I like what he's doing here. I'm also so wary of this voice because I'm a creative writing professor and surrounded by this voice. It's an interesting new thing for a text to do, irony. To make fun of itself. Although, it can at times feel like reading a pandemic novel in the heart of the pandemic.
I see what this is trying to do. And I get it, for the most part. It’s clever, and who in the literary world doesn’t like to poke fun at a certain demographic? Yet I can’t get past the author’s demographic — him being a white man who comes from a place of privilege makes the whole thing a little sour.
Oh man. This book has been met with a lot of negativity on the internet and I can't speak to all that. Personally, I was pretty underwhelmed by it. The style just never clicked with me. That's not a quality judgment, just not my thing. But I appreciate NetGalley and Little Brown giving me the opportunity to see what all the fuss was about!
This book was difficult to get through and I'm not sure if I am simply not open-minded enough for it or if it is lacking in quality. I think the writing style is not really my type. But I appreciate what it's trying to do and think this kind of book produces interesting literary criticism and discourse. (For instance: the Gawker review, although a pan, made me think of the book differently. It's always good to get validation about something you disliked!)
It was hard for me to set aside my annoyance at the main character and the writing style and make it through and I think that's ok. The perspective of a fuckboy is not really a huge missing hole in the collective consciousness. This book reminded me of another book I read that I can't remember the name of...it's from the perspective of an even worse fuckboy who talks shit about his girlfriend and is overall horrible. I don't really care about these types of books.
I really tried to get into Fuccboi, I really did. I saw lots of excitement online about it, but I just couldn't enjoy it.
It's a "fuccboi" trying to come to terms with the way he goes about his life. The odd slang made it hard to read.
