Trish Doller’s Float Plan was a one of my favourite books of 2021 (I had to triple check when I read it because what is time anymore?) so I was SO excited to read The Suite Spot this year, which features the sister of the main character from Float Plan. Rachel’s story has a different feel than Anna’s but was just as amazing. I read The Suite Spot in one sitting because I was so completely invested – but I didn’t want it to end!
Here’s the book’s description:
Rachel Beck has hit a brick wall. She’s a single mom, still living at home and trying to keep a dying relationship alive. Aside from her daughter, the one bright light in Rachel’s life is her job as the night reservations manager at a luxury hotel in Miami Beach—until the night she is fired for something she didn’t do.
On impulse, Rachel inquires about a management position at a brewery hotel on an island in Lake Erie called Kelleys Island. When she’s offered the job, Rachel packs up her daughter and makes the cross country move.
What she finds on Kelleys Island is Mason, a handsome, moody man who knows everything about brewing beer and nothing about running a hotel. Especially one that’s barely more than foundation and studs. It’s not the job Rachel was looking for, but Mason offers her a chance to help build a hotel—and rebuild her own life—from the ground up.
Rachel is a fantastic heroine. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel after reading Anna’s story and was a little wary that Rachel is a mom (I can’t always click with stories about moms – I know I don’t need to “relate to” everything and everyone but this can be a tough one) but I ended up absolutely loving her. She’s pretty accepting of her full bodied figure but struggles with her appearance a little bit, just like most people. It was yet another great reminder that beauty comes in every shape and size and I loved it. I always know I love a character when I wish I could be friends with them and I most definitely wanted to be friends with Rachel!
Mason is a total grump when we meet him but as we learn more about him – and as Rachel and her daughter slowly chip away at his defenses just by being their wonderful selves – the reader learns about his past and his grumpiness all makes sense. He’s not miraculously “cured” by Rachel and their feelings for each other but she helps him open up and gives him the time he needs to work through the issues he has. It was a really refreshing relationship and I was rooting for the pair of them the whole way through the novel.
I found myself really wishing this brewery hotel existed. I don’t live too far from where the book is set so if it was a real place, I could get there pretty easily. Alas, as far as I can tell, Kelleys Island does not boast a brewery hotel as created by Mason and Rachel. Visiting such a place has definitely moved up my travel bucket list and I thoroughly enjoyed the armchair travel part of this book – I appreciated that it was a totally different kind of wanderlust than inspired by Float Plan!
Reading Trish Doller’s The Suite Spot was like getting a warm hug from a book and was exactly what I needed at the time. The novel is well written and full of characters who will feel like friends. I highly recommend reading it!
My review of Float Plan
*An egalley of this novel was provided by the publisher, St. Martin’s Griffin, via NetGalley in exchange for review consideration. All opinions are honest and my own.*
4.5 stars rounded up
Last year, Float Plan by Trish Doller was a five-star read for me, so when I saw that The Suite Spot was available on NetGalley, I immediately requested to read it. I am always so nervous to read books by authors that I loved, in case the next book doesn’t live up to my expectations. Let’s start by saying, Doller is now a must-read author for me, and The Suite Spot is in my top reads of 2022 list.
The Suite Spot follows, Anna’s sister Rachel as she navigates single motherhood, losing her job, starting over, and finding love. After losing her job, Rachel takes a job offer in Ohio, opening a hotel/brewery. Once there, she realizes that Mason misrepresented the hotel being ready to open. She agrees to stay, moves into the upstairs of his home, and works to build the hotel from the ground up.
What I liked: The Suite Spot felt comfortable and reading the author’s acknowledgement, I think this is what Doller was going for. Yes, there is drama and a little sex, but it is also very family orientated and sweet (not sappy). Rachel shines as she starts living for herself – finding her dream job, asserting what she wants, and moving out of her mom’s house.
I don’t think you need to read Float Plan first (although, I highly recommend it), but for me, it was nice to see Anna and Keane again.
The pacing was nice – I think Mason and Rachel’s relationship developed naturally. I liked how they both started getting involved in island life – can I go to book club with Rachel?
What didn’t work for me: I wish we had a little more insight on Mason working through the loss of his daughter and collapse of his marriage. This is me being picky though because this book is clearly Rachel’s story and while Mason is a part of it, he isn’t all of her journey.
Who should read it: You like craft beer, watching Dirty Dancing on repeat, and your ideal vacation is a lake house in a sleepy town. You’re looking for a romance that also has character growth and isn’t super graphic.
TW: sexual assault, child death (before novel begins), grief
Beck Sisters book 3 is to be released in 2023 and I need a copy now.
A comfortable and heart warming romance. Rachael goes out on a limb to get out of Florida with a fresh start with her daughter, to a small Island on Lake Erie. The author deals with grief again in this story, like she did with sister Trish in The Float Plan, but with the hunky character Mason. Some parts of the story line were a bit predictable but overall enjoyable. Great book for a long weekend break or a vacation read to relax and unwind, maybe with a pint. Mason talks a lot about brewing beer so you may get thirsty!
loved this romance and finding love in ohio. I loved that she found her love and realized that she could do it and even make things go better in her life. I loved mason and maise. I also loved seeing keene and her sister. Great story and this author has been auto read for some time. I enjoyed this series.
DNF. I really liked the premise but the writing did not work for me at all. It wouldn't be fair to the book if I finished reading and gave it a low rating.
This was a really good book. Just like the Float Plan it had some depth but was also fun. Thank you for letting me read this book.
This was such a fun and sweet book, and I really loved Rachel and Mason and the progression of their relationship. I enjoyed the Float Plan but I enjoyed this one even more, and was happy to see all of the characters and their growth.
Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me. The story itself is great - heartwarming and lovely. But there's way too few pages for everything to be given the time it needs and many other things that just didn't lick for me. There's a lot that comes across as "this then this then this", which for the emotional topics being discussed, really doesn't work well in my opinion. Additionally, there were thoughts the character's had that felt random and like the relationship wasn't fully able to develop and just a few other things that nagged at me.
I completely understand why so many people love this series of books, but I think I'll have to pass on the next one.
I enjoyed this sweet romance between a single mom looking for a fresh start and a divorced, quiet man who meet while working together to build a brewery/resort on Lake Erie.
Rachel, the main character, is the sister to Anna, the main character in Float Plan by Trish Doller. You don’t have to read Float Plan before you pick this, but it is also a heartwarming read, so keep it in mind!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press/St. Martin’s Griffin, and Trish Doller for an e-arc of The Suite Spot in exchange for an honest review.
When Rachel Beck is wrongly terminated from her overnight hotel job, she throws caution to the wind and accepts a new job in Ohio at a brewery hotel. Rachel packs up and moves with her daughter to the remote small town. Upon arriving, she finds out the job isn’t exactly what she thought and the hotel hasn’t even been built. Mason, the owner of the hotel, convinces her to stay and help him design and build it, and in the process rebuild their own lives.
This was a lot more than I was expecting it to be. I was expecting a fun rom com, but what I got was a heartfelt story about never being too late to chase your dreams and rebuilding your life after everything seems to have fallen apart. Rachel and Mason’s characters were very well written and relatable. I loved the little bits of humor we got alongside the serious discussions. And the small town setting was spot on.
I would have liked the book to have been a little longer to expand on the growth of Rachel and Mason’s relationship as it felt a little rushed, but overall it was a very enjoyable book.
I read this in one sitting! It was so sweet, while also thoughtfully touching on grief and love after loss. Very heartwarming
Single mom, Rachel Beck loses her job as a hotel night manager in FL and decides to take a new job building a new hotel on Lake Erie with a guy who happens to be a bachelor himself. A great follow-up novel to Float Plan by Trish Doller. This is a great romance that will have you rooting for Rachel throughout the entire book.
What a lovely, touching and utterly enjoyable read this was. I truly needed Rachel and Mason in my fictional life right now!

When Rachel was described as having a bountiful figure, I stood up and cheered! When Mason confessed that he preferred a more voluptuous lover over a bony physique, I whooped and applauded. And that steamy scene in the woods!!! I'm still fanning myself!

We need more books like this one that celebrate the average woman in North America and our cultural diversity. Why should the rest of us be left out of all the fun?!!!
A part of Mason's back story was so very, very sad. Rachel supported him and never forced Mason to have to deal with Maisie, one on one, unless he felt comfortable doing so. He was still grieving (no spoilers here) a terrible loss. Rachel was also disheartened by the terrible hand she had been dealt: losing her job at an elite hotel because of a lecherous guest who had assumed that she was part of the room service as well!

Maisie was adorable: her addiction to Moana and her declaration that she and her new friend Leo would get married had me in stitches!

The entire story and its unique cast of characters held my attention from beginning to end. How would Rachel handle that last bit of drama that got thrown at her by her ex, Brian? Mason's wholehearted support was a thing of beauty to behold: a totally awww-worthy scene. Gotta love that beer-brewing, green tea sipping guy!

I'm rating this wonderful novel a 5 out of 5 shining starts: I was truly sorry when it ended. I wanted to stay with the entire Kelley Island clan and be part of that zany, close-knit community. To paraphrase Rachel: it felt like home......

My thanks to the author, her publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Well done!!!
Another solid book from Trish Dollar. This is the second book in the Beck sisters series. Even though this can be read as a standalone, I feel it would make more sense if you do read Float Plan first.
I loved the setting of this book and the premise of Rachel and Mason coming together to open this brewery/ hotel. They each have their individuals struggles and together are able to start to overcome them (very similarly to Float Plan). I like that Trish tackles more difficult subject matter in her books. She does it very tastefully as well.
My only downside to this one, which I felt the same way with Float Plan was that I was rooting more for the two characters on their own. The romance didn’t have enough build up or tension for me. Overall, still a great book that grabbed my attention.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my advanced copy!
This book gets you in the feels pretty much straight out of the gate!! This is a great second book in the series and I like how the sisters really start to understand each other and start to get closer again. I also really appreciate that the formula of romance where they have a big fight that could be solved by communication is not used in this book. They did have a break but for legit reasons, b/c she felt like she had to do what she had to do for the best thing for her kid. I love that she wasn't all "I've got my man, my kid now comes second". I can't wait to read the third book in this series!!
There is nothing more that I love than beer! I initially read The Float Plan last year and was excited to be approved for The Suite Spot, the second installment in the Beck Sisters series. Rachel Beck was controversially fired from her luxury hotel job and suddenly found herself looking for a new job and direction in her life. She takes a risk and takes a job at a brewery hotel on a small island. I loved how easy of a read it was, and that I found myself easily connecting to the Rachel! Also, reading about a brewery hotel was super fun and I found myself Googling to see what brewery hotels there are that I can actually go visit! Definitely recommend the Suite Spot!
The follow up book to Trish Doller's wonderful book, Float Plan, The Suite Spot hits all the right places. A heartwarming love story that follows Rachel, a single mother and hotel worker. When Rachel gets fired from her job because a rich guest tries to touch her inappropriately, her coworker tells her about a hotel being built on an island in Ohio. Rachel decides to take the dive and move with her toddler, Maisie to Ohio to follow her dreams of starting and running a boutique hotel. When she arrives everything in Ohio is vastly different than her life in Florida. The owner of the hotel, a very hunky and rich, Mason, gives her full reign of decor and she ends up not only making a fabulous hotel / brewery but also making all her dreams come true by falling in love with him.
I enjoyed this book so much it was quirky and fun which we all need right about now.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's press for the pre release copy for an honest review.
Rachel Beck is a single mom that just can't seem to find her luck. After being fired from her job, then realizing that her baby daddy isn't going to give her what she wants, she takes a job opportunity in Ohio away from her home in Florida. Only when she gets there, she finds out that the hotel she's supposed to be managing hasn't even been built yet. But the owner, Mason, gives her complete control over the design and as time goes on, Rachel realizes that this small ferry town might be the piece of her life that has been missing.
The Suite Spot was a sweet book. I loved the destination setting and the interior design aspects. I wanted to crawl into the book and go to this hotel. While the book was enjoyable, I was hoping for more from it. It was missing that wow factor that I found with Float Plan. There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with it, but I just didn't love the book how I thought I would.
short: Cute romance about taking chances.
After getting fired from a luxury hotel Rachel takes a position at a boutique hotel/microbrewery in Ohio. Mason, the owner, wants Rachel’s help to make his vision a reality.
What I liked:
🌲The character & relationship journeys. Both came in guarded from last experiences and were able to slowly let each other in.
🌲The setting. I worked in hotels for years so this was right up my alley.
🌲Plus size heroine
🌲The grumpy cat
My thoughts: I loved this book and the unique wilderness brewery hotel they built. I really enjoyed the character arc and community they built, mixed in with book clubs, beer and one grumpy I cat.
I really enjoyed Doller's first book in the series, and here we get to meet her sister who really needs to get a grip on her life. Instead of jetting off to sail the Caribbean, our heroine rapidly loses her job, any desire to remain with her ex (and father of her child), and agrees to take over as manager at a small hotel on an island dozens of hours away. Except the hotel doesn't really exist yet! I thought this was a sweet and cozy romance with some nice side characters. The drama was mainly exterior to the relationship, and trigger warnings for sexual misconduct (thwarted) and a prior death of a child (to my relief, this was back story and not in any way on the page). I have a real sensitivity for child death and felt this was handled just fine- but I always want to know!
I would keep reading more of these, but there are only two sisters. Maybe the next book will take on Mom?
