Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a lovely and short read (under 300 pages) and I honestly would have liked a bit more story. I love the warm hug vibes that comes with a second chance love story; there were similar themes to the Float Plan while feeling like a fresh story with amazing characters.
Love a tiny human in the middle of a romance. Rachel and Mason were so kind and patient with each other…also the maturity. The community on the island was so lovely; it reminded me why I enjoy small town romances.
Excited to see what Doller does next and who the third book will be about!
total fan of Trish Doller books. I was super excited to get this book. Like her stories and this book a lot. Read it today.
This is the 2nd book in the Beck Sisters series, and overall I enjoyed it! I loved the first one and was super excited to read this one. The characters were great and I really did enjoy the story line, but the ending was super abrupt and a bit unsatisfactory, and the interactions related to custody seemed not super realistic to me. I was also surprised how well the 3 year old adjusted to major life changes throughout the book, and how there was little thought as to how a new relationship could affect her. Putting these things aside though, I did enjoy the book and would still recommend it. Thanks to the author publisher and NetGalley for the ARC!
I really enjoyed Float Plan so I was excited to see there was a second book. The pacing was good, the story kept my attention. Would definitely recommend adding to your TBR.
Having enjoyed The Float Plan, I was ready for this next installment in the Beck Sisters series. The Suite Spot by Trish Dollar was described as a comfort read, and it is. While dealing with deep topics, it's still a satisfying read about a woman taking a second chance - at herself and love.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for sharing this book with me. All thoughts are my own.
When Rachel takes a management position at a brewery hotel, she gets more than she bargains for -- in more ways than one. First, there really isn't even a hotel, just the thought of one. Second is Mason. Handsome, yes, but clueless about what it takes to make a hotel work. Plus he's quite grumpy. This trope is one of my favorites and Trish Doller sets the perfect scene. I grew to love the characters and the setting in this charming novel.
I loved this one! It was addictive, as soon as I started it. I remember the story of Anna, book 1. I remember her sister sporatically popping in the first story so I was so excited to start this one! Rachel's life was easy to imagine. She's feeling stuck in a dead end. She's raising a young daughter with a man who doesn't want to commit (or grow up), she still lives at home with her mother and even though she loves her job, she isn't sure it's going anywhere. When suddenly, her life is upended and the things she thought were a sure thing are gone.
Her quick move and the surprise when she arrives was shocking. But I loved the slow burn of getting to know each other and how easily they openned up and their friendship bloomed. I loved the town and locals. The book club sounded intimidating but fun and I loved the yoga! The cat was another cute addition as was Anna popping in randomly with phone calls. Even the details about hospitality and brewing were well woven in and sweetly added. I just fell in love with these two and their lives and I loved this story! There's another one in this series?! I can't wait to read it!
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
Oh my gosh, I loved this book so much. This series is so good, I seriously can’t get enough of it. As soon as I finished, I wanted more. I loved the setting for this book, a cabin setting!? What could be better? I loved the slow burn between Rachel and Mason, it was so worth the wait. Also, Mason is the best, he’s quiet and brooding and just the perfect book boyfriend. If you’re a fan of comfort reads, craft beer, and The Great Lakes, you will love this book. If you haven’t checked out this series yet, I highly recommend it!
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the first book Float Plan - one of my favorites from last year and I should've read this earlier but I kept putting it off(anyone else do that?) 😂
It started off well with single mom Rachel Beck losing her job because of someone else's actions. She gets tired of stuff and does something uncharacteristic by impulsively accepting a job offer at a brewery hotel on Kelley's Island. But only after moving there with her daughter Maisie does she find out that the hotel isn't even complete and the owner - Mason himself is unsure of what must be done. It's not like he doesn't have ideas, but he's shut himself off after some painful experiences and she decides to stay and help him out with the construction, management and everything.
The first half was good imo and Rachel's voice was honest - her struggles, the little jealousy that she feels when she sees her sister being happier and her desire to break out of her comfort zone. Her relationship with her daughter Maisie was so cute and I loved seeing her make friends after she came to the island. Mason was pretty great and it was nice to see him slowly come out of his shell. But as much as I liked the friendship between them, I didn't really feel the connection? Romantically I felt like something was missing. And even though they do talk about his loss, it's not really focused on later. Nor does he get that close to Maisie. I understand his issues but I would have loved more bonding in the end atleast. Also, the custody issue in the last bit was so weird? There were so many ways to solve that while staying on the island but why did Rachel have to pack everything up and leave? It felt so forced! Anyway, the second half disappointed me, but others might enjoy it 🤷🏻♀️ Float Plan still remains my fave and I'll be reading the next book too, but I hope it's better than this one 🤣
I will be the first to admit that I slept on this book for a long time. After reading and loving Float Plan, I have no idea why I let this one sit on my virtual shelf unread for so long. But in the midst of a slump, I solicited suggestions for what to read and the wonderful @bookswithnopictures insisted I would love this one--and she was right!
In The Suite Spot, we meet sailor Anna's sister, Rachel, working night shifts at a hotel and caring for her toddler by day. But after she gets fired for something she didn't do, Rachel decides on a whim to move to states away to a remote island to help run a beer hotel. What she doesn't account for is the hotel being more of a work-in-progress than she was expecting and for its owner, Mason, to be devilishly handsome. A working relationship becomes a friendship which becomes a delicious romantic tension.
I truly loved this book. There were lots of interesting elements at play--the development of the hotel, Rachel making new friends, Rachel's child and family, Mason's backstory. It wasn't quite the tearjerker of Float Plan, but certainly had it's emotional elements. I could have done without or had a toned down version of what I like to call The Big HurdleTM--the standard third act breakup most romance novels come with--but it was over quickly enough that I wasn't too upset.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press for my eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
5 stars - 9/10
I was very interested in this book because of Float Plan. But I just didn’t feel the same connection that I did in book 1. I think the writing was great and it flowed well, but something just didn’t hit for me. It had some cute moments and I think those who like single parent romances would give this a try.
A stand alone novel in the world of the Beck Sisters. I liked Float Plan better but this one was very good as well. Mason was a very charming love interest. I did not like the big event that separated the love interests towards the end, which made the story a little less believable. Most romances have some "thing" that separates the characters towards the end before they finally come back together but I think this one would have been better without that.
Of the Beck Sisters series, I enjoyed The Suite Spot the most. And not just because the heroine has the same name as me (although, it doesn't hurt!). Rachel is raising a young daughter on her own since her ex isn't exactly a doting father, but luckily she has her mom to support her and help put a roof over their heads. When she loses her job as a manager at a luxury hotel in Miami Beach, it feels like the final straw. And it's what ultimately pushes her to take a chance with a management position at a brewery hotel in Kelleys Island, a small town in Lake Erie. She moves cross country with her daughter and what she finds there is a hotel that's barely built and its handsome yet brooding owner Mason is in dire need of someone who can figure out the hospitality side of the house. She approaches the challenge head-on and that's a big reason why I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed seeing the way she thought about the hotel and how she brought it to life. I also enjoyed seeing her simply create a life for herself for the first time as she gets to know the tight-knit community in this quaint town. And naturally, I enjoyed the romance. It's a bit of a slow burn (but not too slow) as both Rachel and Mason each have internal struggles they're dealing with, which made the organic evolution of their relationship that much more satisfying. So if you're looking for a contemporary romance with more of an emotional core, this is worth giving a shot.
As in The Float Plan, change is what happens when it’s more painful to stay than leave. When single mom Rachel is unfairly fired for rebuffing the inappropriate advances of a powerful guest, she leaves behind not just her crappy job, but her mom and her ex, who barely parents, and signs on to manage a boutique hotel with an brewery–agrotourism, if you will. Unfortunately, when she arrives on an island in Lake Erie in Ohio, she doesn’t find a brewery hotel to manage, but rather an incomplete vision of one. Owner Mason is grouchy and guarded and intends to rely on the experience, expertise and taste of his new employee to bring the vision to life. She’s hooked! Details of the scenic setting and antiques shopping rounded out the romance nicely.
A few things didn’t ring quite true. Custody being what it is, you can’t just walk away with your kid, dads have rights. And technically, Mason is Rachel’s boss, irregardless of chemistry, it’s a big gamble, with a kid, to put financial security and physical safety and home at risk. Hence, things move at a slow pace. While Anna and Keane make an appearance, this is stand-alone romance. I’m an unabashed fan of heroines with curves and books with food or design details, so this was a 4 star rating for me.
I received a free advance reader’s review copy of #TheSuiteSpot from #NetGalley back in March, but it expired and I checked it out as an ebook from my local library system.
This was such a lovely story! I really enjoyed Float Plan, and had high expectations for this story as well. I'm happy that my expectations were met. I really love Trish Doller's writing, and I feel like it's getting stronger book by book. That being said, I can't wait for her next book! In The Suite Spot, Rachel Beck finds herself in a sticky situation where she ends up getting fired from her job at a luxury hotel in Miami. Instead of settling for a similar job at a crappy hotel, she decides to take a risk and accept a job working at a brewery hotel on an island in Lake Eerie. When she and her daughter arrive at the hotel, things are exactly as she expected them. And when her daughter's father comes threatening to sue for partial custody, Rachel finds herself leaving someplace she loves to return to a place that is no longer home for her. I love the character development in this story. This is an easy to read story that does mention some heavier topics, but does a good job at addressing those topics. This is a wonderful read that is not to be missed!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.
I absolutely loved, loved this book. I loved the characters Rachel, Mason and Maisy - even the cat Yokai the cat. The book starts off with Rachel working at a high end hotel, raising her daughter while living with her Mom. After delivering a bottle of wine and a cigar to a wealthy client who makes inappropriate sexual advances to her when she rebukes she loses her job. Her sister Anna (from Float Plan book) suggests she apply for this job in Ohio running a brewery hotel - the problem is when she arrives, the hotel is still under construction. This book was great, can't wait for more from this author.
I love these books and am anxiously waiting for the new book coming soon from this author. The Suite Spot was another excellent edition of the Beck sisters series. Absolutely devoured it. It’s all the good you can ask for from a romance and none if the bad/cliche. If you havent read Float Plan - do it! Then move right on to this book.
The Suite Spot is the follow up novel to Trish Doller's The Float Plan. This new novel follow's the original female main character's sister, Rachel, who is safe and cautious and never been out of state. When her career in Florida crumbles, she needs a fresh start for her and her daughter, and takes a new job out of state at a brewery hotel on Kelley's Island. When she gets to Kelley's Island and meets the owner, Mason, she finds quite the challenge and slowly begins to hope for more in life.
I really enjoyed The Suite Spot! For me, I found it that I enjoyed it more than the debut novel of The Float Plan!
What worked for me:
- The relationship. I really enjoyed Rachel and Mason's relationship! The hurdles they had to overcome were realistic and well portrayed. The development and pacing made sense. Mason was supportive and minimal drama.
- Maisie. I enjoyed Maisie's character and I felt she brought a nice element that The Float Plan was missing. She was sweet and endearing and a nice balance for some of the harder moments in the book.
- The return of Anna and Keane. It's always nice to have old favorites back.
- The focus on mental health and the presence of real obstacles that real-life couples often face.
What fell a little short:
- Rachel. I enjoyed Rachel for the most part, but everyone in a while she'd get on my nerves, such as her hasty return to Florida without stopping to think things through and seek advice
- Aside from that, not much else. It was a really enjoyable read.
I would recommend this book for fans of The Float Plan, romance readers, and specifically readers who want a little more grit, emotion, and impact in their romance novels.
I knew I loved Trish Doller’s writing after Float Plan, but this just confirmed she is an auto-read author for me from now on and I’m going to have to check out her backlist!!
Things I loved:
-both characters were so likeable and so deserving of a second chance at finding their person
-Rachel is authentic and relatable
-grumpy/sunshine and add in a cute kid who helps to win over the grump
-loved checking in on Anne and Keane and the references to Float Plan
-sweet and real, and deals with some tough real life raw and emotional issues
I was all about cute towns for my summer reads. The Suite Spot was set in a small town on an island in Ohio.
In the book, Rachel and her daughter pack up and move to Ohio after she loses her hotel job in Florida. She takes a job as the manager of a beer brewery and inn but the job is not quite as advertised.
This was such a sweet romance between Rachel and Mason. I loved the setting and descriptions of the brewery and inn. The small town atmosphere and groups of neighbors were so heartwarming.
The Suite Spot would be another great summer or beach read to add to your list.
