LIKE A SISTER was one of the best mysteries I read in 2022. Garrett has become one of the authors I look forward to reading and each book gets better.
I love a good family drama and Kellye Garrett definitely brought the drama in this one!
She unfolds the drama slowly, giving you enough of a taste that you cannot wait for more, but not so much that you can predict what will happen next.
It was also cool that she revealed bits of Desiree's past through Instagram live posts, that was a first for me. Lena as the FMC is a delight. She is realistic and funny and I could totally see myself hanging out with her.
Overall I would highly recommend this one and will be checking out Kellye's backlist.
Much love to NetGalley & Mulholland Books for my DRC.
Like a Sister is a phenomenal thriller from start to finish. Filled to the brim with twists and a captivating plot, this one is sure to keep readers hooked. The characters are well-developed. The story is incredibly fast-paced. This is one not to be missed! Highly recommended! Be sure to check out Like a Sister asap.
This had me GLUED to my seat. I couldn't stop thinking about this while at work and trying to figure out who dun it?! The twist at the end had me horrified and mind blown and I can't wait to see what else this author has in the works!!
I enjoyed this story so much! From the starts we find out that Desiree is dead and the police have ruled it as an overdose. However, her sister Lena is convinced that this was not the case. So starts the book where she is trying to find out what happened to her sister. We also get a lot of the family drama that went on prior to this happening. The two sisters were not talking at the time when Desiree died. With that comes guilt along with grief.
I enjoyed the writing and the twists and turns this book took!
From a go to author for me, Like a Sister is fantastic! A twisty murder mystery with heart ache yet great storytelling. It will keep you guessing and totally engrossed. I loved it.
The first line in this book was what hooked me. The best opening line I have read in a long time. The rest of the book also delivers. Kellye Garrett is an author to watch in the crime genre.
I was slow to get into this book, perhaps because I was expecting a more typical reality star to be the center of the investigation here. Instead, the victim is the rich spoiled daughter of a music exec, and the narrator her down-to-earth half-sister. The family dynamics are complicated and the heroine is easy to root for. Still, sometimes there are too many possible suspects.
DNF. Unfortunately, this was a book I started multiple times but could just not get into. I appreciate having the opportunity to read this book, it was just not a good fit for me as a reader. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my gifted review copy.
An intriguing murder mystery by the author of PET (and many others since) that will compel you to continue reading to find out the truth behind Lena Scott's half-sister Desiree's death. Half-Sisters who have been estranged for over two years, it may be hard to know who Desiree truly was at the time of her death and at minimum at least to get others to listen to Lena on what she knows of her sister.
As the story unfolds we learn more about Desiree and are introduced to an array of characters. I loved all of the minor characters that we spend even small amounts of time with. I loved the the setting and background story of these two women and their relationship, This story moves at an uneven pace and the front half+ was relatively slow and the last part was quick to twist and turn toward the ending. There was quite a bit of misdirection which was fun but perhaps a tad over used. My main pet peeve in this book was the overuse of the title phrase "Like a sister" - it felt like it was tossed in often and oddly. None of these things though are reason to not pick up this book.
I didnt quite love this book but I did like it, It started off very slow and I kept haveing to go back to some pages inorder to quite understand the whole thing, I read at a very slow paste. I proboble would have liked the book better if I seen an option for audio book instead. but overall it was an ok book
I enjoyed this book! It took me a few chapters to get into but then I read it quickly and was immersed. There were a lot of people who could’ve killed her sister in the book because she was a celebrity and that kept it interesting.
Thank you for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

About the book:When the body of disgraced reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her 25th birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. It’s a tragedy, certainly, but not a crime.
But Desiree’s half-sister Lena Scott knows that can’t be the case. A graduate student at Columbia, Lena has spent the past decade forging her own path far from the spotlight, but some facts about Desiree just couldn’t have changed since their childhood. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. So why is no one listening to her?
Despite the bitter truth that the two haven’t spoken in two years, torn apart by Desiree’s partying and by their father, Mel, a wealthy and influential hip-hop mogul, Lena becomes determined to find justice for her sister, even if it means untangling her family’s darkest secrets—or ending up dead herself

What I Liked:
1. The characters are likeable
2. The writing style was really good
3. The story flowed at times
What I Didn't Like:
1. Desiree's family just seems like they don't care that is dead
2. Let's of jabs at how horrible men are
3. 20 uses of shitnuts 🤪
Overall Thoughts: I wish the basis for her believing that her sister didn't die from a drug overdose of heroin wasn't because she hated needles. She hasn't seen her sister in years but she keeps saying her sister wouldn't do shoot up but she doesn't know. It just felt very weak to the plot.
Then she says that her sister didn't kill herself but then brings up the statistic that over 500 women that are black have killed themselves. So not sure what she was trying to prove there.
Book is predictable. You pretty much know who did it from the moment you meet Erin. She's the last one to see her and she lies to Lena about the guy with Desiree and then blames the guy for her disappearing. There was a certain point where I stopped caring if I was right in my guess or wrong. It felt like this book went on and on and not in a good way. Oh so Stuart killed her. Why? So he just interviewed Lena for what reason in the beginning? What was the point of that?
Final Thoughts: The book was okay. I really feel like you didn't get anything new from this that you haven't gotten from other thrillers. It was middle of the line for me.

Thank you to Mulholland Books, Kellye Garrett, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Synopsis: No one bats an eye when a black reality TV star ends up dead in the Bronx, except her estranged half-sister, Lena, who refusal to believe the official story leads her on a dangerous search for the truth. When Desiree Pierce is found on a playground, in the Bronx, the morning after her 25th birthday. The police and media rushed to the conclusion that she overdosed. Lena knew she would not travel above 125th Street and no one is listening to her. Even through their relationship had been estranged for two years, Lena becomes desperate to get justice, even if it means divulging her family hidden secrets, or ending up in danger herself.
My Thoughts: The chapters are medium length. The POV is told from our MC, Lena, the half-sister with some Instagram posts sprinkled in. The first half of the book to three-quarters was very slow. The last part of the book was better and there was a twist towards the end.
Social media influencer and tv reality star Desiree Pierce is found dead and it appears as the result of a drug overdose. Her half sister, Lina doesn't agree, and although they've been estranged for a couple of years, decides to take it upon herself to find the truth and hopes that she doesn't get killed in the process.
Although a little slow at times, for the most part i enjoyed this read. It kept my interest and attention through out most of the book.
This was a decent read, but it just wasn't for me. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't good! I am particular about anything thriller/mystery and while this one was good I don't think it'll be a favorite of mine. I liked the concept and the characters, but wasn't wowed by the reveals or motivation. Didn't dislike it, but wasn't a favorite. Solid read, though!
A thank you to Netgalley for sharing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
While I really, really wanted and expected to like this more than I did, I also cannot and will not say that it's not a good book because I think that it is. But, rounding back to expectations, I dove in with much anticipation and the impression that it would be a can't stop turning the pages psychological thriller. It didn't keep me up at night (although I did want to finish it) it's definitel not mind twisy nor did it give a heightened sense of mystery and despite the who-done-it angle, it really boiled down family dynamics, the sometimes yo-yo relationship between sisters, power, money, and society, and class. All good things when you're in the mood - just wish I would've been in that mood come my book time.
I found the first half slow and repetitive, but the
second half picks up in my opinion. There are a lot of misleading clues to draw out the mystery and
eliminate suspects until a blinking arrow is pointing at the villain. Fun read. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advanced copy.
