I was not familiar with Ms. Ward's work until I was watching coverage of the US's withdrawal in Afghanistan and I wondered how one gets to be an international correspondent. I learned all of that and the very necessary history of recent-- and not-so-recent-- US involvement in Afghanistan and Syria as well as some important reflections on working motherhood (as a new mother myself, this is invaluable whenever it comes from someone with a job that takes them away from what people perceive as the perfect family structure). The writing was excellent and I would recommend this book to anyone.

Clarissa Ward’s book is an eye-opening look into the life of a foreign correspondent. Ms. Ward knows how to get to the heart of the story, whether it it be about wars or natural disasters, often putting herself in the middle of dangerous situations. She reports on death and destruction, always leaving viewers of her stories better informed. With this book, she provides a lot of context to some of the major news stories that she has covered.
