This is a good guide to content writing and getting published. I highly recommend this to intermediate writers and those just seeking to learn a new skill.
This was an excellent, informative compilation of everything a writer would need to know to begin pitching and selling magazine articles. Some of the information may seem too basic for more experienced writers, but the Writer's Digest series of books are for writers at all levels, so they cover it all, soup to nuts, and better too much information than too little. (You can always skip over what isn't of interest.)
As a writer who hasn't gone to school for journalism or writing formally in general, it can kind of feel like a daunting task to figure out how to ease into that career. This book is a great resource for those who are just getting started and for anyone who maybe is an article writer and wants to use this as reference material. For instance, if you want to avoid commonly used phrases, there is a little list in there that will help you with editing. What I loved the most is that it provides ample examples and checklists to make sure that nothing important is missed. Not only that, there's also information on payment negotiation which helps immensely in knowing what to expect with submissions. All in all, I found this to be a very valuable resource.
I enjoyed this book because of it's writing style (no pun intended!), unique topic, and the fact that it really provided a thought-provoking experience. Recommended for readers who want to read slowly so as to take time to process.
I can't express how timely this book was for me! I was able to use many of the best practices provided to improve my writing. I provided this book as a recommendation for many of my friends interested in writing engaging prose.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is filled with great advice and very encouraging information. I highly recommend it.
As a person who has always wanted to write magazine articles this came at the perfect time as now that I am retired I can get into more writing and maybe have something published one day.
A great guide to help you along on a journey to better writing, better preparation and better organisation. It is full of hints, tips and suggestions, it has different advise from other professional writers and is easy to follow and easy to read.
This will be a go to reference for me in the future and should be read by anyone interested in writing magazine articles as well as other writing as there is great advise to be had.
Writer's Digest Guide to Magazine Article Writing A Practical Guide to Selling Your Pitches, Crafting Strong Articles, & Earning More Bylines by Kerrie Flanagan is an insightful and informative read. I enjoyed the author’s upbeat style and tone throughout, especially regarding rejections. A book that I am sure I will read again and again.
This is a great reference book. As a newbie to writing articles for magazines, the guidance in this book will definitely help me pitch more ideas to my fave editor. . And maybe reach out to other magazines as well.
So glad I read it.
An excellent guide to writing magazine articles with tips on how to get your article published.
Thank you to Kerrie Flanagan, NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC of this book.
Writer's Digest Guide to Magazine Article Writing is a good entry to content writing and is full of tips and suggestions on tackling getting published. It feels like real-life advice and not uppity at all, which I really appreciated. It shows how and where to find ideas in the first place and what to write about. Further contents are queries, contracts, and payments.
I can recommend this to anybody who is interested in writing and getting published.
This book is extremely comprehensive. It offers step by step instructions when warranted. It offers ideas about being creative and also about researching the magazines you plan on propositioning. Overall, very informative!
My degree is in fashion journalism so this book instantly caught my eye to check out. I love learning anything new to improve my skills and sharpen my craft and this is a perfect guide for someone who works in magazines or hopes to one day.
Very clearly and to the point writing guide to getting started writing articles for submission to magazine. The author provides all the details needed for the novice freelance writer. If you ever have considered writing an article, this book is for you.
"Writer's Digest Guide to Magazine Article Writing" is a pretty comprehensive book on how to get published in a magazine as a freelancer. It touches upon all of the steps any writer has to go through in order to see his text in print - from the planning, initial research, and pitching, to actually getting through with the article, including different writing advices, some of which are very valuable.. It also has a few chapters on planning and setting basic goals, which is very nice. There's nothing much else I can say about it, to be honest.
The Writer's Digest Guide to Magazine Article Writing is a comprehensive guide to writing articles for publication.
I found the book very knowledgeable with great insights for getting your writing published!
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A good book for writing content for magazines, the web and newsletters. It's useable, and shares a lot of content that I often see people asking about in writing groups or in writing courses. Overall, this is a book you could regularly return to, especially if you're starting out with content writing. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A Satisfying Resource…
A satisfying resource from Writer's Digest. From basics and onwards and upwards through to publication and associated matters, this is sure to be of great value to anyone interested, or indeed already involved in, magazine article writing of any kind. Plenty of tips too and areas that, perhaps, you may not have previously considered. An easy reading guide written in a sympathetic tone.
Writer's Digest Guide to Magazine Article Writing is a concise and informational primer full of tips for content writers by Kerrie Flanagan. Released in 2018 by Penguin Random House, it's 232 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. It makes searching for info so much easier with the search function. This is a book where I spent a fair bit of time flipping back and forth to gain context and check information.
The author does a good job of providing information in accessible and logical manner. The very basic info (how to start, what outlets to target, judging the right outlet for each article) is provided before moving on to more specific/specialized areas (improving writing skills, deadlines, and polishing finished writing).
Although slanted at beginners, I found some good info here for improving and polishing my own blog and review posts (finding a formula which works for you can be a *good* thing - and brevity isn't always a good thing).
All in all, this is a good compendium with lots of advice for nonfiction article writing. While much of the information may be somewhat obvious (don't miss deadlines) and can possibly be found elsewhere, the author has gathered everything together in one package, saving the reader the effort of finding it elsewhere and wasting time looking.
Four stars. Well written and useful. This would be a good choice for writers' home libraries, public or school library acquisition, writers' groups, and similar.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
