I received an advance copy of, The Bright Side Running Club, by Josie Lloyd. Wow what a book. Keira has an amazing attitude towards life, then she is diagnosed with cancer. Meeting fellow cancer patients and joining a running group together. Such an uplifting story.
One of my favorite parts of reading is how you are transported into a situation outside of your normal life, and live it with the character every time you pick up your book. While sometimes this can take you to new worlds or exotic places, sometimes it just puts you in a real life situation and gives you insight into something you've never experienced.
This book pulled me into a world of cancer. I have been the nurse nursing people through cancer, and I've been the daughter watching her dad go through cancer, but this showed me the life of a 40 something year old mom who is shocked when she finds out she has cancer. It goes through reactions from friends and family, the stress of body image changes and insecurities, the pressure put on family, the need to be with people who understand. I teared up at one point, and then again in the author's note when I realized the point I had teared up at had actually happened to the author.
This was a really special book that was very moving to read.
