🔎 As with all Marie Benedict books, I was quickly asking myself, “Why have we never heard about this amazing woman before?” Benedict finds these brilliant women who’s contributions in their fields were so significant and yet sadly are widely unknown.

Rosalind Franklin is no different - a brilliant scientist desperate to unlock the secrets of DNA and RNA during a time when women were not generally accepted in the male dominated scientific community. She was truly a visionary, pioneering the use of X-ray crystallography to photograph the structure of the components of a chromosome. So why is the double helix associated with Watson and Crick, the Nobel Prize winners? *sigh* Unfortunately, it’s a tale as old as time. As we learn, Dr. Franklin discovered the structure and Watson and Crick used her work when they wrote their paper announcing ‘their discovery.’

Rosalind’s unwavering determination to her craft is inspiring and heartbreaking.

The story of Rosalind Frankin is unbelievable in what she accomplished and terribly sad what was taken from her. The author breaks down Rosalind's discovery of DNA into very readable terms, which to me is a remarkable feat

Besides her genius, what's captivating to me is the time she lived in. Born in England's aristocracy where women didn't pursue careers in 1940's, she overcame social and cultural issues of her time. A truly remarkable woman and read, especially how men hid her genius.

While I enjoyed Marie Benedict's writing, as I have with other books she has written, I could not get past the storyline. I was excited to read a fictionalized tale about Rosalind Franklin, a woman who has been largely overlooked by history or at the very least who lost credit due to male-dominated society. She is such an important figure in science. However, I ended up putting down this book after Part I, because I was rather disgusted by how Benedict decided to portray her life. Specifically, the entire first part of the book is about a completely fictional love affair with a superior. I feel like Benedict is choosing to ignore Rosalind Franklin's career, journey, and achievements, and instead, spending time on her relationship with men. I understood that this being a fictional version of her life, and therefore, Benedict took creative liberties. But the feminist in me was just too disappointed to continue.

Another great book by Marie Benedict of a unsung hero of the scientific world. We shouldn't be surprised that ego and machismo interfere with scientific discovery and cooperation among peers. Marie does a great job telling the story of Rosalind Franklin.

wonderful fulfilling novel for the upcoming month of March. Honoring the many women who have done great things. But men always getting the acknowledgement not deserved. Thank you Marie Benedict for telling Rosalind Franklin's story. She discovered the helix in DNA, and M- RNA. If it wasn't for her discovery who knows. The Covid vaccine would be a different story.

The scientist who worked with her. Claimed they discovered it, not so. They lied, cheated, connived, fooled many, to get the recognition. How would you feel if you worked for years. Sweat, and tears and someone else was recognized for work you did. All she could do is sit pretty, and say nothing. They couldn't stand her, it's called a man's world. Full of jealous 😫. Men couldn't stand being upstaged by a woman. She deserved the recognition. Unfortunately after she died was when she was recognized. Thank goodness somethings are changing...

Great Book, Recommend highly. Like all previous novels by, Marie Benedict. Easy to read, sucks you in right away, and a page turner. If you are not in the medical field you may not understand and skip over parts. Luckily, I'm a nurse. I remember my Anatomy and Physiology class doing DNA,RNA. My suggestion is doing some research first. Look for some graphics for DNA helix, and the nucleotides, and their structures, if you took science you most likely know this anyway. 😁

Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Landmark, and to NetGalley for an ARC of this book.

I have read all of Marie Benedict's other books and loved each one. This book was no exception. I love her characters and the way she writes about this one.

This book is about Rosalind Franklin. She was so ahead of her time. She played a major role in DNA..and then men took credit for her work. UGH

I love historical fiction and this was was fantastic. I can't wait to read Marie Benedict's next book.

I did not know much about Dr. Rosalind Franklin before reading this book. I found her work very interesting, especially during a time when Jews and females were not highly regarded. I enjoyed the pace of the book and the tension that was built. My book club chose this for a future read, I can't wait to discuss!

Another wonderful historical fiction by Marie Benedict.
This novel was so captivating and powerful centered on our MC Dr. Rosalind, a scientist who’s work was undervalue in her native London and so she takes an opportunity to go to Paris where she is respected and her work ethic is much valued.. or is it..????

If you are into learning about smart, determined and dedicated women in history then Check this one out.

This book is a fascinating topic but I felt that something about the narration didn't draw me in to the extent that I wanted it to. I kept reading for the story but I felt a disconnect from the characters. I'll definitely be reading more from Marie Benedict in the future though. Thank you for the great book!

When I see Marie Benedict’s name on an historical fiction title, I always take notice and want to read the book. This autor’s wide ranging subjects have included the Carnegies, the Churchills, Agatha Christie and others. Always, the novels have accurate historical detail and a readable and interesting story.

This time, Ms. Benedict turns her attention to Rosalind Franklin. She was a female scientist in a man’s world and one who did not receive the recognition that she deserved for many years. Follow the life and scientific journeys of this woman whose work is essential to our understanding of DNA. She was decidedly an outsider as she lived and worked in several countries but always endeavored to move forward in the pursuit of scientific discoveries. Her story is inspiring and reminds readers of the importance of following one’s dreams and working hard to achieve them.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for this title. All opinions are my own.

I originally requested this book hoping for an interesting for my upper level biology students. This was more than I expected and not something they would make it through.

Marie Benedict has done it again! She has written another well-researched historical fiction novel based upon the life of a relatively unknown woman in history. This novel focuses on British scientist Rosalind Franklin who’s work on the structure of DNA was largely unrecognized during her lifetime. The novel does contain a lot of science, but it was needed to fully explain and appreciate what Franklin accomplished during her short life.

This is a well-written historical fiction novel that I recommend to readers who enjoy learning about strong women in our history or to those interested in reading about scientists. I look forward to Marie Benedict’s next historical fiction novel about another important woman in history.

Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for providing me with an advanced review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Another well researched and well written story by this prolific author. She knows how to write and her research is always well done.

I enjoy Marie Benedict's writing style and you cannot go wrong with this style of historical fiction. This would be a wonderful paired read with the Extraordinary Life of Henrietta Lacks and definitely will lead to some great ethical discussions about proper credit of work. I love that the author uses her voice to showcase important yet often overlooked women and their role in our history. Add it to your TBR list now!
