Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher Tantor audio. I did like listening to this story but I didn't really like any of the characters. The narrator did a good job narrating. Dark and sinister comes to mind when I think of this book.
This was so, so, soooooooooooo bad, I don't even have the words to express it!
I hated the sleazy little b that the main character is and her cheating bastard lover, I hated the slow and repetitive story. Honestly, how many time does O'Brien think is enough to use the same sentence - word for word!? I can't remember the last time I read something so badly written!
There was a moment that's going to haunt me forever,. Something like "It was raining and she decided to go to a store. Of course, she had her phone with her. But she also had an umbrella". WHAT!? What is that! Is she going to turn into Mary Poppins and fly away! What's the importance of this all!???
I don't know, man. It was a pain. I have a lot more to say, but I don't want to spend any more time on this joke of a story.
I listened to the audio version and really enjoyed the narrator, I felt like they were animated and brought the story to its creepy (in a good way) life. This is one of those stories that grabbed me immediately and I just wanted to hear more until it ended. Excellent read!
The beginning of this novel is gripping. In fact, due to a system update my audiobook wouldn’t play on my phone and I was dying to hear what would happen next. I’m usually pretty good at determining the “bad guy,” but this one really had me stumped. Some of the portions of the book were so suspenseful, I couldn’t be alone and read it. Nicely done!
Loved the narration, great plot, definite must listen to! Thank you Tantor, Netgalley, and Kevin OBrien for this in exchange for an honest review. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me.
I am a huge Kevin O’Brien fan. His books always hook me from the beginning, they’re quick, fast-paced and interesting yet this one was just okay for me.
I enjoyed Anna initially, but as the book progressed she became the most frustrating character I’ve encountered. The countless secrets she’s keeping from the police, the justification for being the other woman and the messed up way she willingly became entangled in the Knoll’s marriage was just the tip of the iceberg. There were sooooooo many minor characters that I felt like I needed to start making a chart to keep track of them, and good lord if George isn’t a cringy “nice guy”. Parts in the middle seemed to drag on for forever, but there was enough interesting content that kept me invested.
I was able to figure out the “bad guy” in the end and I did like how it came about, but the wrap up was just messy. Honestly it probably would have been okay if there was no epilogue that straight up ruined the prior 400 pages for me (I mean REALLY ANNA!!!! What the hell) and I despised how O’Brien finished the book, but overall it won’t stop me from continuing to read his work.
Thank you Kensington Books and NetGalley for my ARC of this book
Looking for a great thriller/suspense, then look no further. This book grabs you right from the start and keeps you constantly engaged. Lots of twists and turns have you questioning who did what. Highly recommend!
Anna Malone is a television news reporter with a tragic past. When she falls in love with a married pediatrician, her world begins to turn upside down. It starts slowly with late night creepy phone calls and ends with kidnapping and murder. This book definitely had so many twists and turns. It kept me guessing until the very end, which made this a fast and exciting page turner. I enjoyed.
**A huge thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
4/5 ⭐️
I enjoyed this! I enjoyed the aspect of I never really knew where the story was headed, which is a good sign in thrillers. There was just enough suspense to keep me interested.
A TV reporter is having an affair with the husband of a deaf author that she's recently profiled. When the woman goes missing, both are suspects. The book has lots of really interesting, multi-faceted characters. You're never really sure who's a good guy or a bad guy. The Seattle settings are mostly authentic, and the main characters' residences on floating homes added some unique character to the storyline. The reporter character seems a bit too naive to seem real, but otherwise, I enjoyed the book.
A really fascinating listen. Just finished this Audiobook, did it in 3 days. Great story. Lots of twists and turns with a surprise ending. A beautiful well loved writer disappeared and suddenly she is not the person that she shows to the public, Her husband is having an affair so as in most cases the blame is laid at his feet. That is when all the twists start. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Thank you for letting me listen to this arc. Which also comes in ebook.
Loved the cover and loved the narrator, Kyle Tait. The story gets more and more mysterious with every chapter. What was going on and who was behind this disappearance? Why was this person really missing?
I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next and the writing was good. With cleverly written suspense this took me down a dark and dangerously trap. I will definitely read another by this author.
Thanks Tantor Audio via Netgalley.
The Night She Disappeared by Kevin O’Brien
Anna Malone wakes with a brutal hangover! She can’t remember what happened the night before?!
She does remember eating at a restaurant with her married lover, Russ Knoll and his wife Courtney.
That next morning she finds out Courtney is missing! What happened to her?! Did she take off? Murder?
I enjoyed listening to this book! Kept me interested the entire time! Enjoyed the twists! Although I felt the end was a little rushed.
Thank you Kevin O’Brien, Tantor Audio and NetGalley for the audio to listen to this book in return for my honest review!
The Night She Disappeared
Author: Kevin O’Brien
Narrator: Kyle Tait
Length: 13 Hours and 32 minutes
ARC received: Yes
Plot
After a heavy night of drinking Courtney Knoll goes missing. Courtney is a famous deaf author, but she has recently had surgery to restore some of her hearing. She hides this surgery from her fans as well as her failed book ventures. One of her friends is having an affair with her husband and no one seems to know who Courtney really is but what is she hiding?
Positives
Characters are solidly flawed and no one seems unrealistic. The Night She Disappeared jumps right into the mystery and is a fast starter. The book definitely hits its stride about 20% in and that is where it starts to differentiate itself from other novels like Gone Girl. It has more of a focus on the media reaction to the police investigation than other mysteries because of the MCs job as a reporter.
Negatives
It is too long but not egregiously so. I think the characters are likable enough that the additional length is warranted, but the mystery could have been resolved quicker. Some of the secondary characters were given too much page time for their role in the overall story. The ending is easily its weakest part.
Narration
Clean, crisp sound, Kyle Tait has a good voice for narration. Maybe a tad slow but I generally prefer a faster reading pace. The character voices were very good and Tait makes all of them sound distinct.
Overall
I think as an audiobook, The Night She Disappeared, is worth a listen. I think the narration is particularly good and the mystery itself is engaging. Readers that are looking for an easy read/listen mystery that is a fast starter will enjoy this one.
Rating 4/5
Combine a great audio narration with a tension building psychological thriller and The Night She Disappeared delivers a good story from beginning to end. Local reporter, Anna Malone wakes hungover from a night out of dinner and drinking with Russ Knoll and his wife Courtney. She wakes with an uneasy feeling about how the previous night unfolded, which is partially due to her inability to remember how she got home and made worse by the fact that dinner was with her secret married lover Russ.
The twists were good and kept me guessing till the later half of the story. Overall this is a great thriller, worth the read and one I enjoyed …. so I would easily recommend it.
The Night She Disappeared (Kindle Edition)
by Kevin O'Brien
A mystery with a lot of misdirection and subterfuge that would baffle Sherlock Holmes. The story of the night that the wife of an liaised affair disappeared. With many layers and misdirection's the reader is drawn into the story. It wasn't just the love triangle, it wasn't just the ins and outs of the Television industry that intrigued the reader but the question of the sanity, of the main character that makes this thriller more dynamic. Its a great quick read, made even better as an Audio book, the reader had a great way of heightening the drama, and questioning the viewpoint characters sanity.
This book is about Anna, an on-air news personality. Anna is having an affair with Russ, doctor, and husband to Courtney, an author.
Right away Anna is roped into doing a story about Courtney and the most recent book series she is promoting and then, Courtney goes missing.
I LOVED this book!!!! It was super exciting and filled with crazy and unexpected twists and turns. Please read this book!!! This is an amazing book for mystery and thriller lovers!
3.5 rounded up
Anna Malone, a well known TV reporter, has an affaire with Russ Knoll. After being somehow forced to participate at a dinner with her lover and his wife, Anna drinks a considerable amount of alcohol. She gets pretty drunk and Ross has to drive her home and help her go to bed. The big surprise comes the next morning when her lover is calling her inform her that his wife disappeared. So where did she go? And why are things not adding up? Did she go somewhere or someone forced her to leave? Lots and lots of questions.
The book has a good premise and for the most part is captivating. There are some parts that are very repetitive and sometimes the story goes into too many unnecessary details and background stories.
Kevin O'Brien does a good job throwing the reader off the path and providing a good pool of suspects. The ending although it is surprising, it feels a bit forced. And personally I didn't agree with Anna's choice in the end.
Overall, a nice book!
A big thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read this book!
A Kevin O'Brien "who dun it" novel with flawed characters, deep secrets, and a missing woman?
Yes, this Kevin O'Brien fan was excited about THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED.
Unfortunately, the book did not live up to my expectations.
First and foremost, it was much too loooooooong. THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED was a 13-hour audiobook that easily could have been a 10-hour audiobook.
The book started off strong. Seattle TV reporter Anna Malone drinks too much when dining with her married lover, Dr. Russ Knoll, and his unsuspecting wife, author Courtney Knoll. The next morning when Anna wakes up, she can't remember anything about the night before and is informed by Russ that Courtney is missing. Anna Malone and Dr. Kroll quickly become "persons of interest" in Courtney's disappearance.
Courtney is deaf and Kevin O'Brien's decision to use a deaf protagonist wasn't clear to me.
WHY? I felt like the author was clueless about the emotions and challenges of hearing-impaired women. To the best of my knowledge, I do not know any hearing-impaired women who use a disability to garner sympathy and sell books.
Overall, I felt that the book's plot was too convoluted and simply lacked the excitement and intrigue of Kevin O'Brien's earlier books.
I listened to the audiobook and the narration was superb.
I have not given up on Kevin O'Brien and I look forward to this author's future titles.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
My first book by O'Brien and I was blown away. So many twists and turns. Anna Malone, a TV news reporter wakes up from a night of drinking and she can not remember what happened in previous night. She receives a call from her married lover, Dr Russ Knoll saying his wife Courtney had gone missing. As thenpolice investigates further, their affair comes to light and Dr Knoll commits suicide. Anna turns to a hypnotherapist hoping to regain her memory. But things go so wrong.
Absolutely loved the story line and plot. Just when I thought I had figured out who the killer was, the author throws another twist. Really liked the writing style and the characters.
This is brilliantly written fast paced psychological thriller. I highly recommend this book.
I was lucky enough to receive this ARC audio book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
