Trying to solve his wife's murder, a professors is mostly out of his depth. Are his revelations as unique to him as he thinks or is he being subtlely manipulated?
Short stories are a sort of contract between readers and writers. When the story is only as long as a usual chapter or two, the writer must flex some serious skills to capture a reader's attention, develop the story, then solve it all while maintaining the grip on a readers attention. Jeffrey Deaver regularly publishes short stories for worthy causes and I have yet to find any that I'd rate lower than a 4. His ability to change topics quickly or even maintain a topic or character through a series of short stories.....anyone read the nameless series?....shows considerable skills. The story told here has a familiar feel. This man's wife dies and he doesn't understand why she was on this particular road and why she died. He uses his own particular set of skills to solve the puzzle. The clues were there, I found them after the reveal, but so well hidden it was surprising.
"Cause of Death" by Jeffery Deaver is a meticulously crafted mystery that unravels with precision and keeps you engaged in its intricate puzzle of clues.
For not even a 100 pages this book felt a lot longer than it was.
most of that had to do with the pretty slow pacing and the tone it was written in that felt a bit like it was just trickling along.
that’s not bad and if you enjoy a quicker read in sense of page count but like the pacing of a longer book? this will be a perfect read.
i prefer a short story to be quick paced and fast acting especially if it’s a mystery or a thriller type of book. if i want slower pacing in that genre i read a full length one! but those short stories? those i read if i want quick action and not a lot of pattering around.
it’s apersinal preference but since i didn’t get what u wanted from this i was a i it disappointed by this especially since the summary sounded a lot more action packed than this needed up being.
overall it’s a good story and as i said if you want something that reads slower paced but is still under a 100 pages and it’s a crime story? go for it!
The characters were well-developed, and I found myself invested in their lives. The plot was well thought out and had enough twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat. I appreciated the attention to detail, and the author did a great job of creating a vivid world that was easy to picture in my mind.
The themes explored in the book were thought-provoking and gave me a lot to consider. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story with well-developed characters.
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with this book and would definitely read it again. It was a great addition to my reading collection, and I can't wait to see what else this author has in store.
I usually avoid short stories and to be honest, this didn't sway me from that decision.
I think if this had more time to develop I would have enjoyed it more but it felt rushed and concluded before it really got going.
Cause of Death is suspenseful and reels you in from the beginning. It's very well written, and kept me entertained. I was able to finish fairly quickly.

I love Lincoln Rhyme and I was thrilled to read this. this is a short story, which I usually avoid, but I wasn't disappointed. Fast paced and thrilling as always I enjoyed this.
Jon Talbot is positive his wife’s death wasn’t an accident and he won’t stop until he knows the truth, even if it kills him too. A wonderful short story by one of the masters of mystery! Be prepared to fly through this story in one sitting, it is that addicting.
Thank You to Amazon Original Stories and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I will read any and all books by Jeffery Deaver, Lincoln Rhyme being one of my favorite series ever.
I don't read a lot of short stories because I find I'm always wanting more, not the case with this one. Cause of Death is one short story that delivered a big dose of satisfaction for me. I enjoyed the characters, the progression and the ending of this quick read.
We meet Jon Talbot at the funeral of his wife Pax, who was killed in a car accident. Jon isn't sure that is how she really died. Being a History professor has taught him to be a detective when it comes to historical events and he uses this skill to put together the last days of her life. It turns out that he didn't know his wife as well as he thought he did.
A quick and predictable read. Although the premise is intriguing the short length of this story doesn't allow a natural development and proper escalation. It's ok to read if you've got an hour to spend.
I received an eARC of this short story from Netgalley.
I enjoyed this. It was a fast paced, interesting read. Had me invested to keep going and see how it ended. A bit unrealistic but a fun read.
Jeffery Deaver can surely writes a story that keeps hooked, this one was no exception.
Gripping, entertaining and full of twists.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
After a long break from reading Jeffery Deaver, I decided to try his writing again with this short story. As always, I enjoy his characters so much. Even though this is short, the characters engaged me from the beginning. I enjoy his detailed writing and so wish this would have been longer so we could have gotten more of it. Fun short read!
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.
With my last couple of reads being disappointed, this was a pleasant surprise. Though short, I love a book that makes me say 'what??' every few pages!!
