Park Rangers and What They Do is another informative book in the Profession Series. This is not a job a lot of people think about, but it is an important one. It is nice to see it included in this series. Once again it includes some descriptive text, a bit of a storyline and lots of definitions and explanations of their clothing, equipment, materials and roles. The information is detailed, but clear and simple for young kids to understand. The illustrations are large, colourful and vibrant. They add a lot to the book and I found we spent a lot of time talking about them and pointing things out. They are diverse and depict females in the role, even though this is a male dominated field. I learned a lot as well about the many and varied responsibilities of a park ranger. My 5 year old granddaughter was not pulled into this one as much as her 8 year old brother, but that tells me this book and series is a great way to teach kids about these careers that are not as well known. This would be a great addition to a classroom when learning about community helpers and careers. I recommend this one to public, school and class libraries. I think it would be appropriate in kindergarten and primary classrooms.
A cute book, but a bit more word heavy than I was expecting with those illustrations. Pretty simple phrasing though and very informative.
This is a cute an informative book about what a park ranger does all day. Even as an adult, I learned new things. I also liked how the main character park ranger in the book is a woman, showing that women can have outdoorsy careers.
What I would have liked to see more of:
- Illustrations of the park ranger using each of the tools, not just a description of how they use it. For example, how does the park ranger use the altimeter to measure the height of the tree?
- What an example management plan looks like in more detail, especially since it is mentioned several times in the book
This book is so adorable. I am obsessed with park rangers and I am reading a bunch of baby/kid books to decide which ones I want to buy. This one is definitely going on my list. This book is geared more towards kids than baby - lots of words per page - but it is absolutely adorable.
So I got the opportunity to read this one with my granddaughter. I am afraid I enjoyed it more than she did but she did ask many questions starting with why. Just like any ordinary 4 year old. With so many opportunities in the world today, children can benefit from books like this to think about how to make the world better. Park Rangers make the parks enjoyable for everyone and are working different ways to keep our parks thriving. Their actions and our actions as visitors make a difference to parks for years to come. If your family loves visiting our National and State parks, this is a great introduction to your children of what goes into a state park. The value of state parks and Park Rangers.
A special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.
This is a great book that introduces kids to park rangers. For anyone who loves nature and wants to know more about how parks are protected and managed, this book will definitely engage those young minds.
With its colorful and informative and fun illustrations, I enjoyed learning the many duties park rangers face in their workdays. I think the text is complicated and wordy for the targeted reader, a toddler. In my opinion, most toddlers will not sit still to listen to the lengthy descriptions! Thank you to Clavis Publishing and Net Galley for the opportunity to review this children's non-fiction book.
This was a very cute book which very thoroughly described what park rangers do. The art style was adorable and the colors were vibrant! It gives an in depth look at the life of park rangers and covers everything from what they wear to what equipment they use. My only concern with this book is the overall length. It is quite wordy and not what I would consider a quick before. bedtime read. Although that could be a pro, depending on how curious the child is about park rangers!
Thanks to NetGalley and the author/artist for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Park Rangers and What They Do has cute, bright pictures that will keep your attention while showing you the day to day of a park ranger. The author details the major parts of a park ranger’s job, tools of their trade, and what a typical day is like for a ranger. It’s interesting to see the various activities a ranger could do through the course of a day, from marking trees to be cut down to counting butterflies.
This is a great book for preschoolers and other nature-loving little children!

This is a great resource to explain to children what the job of a park ranger involves, and to raise awareness of the important role that nature and forests play in our modern world. I loved the illustrations, but thought there was a bit of a disconnect between the illustrations - which I felt were more suited to younger children - and the text, which was rather complex and would be too much for younger children.
A nice guide for children to what park rangers do. It describes their job, clothing, tools, and duties. It was perfect to read to my seven- and four-year-old grandsons before heading to the state park. They were proud of all they knew about park rangers when we arrived.
I received an ARC from Clavis Publishing through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review and am under no obligation to do so.
This is a cute book with wonderful pictures and lots of knowledge on what park rangers do. I didnt know their marking process for the trees that need to be cut down.
An informative read about who park rangers are, and what they do.
This book is definitely a children’s reference book, it is very long and packed full of information - great for reading and learning! I strongly suggest the publisher market it as children’s reference.
If you are looking for a quick read children’s story, this would not be it.
This is a very cute book detailing a day in the life of a park ranger. I didn’t know park rangers did all that they do, so it was very informative for kids and adults as well. There was a decent amount of text and I appreciated the highlighted words. I think that will work well for story time. The illustrations were simple, but beautiful. I loved all of the colors. I would probably recommend this book for children 4+, especially those were are into nature and exploring.
Thank you to NetGalley and Clavis for the advance copy. This was really cute.
The book was very informative for the children and had a lot of information for the children to explore. The pictures within the book helped to clarify some of the words that the children were unsure of.
As we are based in Australia the children did not recognise some of the animals mentioned, ie. 'beaver' which led to further discussion about animals that live in different countries. We were then able to research and explore a variety of animals and map out where each animal lives within the world.
This book was also helpful as it tied into our current class project of 'safety'. We were able to look at the various materials the Park Ranger needed and talk about why they would be useful and in what situations they would be needed. As a class we also looked at the different tools the Park Ranger had and discussed safety measures to use around the tools.
The book is non-fiction but reads as a story, so the children were engaged the whole way through.
Very cool enrichment book for elementary kids! I learned a lot about the many and varied responsibilities of a park ranger and I'm sure kids will find it fascinating too. The information is detailed, but clear and simple for young kids to understand. It's also nice to see the park ranger represented in a BIPOC female, even though the field is still male-dominated.
The illustrations are vivid, evocative, and quite cute. They will work well to engage kids with the information presented.
This would be a great addition to a school or classroom library and a useful resource for units about career exploration or community helpers!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
Wow I didn't realize how much actually went into being a park ranger, so I know this will be informative for kids! I think this would be a great book in an elementary classroom to help kids learn about different careers that might interest them. I like that the main character is female and has dark skin, because young girls especially need to see themselves represented and encouraged in the fields of science. I like the art style too, it reminds me of a kids show on pbs like caillou.
The note at the end says that this book is for preschool and up. I personally think it's too wordy with too big of words /ideas for preschool, but definitely would be okay for older elementary level kids.
Thank you to netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
This is a cute little book about the day in the life of a park ranger. It goes into details about the equipment that they use and how it is used. If you are planning on making a family trip to a national park this would be a great book to read to your children before you go. It will help your child have some information that they can talk to the park ranger about. It also might help some children think about a career as a park ranger.
An informative introduction to the occupation of park ranger for young kids! This book would be great for children ages 4/5+ as it goes over responsibilities and daily tasks of rangers. This would be great for a child who loves visiting parks and forests.
Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for providing this ARC.
This book has bright, engaging and friendly illustrations. It also includes a good amount of information on park rangers and the work that they do. The dress and equipment of the rangers are described as are some of the many jobs that they do. For example, park rangers check on the forest after a storm. They may take people on nature walks. They also may have to decide if there are tress that need to be cut down.
Children may well be intrigued by the many facets of the ranger’s job. At the end of the book there is a quiz in which readers decide in what season a job may be completed.
Young future rangers, enjoy this look at your career.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
