Every Perry book is interesting. I love the drama, the characters, and the mystery to be solved. So, once again, I was looking forward to her new novel.
I like the continuity of story - this is an aside to the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series and just as good. You'll enjoy the family goings-on and the happy ending for Christmas.
This is one to read when you have a blanket wrapped around you, sitting in front of the fire with a cup of cocoa. Enjoy!
Anne Perry is synonymous with Christmas time reading for me. I look forward to her newest writings every fall.
What a lovely story! This is the perfect Christmas novella about truth and justice and the importance of being good to others. I really loved getting a glimpse of Gracie’s life and who she is throughout this story.
I watch for Anne Perry's annual Christmas story, waiting patiently for this reader's gift from a favorite author. In A CHRISTMAS LEGACY, a young woman's reputation and livelihood are being threatened by several incidents in the home of her employers. To better investigate, Gracie will stand in for this young woman, only to learn that the employer's are hiding secrets they would kill to protect. The story winds through many threads to reach a startling end. An excellent read and now I have to wait another year!
A Christmas Legacy is a heartwarming and suspenseful historical mystery novel set in London in the late 19th century. The story follows Gracie, a former maid who is now married and has a child of her own. When her friend's daughter, Millie, comes to her with a story about missing items from the kitchen of the household where she works, Gracie agrees to take her place for a few days to investigate.
Gracie soon discovers that the couple who employs Millie are neglectful of their elderly grandmother, who lives in the upstairs bedroom. The husband and wife are hoping that the grandmother will die soon so that they can inherit her money. Gracie is determined to help Millie clear her name and to protect the grandmother from further neglect.
A Christmas Legacy is a well-written and suspenseful mystery novel. Perry does a great job of creating a vivid and believable setting, and the characters are well-developed and sympathetic. The story is also thought-provoking, raising questions about the treatment of the elderly and the importance of family.
I would recommend A Christmas Legacy to fans of historical mysteries and to anyone who enjoys a good story with a heartwarming message.
Here are some of the things that I liked about the book:
The characters were well-developed and sympathetic. I especially liked Gracie, who was a strong and resourceful woman.
The setting was vividly described. I could picture the London streets and the interior of the household where the story takes place.
The mystery was suspenseful and well-plotted. I was kept guessing until the very end.
The story had a heartwarming message about the importance of family and community.
Overall, I thought A Christmas Legacy was a well-written and enjoyable mystery novel. I would definitely recommend it to others.
I absolutely love Anne Perry and she didn’t let me down! This book makes you feel so many emotions, I love to read books like that. Thank you so much for writing us another wonderful book Anne!
This book was so good! I want to see more from this author in the future!! I couldn't put this book down. What a page turner!!!
A big thank you to the author Anne Perry, the publisher Random House, and NetGalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my candid review.
I love Anne Perry's mysteries. The take place in the early 1900's in Great Britain and give a good idea of how life was for women and in this book, servants. This book is about the wife of a police constable who enjoys solving mysteries, usually assisting her husband. But this time, she is called upon by a daughter of a family friend who is concerned with a mystery going on at the house that she is a servant in. Desserts are disappearing. And something strange and upsetting.
It is a great story of greed and loyalty and how family is not always the family that you were born into. This is a great story.
Anne Perry offers a Christmas story with a happy ending using one of her minor characters from her regular series books. Samuel and Gracie Tellman have been both friends and employee's of the Pitts. They are now married and have a visit from someone from their past who needs their help. Gracie goes to take her friends place and discovers an old woman in the attic who is being kept until she dies so the occupants of her house, her son and his wife, can inherit. Gracie makes the woman comfortable and helps the staff avoid being sacked by the daughter in law. This brings about the warm Christmas surprise to end the story. These short novellas are nice and comfortable and a joy to read for a lift to your spirits.
I really like this author so was looking forward to the new Christmas novel. I enjoyed the read. Set in Victorian England, Gracie goes into a manor undercover as a maid. She had been a maid years before she married and started a family so it was easy for her to blend in with the staff to solve the thefts. There was a mix of sadness and joy as she unraveled dark secrets of staff and family.
Clean easy read with a good ending
This is the first book I have read from the author. It is a novella. It is a sweet story. It would be a great book for a young teen reader. It might encourage them to want to read more and that is always a good thing. Gracie is the heroine of the story. She was a servant in a “proper ladies home “ when she was younger. Now she’s married with three children. Gracie is always ready to help some of the young servants when there are problems in the houses they serve. The story moves very quickly- almost to quickly at times for me. I would read other books from this author, especially if they were full length. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy for my honest review.
Another excellent Perry Christmas story. The Victorian setting, characters (especially Gracie), and the mystery will draw you in at the first page. While a quick read I hope we hear more about these characters in future stories.
As always, the annual Christmas book by Anne Perry was a joy. Her historical fiction is wonderful and Victorian London is a perfect setting. I have read several of these books, but I think you can jump in and read this without having read the others. However, this Thomas Pitt series is worth reading more. I highly recommend this one. Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Random House Ballentine for allowing me to read this book. I do not know why I forgot to leave feedback but as a huge Anne Perry fan, I truly enjoyed this book. This book centers around Gracie and Millie. Millie is scared she is going to be fired because things in the house are going missing, Gracie decides to go in her place. What she finds... I enjoyed this book!
I love this series and A Christmas Legacy was a great addition. The mystery was good and I loved visiting with the cast of characters, especially during their Christmas season.
Many thanks to Random House Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Each year Anne Perry delights her readers with an elegant Christmas story. And each year, despite my personal protestations to the contrary, I find myself drawn to read the new offering, and to enjoy the story immensely. May Anne continue to celebrate the Yuletide season by gifting us with another heart-tugging story.
The title is a bit misleading, as this is no warm Christmas tale of cheer but rather a mystery set in victorian times. Something is amiss in the household and the servants are afraid. It is an entertaining read with a happy ending.
Gracie, the former maid of the Pitt family, conducts an investigation to help a fellow domestic. It is a sweet Christmas story.
A Christmas Legacy is the ninetieth book in Anna Perry's Christmas Stories series. I have read a couple of them before so when I saw the new one available on Netgalley, I jumped on the opportunity to request it. I was intrigued by the premise and the promise of an endearing Christmas mystery. And it didn't sound a murder mystery either!
Gracie is the former maid of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. She recently got married and thought she was going to settle down as a stay at home mother while her husband worked within the police force. That is until a good friend's daughter shows up asking for her help. The home where she works has had things starting to disappear from the pantry and she is fearful she or another member of the staff will lose their jobs if this is not resolved quickly. Gracie agrees to take over the position temporarily until the mystery is solved and it isn't too long before she realizes not everything is a well beneath the surface of the household.
What is going on behind the scenes is actually heartbreaking. The owners of the home have their elderly mother tucked away upstairs suffering from neglect. The items that were starting to become missing from the pantry were actually items that staff was bringing upstairs to help the woman. As someone who has spent many years working in the field of elder care and who hates seeing any type of neglect, this honestly broke my heart.
Anne Perry paints a picture of interesting many different characters. As a reader I found myself empathizing with all of them. Well, not all of them as it was hard to empathize with the two main characters who were neglecting their loved one. I mean, I understood that they may have been overwhelmed and as this is set during the Victorian era, there were not very many resources. I did not understand how they could just leave her alone with limited food and hygiene options. Especially when it was obvious that the staff was willing to provide assistance. So heartbreaking!
A Christmas Legacy is set during the holiday season and I enjoyed the way the Victorian household was being set up. The Victorian era is one of my favorites to read about and I love to immerse myself in these old houses and traditions. Overall, it was a quick read, and I don't think you necessarily have to know the history of the characters to find yourself enjoying it.

What is your favorite historical time period for novels? I love reading about all time periods, but Regency, Victorian, and Medieval times are my favorite. A Christmas Legacy by Anne Perry is set during the Victorian era at the start of the twentieth century.
Gracie, the former maid to Thomas and Charlotte Pitt, spends the Christmas season helping out Millie, the daughter of a late friend. Millie is sure something isn’t right in the household that she works in, and Gracie takes her place as a maid to investigate. Once there, Gracie realizes that there is a mysterious presence hidden on the upper floor. Why is someone hidden in the house? And why does Millie think items are disappearing?
This was a sad and touching story. I was appalled by the treatment of the mysterious person in the household but touched that the household staff pulled together to try to help out as they can. The ending of this story was very satisfying. This book works as a standalone novel. I read this right before Christmas, and it put me in the Christmas mood. I’ll be reading another Anne Perry mystery next year.
