. It can absolutely be read as a stand-alone, but this one was so good, I know I want to go back and read the first book!
There is a trigger warning for this one: child death (in the past, but discussed)
A huge thank you to St. Martin’s Press for sending me a copy!
4⭐️ 2🌶
CW: sexual harrasment, mentions of child death and suicide
What I LOVED: Trish Doller never fails to write such heartwarming, character-driven stories about self-discovery and finding friendship and love in moments when you need it the most. I enjoyed Float Plan so much and I was scared I wouldn’t love this as much given the excitement with all the traveling in the first book but this cute, endearing story crawled its way into my heart so I have to say that this was just as good!
I loved Rachel so much! She’s strong, hardworking and loving in every way. Between being a mother to Maisie, a confident plus size woman and a hardworker in building a hotel from the ground up, it’s impossible not to admire her.
Mason was just as intriguing! Starting off broody and closed off, it was nice seeing him slowly open up and eventually, show off his nerdy, playful side and his love and passion for brewing beer. It was heartbreaking getting to know his painful past so it was nice seeing him heal emotionally and mentally through his relationship with Rachel.
Rachel and Mason relationship was so wholesome! Starting off as professional boss/employee to a more comfortable friendship and eventually, falling in love was so magical to see unfold. I loved seeing them bond and become patient with each other given the complicated past they both had.
What I LIKED: I was equally enamored with the side characters in this! From Rachel’s daughter Maisie, her book club friends especially Avery and Daniel, their families, there was so much love to pass around. But Yōkai the cat had to be my favorite of course!
Another thing I enjoyed in this was how Mason’s Japanese heritage was discussed especially as someone who loves learning about the Japanese culture. It was nice seeing him reconnect to that side of him and give tribute to it through his brewing. Alongside that, I enjoyed the diversity in both of the main leads’ sides.
Lastly, I really appreicated the chapter headings this book had featuring foreign words that had meanings that couldn’t be easily translated to english. I was happy to see that two of them were from my own language, Filipino.
What I DIDN’T ENJOY: The sexual harrasment scene at tbe beginning and custody war added conflict but it was very frustrating to read still. It felt unnecessary almost.
THIS BOOK IS PERFECT IF YOU LOVE:
• slow burn friends/roommates to lovers
• workplace romance
• small town romance
• single parent tropes
• plus size heroines
This one fell a little short for me compared to The Float Plan. There’s a little bit of heaviness in the story, but was nicely offset by lightheartedness. I loved the brewery, hotel, and design aspect, and thought it set the love story up nicely. But there was no angst and the love story felt more forced and somewhat predictable. Towards the end of the book Rachel made a couple of really rash decisions that didn’t make a whole lot of sense which made me feel really bad for Mason. . I liked that the author touched on body image in this one and that Rachel showed some growth in her confidence.
Thank you for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review
I've been in the biggest reading slump this month due to multiple stress points in life and The Suite Spot was the perfect book to get me out of that slump! Trish Doller books seem to show up in my life when I need them the most, and escaping to the Kelleys Islands with Rachel and Maisie was just what I needed. This is the second book in the Beck Sisters series and while I definitely recommend reading Float Plan first because it is a fantastic book, this book can definitely be read as a standalone if you don't mind some slight spoilers from Float Plan.
I always love to see a plus size heroine in books, so thank you Trish Doller for giving us our time to shine, I already knew I was going to love this book when I read the dedication in the front. Rachel is such a strong character and I loved the way that Doller wrote her. She is so easy to like right from the start and the easiest character to root for as she will do anything in her power to protect her daughter and make a better life for them.
While this book may have a little more romance in it than the first, it still tugged on my heart strings multiple times and had me wiping away tears. Mason has had his fair share of tragedy, and I loved watching him evolve from the recluse hotel and brewery owner when Rachel and Maisie first arrived on the property to learning to live again with the help of Rachel and Maisie. Their relationship felt authentic as they went from strangers to friends and then to lovers, while also still coming to terms with their past. Maisie was an exceptionally well written child character and I loved the scenes between her and Mason, and how she was slowly winning him over without him even knowing it.
This is my favorite book in the series and I hope we will get to see more of the Beck sisters in future books or any of the characters we were introduced to in The Suite Spot, because I enjoyed them all.
Trish Doller's first book The Float Plan and it was one of my favorite books last year so I was excited for her new release this year and it did not disappoint. We are following single mom Rachel who recently lost her job and decides to accept one on an island in Lake Erie. So she packs up her and her daughter to run a new hotel that is paired with a brewery but when she gets thee she realizes that she has played. The hotel is not even finished yet and her accommodations are to stay in the main house with her daughter and the hotel's surly owner, Mason. I loved both aspects of this book, the making of the hotel and brewery as well as the relationship between Rachel and Mason. There were sad parts to this book dealing with a loss of a child so be warned and I would check for trigger warnings if you need them. Overall this book was great but I still like her first book more but this one was solid and I highly recommend both of them. Thank you St. Martin's Griffin for my gifted copy.
Thank you to netgalley for my e-copy of this book!
This story was so cute! I enjoyed Rachel and Mason’s story a lot more than Float Plan, it was just warm and soft and a happy ending for someone who thought they’d never get one. I loved that the setting was beachy, a vacation, filled with a small town of loving people ready for Rachel and Maisie. I enjoyed reading about the cabin and brewery that Mason and Rachel built together, which became their home.
I absolutely loved this novel. I enjoyed the first book in this Series as well "The Float Plan".
Wonderful characters and what a truly awesome. I had a hard time putting this down.
I received a copy of this from the publisher in exchange for fair and honest review.
After reading a couple of memoirs to start off the year, I was looking forward to reading a cute rom-com..and this was just the book! I loved reading about single mom Rachel who was fired from her luxury hotel job in Florida and wound up in Ohio working for an up and coming boutique brewery hotel. I was constantly cheering on the budding relationship between Rachel and her new boss and “roommate” Mason.
Aside from the storyline and romance, I also enjoyed reading a book that was set in Ohio, my home state. It was fun to read the references to my alma mater (Go Falcons!🧡🤎) and my mom’s small hometown♥️
If you’re looking for your next rom-com, I would recommend adding this one to your list!
This was a lovely read. I always enjoy small-town romances that introduce me to a place I’ve never heard of. In this case, the heroine picks up and moves from Fort Lauderdale to a small island in Lake Erie called Kelleys Island. It really exists and I went down a little rabbit hole looking at pictures of this island on google.
Rachel is changing her life because she lost her job working at a swanky, but intolerant Miami Beach hotel after she is sexually harassed by a rich customer. Naturally, the poor, single-mother is the one to have to leave. So she packs up her adorable daughter and moves to help manage a brewery/hotel on this tiny Ohio island that is owned by Mason, a broody and solitary man who is recovering from his own family tragedy.
Of course, Rachel and Mason fall in love while building the business together. You know it’s going to happen because this is a romance, but the road traveling there was sweet and made me want to visit this lovely island.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
It is hard for me to rate this book so I will stick with 4 stars. I was so impressed with Float Plan last year so I was hoping for the same with the story about Anna's sister Rachel. I think it is hard to top Float Plan...
Rachel lives with her young daughter Maisie with her mother and works in a great hotel. But when she is fired (made my blood boil) she needs to make some decisions and applies for a job as hotel manager near Lake Erie. Mason, the owner, is rather grumpy but has a heart of gold and the community surrounds Rachel (and Maisie)... I really enjoyed these parts of the story.
Overall very good writing, loved the characters. The only thing is that I missed a bit more romance overall (even though I adored Mason).
The author has a way with words and does her research. I look forward to the next!
Rachel Beck impulsively takes a job managing a small hotel in Lake Erie after losing her night manager position in Florida. Packing up her life and daughter she makes the drive, only to be greeted by Mason, who doesn't actually have a hotel yet.
The Suite Spot is a charming read, it's pretty low drama despite the mention of some heavier issues, and full of heart. Rachel feels real and relatable and is the sunshine to Mason's grump. I loved all of the side characters and the community of Kelleys Island. If you're looking for something to warm your heart like a Hallmark movie does, this is the book for you.
This book felt like a warm hug. I enjoyed the journey Rachel takes in this book. It felt hopeful and happy. And Mason tugged on my heart with all he had lost and still carried on. The book isn't high drama and I appreciated that fact so much. It felt natural and was a very enjoyable read from start to finish. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Rachel Beck has had her share of things thrown at her but she keeps bouncing back. She doesn't know how to just be. She is raising her daughter Maisie by herself. Through no fault of her own, her world is turned upside down. A call from her younger sister sets her on a new course. Mason Brown is grieving in his own right. He is trying to honor a deal made and is losing the battle. He never laughs or smiles. Posting for a manager for his new boutique/hotel, Rachel and Maisie enter his life. Suddenly things are getting done, sparks are flying and old hurts are exposed. When all is said and done, Mason will fight to keep them in his life and Rachel is beginning to not fall back into old patterns.
I love how Trish Doller puts depth and heart into romance. While writing a story that is completely romantic and swoon-worthy, Doller adds real life issues and struggles into a story to give it the heft that helps us to feel all of the things for the characters in the book. I loved how we could immerse ourselves in the setting of the brew hotel. I love how we felt for Mason and his struggles, but also really enjoyed his threads of Japanese culture. Both added so much to how we felt and knew him. If you want cute kids, a heroine who completely comes into her own and a hero that you just love, this book is for you. If you loved the Float Plan as much as I did, you will love this follow up.
Thank you for this ARC for an exchange for an honest review.
Very good story and a great book. Recommend it.

Looking for a quick, easy read? Perhaps a book (palate) cleanser? Then this would fit the bill for sure.
It follows Rachel (Anna’s sister from Float Plan) on her own love story; one she didn’t think she deserved but most certainly did… it just wasn’t in sunny Florida but rather running a micro brewery boutique hotel in Ohio and falling for the owner at the same time.
Fun Fact: the siblings (Anna & Rachel) always say Ich Liebe Dich (I Love You) instead of the English version and every time I read it on the page, it reminded me of me doing it to my two oldest guys. My eldest was born in Germany so it felt fitting 🥰
Thank you to @stmartingriffen for the gifted copy in return for an honest review. 3.5-4 stars
If you’re looking for a book that feels like a great big hug, then this warm and tender story about a new life and a new love might just be it! Rachel is a single mom, who uproots her life, moving with her daughter, Maisie, from Florida to Ohio. What’s waiting for her in Ohio? A promising new job and her charming and good-looking new boss. But the job is a bit of a bait and switch, and Mason is recovering from his own heartache. Still, these two wonderful characters slowly start to turn their business as well as their personal lives around. What I loved most about Rachel and Mason was their honesty—neither of them played games or pulled punches—because each of them had been hurt in the past, and they wanted to be clear with each other. I found that undeniably refreshing and endearing.
This is book 2 of the Beck Sisters series by Trish Doller, the follow up to Float Plan, a book that I enjoyed reading last year. It was fun to be reunited with Anna and Keane! But you don’t have to read the first book to enjoy the second—it’s a fantastic standalone novel. Both books embrace the idea of starting over and taking chances on life and love.
Sweet romance between Rachel, a single mom, and Mason, a brewery/hotel owner who hires her. Definitely a quick, light read - no surprises and a little predictable - but still enjoyable.
