This book was adorable!! I was drawn to it first of all, because I love reading books about books and secondly, I also love a good romance story. So I was happy to start this one and had high hopes going in. Once I started reading it, I wasn’t able to put it down. The storyline was fresh and entertaining. This book was super predictable but that’s okay because it made for a light and easy read which was exactly what I needed. I loved Laneys character but I think my favorite is Alice, the tortoise! So fun! This book left me with happy, feel good vibes.
Thank you Net Galley and Penguin Group Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons for the ARC in return for my honest review!
By Any Other Name was a delightful story by Lauren Kate. I am partial to the literary world's stories, and this book did not disappoint. Lanie works as a romance editor and has the opportunity of a lifetime open up - working with her favorite author, Noa Calloway. However, the task proved to be more challenging than she anticipated. Noa Calloway suffers from some major writer's block, and her manuscript is months overdue. Lanie takes Noa on a series of outings in order to help her find some inspiration. This story was light, funny, and romantic, making for a quick read.
Ok. So this book is fine, but it didn't really work for me. Lainie is a romance editor who suddenly gets to work with her very favorite author, Noa Calloway, who is so famously reclusive that she doesn't even have an author photo. When she finally meets Noa, she is shaken to her core.
Laine's carefully constructed life starts to fall apart as she works with Noa to shake the persistent writer's block plaguing the author.
I'm trying not to say very much in case of spoilers (though it's maybe not much of a spoiler).
This book just didn't work that well for me. There were a few turns of phrase that had me cringing, and some major issues with pacing. Particularly at the end of the book. To me, it felt like it ended at the second to last chapter. Or it as least needed an epilogue.
There's a lot of potential in the story, but it's a meh for this reader.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Two stories intertwined together!
Lanie Bloom will get a promotion to editorial director if she can get Noa Calloway to turn in her next manuscript because it is four months late when she takes over as her editor and she needs to help remove her writers block. But only her boss has seen Noa because she doesn’t do any publicity of her books, and everything has been through her assistant or by emails.
I’m not usually a fan of books that have two stories intertwined but By Any Other Name works because you get the manuscript that is finally turned in and the romance with Lanie, but we finally get to see the reasons Lanie fell in love with romances and publishing.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The good news: Lanie's been promoted to editor, and her biggest client is her favorite author. The bad news: the author has writer's block, and Lanie's promotion depends on getting the author to turn in the book by the deadline. Worse, discovering the author's real-life identity shakes Lanie's world. What will happen when her personal and professional lives collide?
I loved this book. It's smart and has all the feels. Lanie has a strong voice that pulls you into the story from the beginning. She's a hopeless romantic who discovers the world isn't exactly the way she wants it to be—but she comes out stronger for the experience. And sometimes, falling in love really is like a romance novel.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
This book is so cute! It's a short and fast, read in one sitting kind of book and sometimes that's just what a need in a weekend. I really liked Lanie, but Noah is definitely a contender for a top book boyfriend. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Oh, look. Another fantastic book involving the publishing industry. Swoon! I have quite a few novels on my TBR list this year that feature authors, books and the book business. This is so fun! By Any Other Name reads like a love letter to books AND New York City, which I found super enjoyable. This story is sweet and poignant, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The friendship between Lainie, Meg and Rufus is delightful. Of course, every scene with Noah and Lanie left me wanting more. I enjoyed the character growth as both protagonists had much to learn and overcome. This is a slow-burn romance with a deeply satisfying conclusion.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the early copy. All opinions shared here are my own.
This was cute. I liked how Lanie had to come to terms with herself a lot throughout this book with Noa's Identity being revealed. it was a fun and cute quick read.
4.5⭐️
This book was amazing!!! I sat down and read it in one sitting. It was totally uplifting and had me all over with emotions. I was smiling, giddy, laughing, sad, and my heart was just so warm at certain moments. I absolutely loved ALL of the characters! Everything went together so smoothly. And the ending had me swooning. I just wish we got a little more of the romantic relationship or an epilogue for the two love interests!
This one was so stinking cute! I really loved the story within the story. The older characters are SO loveable. Friendships here are amazing. Following Lanie through this part of her life was also so exciting!
Grab this one on Tuesday, March 2nd! You won't want to miss it. ❤
Thank you Penguin Group Putnam, NetGalley and Lauren Kate for the opportunity to read this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I wish there were 10 stars to give, because this book deserves more than 5 stars! Perhaps one of the best, delightful romances I've read in quite a while, By Any Other Name introduces us to Lanie, a budding romance editor that is given the most difficult project of her life: cure her favorite author's writing block.
Having lost her mother at a young age, she grew up learning about love from her grandmother. But when she read her first ever Noa Calloway novel, she immediately had a list of 99 things her great love would fulfil. Now she has the opportunity to publish the newest Calloway romance. There is one slight problem: there is no novel.
We are taken for a ride where Lanie attempts to "bring back the magic" for Noa with trips all around NYC to spur inspiration for the new novel. We are also introduced to some cute and cuddly characters: the tortoise Alice and the bunny Javier Bardem.
Lanie discovers answers to secrets she never imagined and finds herself questioning everything she ever thought about love. This story makes your heart soar with the building romance between the two main characters (details left out to prevent SPOILERS). I did not want this story to end!

Quick Synopsis: Assistant editor Lanie Bloom has only ever spoken to bestselling romance author Noa Callaway via email. When Lanie is unexpectedly promoted to Editor, the role comes with one condition: get Noa Callaway’s new manuscript by the impending deadline. When she finally comes face to face with the author who has had such an impact on her life and career, everything Lanie believes is turned upside down.
My Thoughts: This was a super cute, quick read! I thought Lanie was a very relatable character (I also lost my mom when I was 10 years old), and I am a sucker for love stories set in NYC. I loved the chemistry between Lanie and Noah – I wouldn’t call this an enemies-to-lovers romance, but the banter was fun, and even though I saw the “surprise” coming, it was still very satisfying. There are some really fun side characters, particularly Lanie’s grandmother BD.
My only complaint is that the story felt a little rushed at times, including the ending. I would have loved an epilogue! Still, I really enjoyed Lanie and Noah’s story, and would recommend it to anyone who likes sweet (no spice) romances with a mistaken identity trope and fun characters!
Lanie works at a romance publishing house. Her favorite author, and one of the biggest for the company, is Noa Calloway. Noa's first book became Lanie's Bible for determining the 99 things she looked for in her future husband, and she found him. When Lanie's supervisor decides not to come back from her maternity leave, Lanie steps up into her place and that includes working directly with Noa. Despite years of communicating via email, Lanie and Noa have never spoken or met. When Lanie finally meets her idol, Noa is not what she was expecting. Now that Lanie is responsible for ensuring Noa's next book gets done, Lanie has to work closely with Noa help get them through writers block to write the next beautiful romance book. But the secret that had been kept from Lanie for so long has made her not trust her favorite author.
This book was billed as an enemies to lovers romance. And it was a love story. I just don't think the enemies part was very accurate. Was there some tension between Lanie and Noa, sure. But it wasn't the type that builds incredible tension page by page. It was more annoyance and frustration. It was a cute read, but going in with the expectation of an enemies to lovers trope took away from the story a bit when it didn't quite meet expectations.
Have you ever experienced a book that you read it and when you finish it your heart is full and even though you know how it ends you want to re-read it again because you just adored the characters and their story? Well, that exact feeling is that By Any Other Name gives. 😂
We are introduced to Lanie, a romance editor who loves her job and her fiancé who met every single one of her nintey-nine items her list for a perfect partner. This list was complied after reading her first Noa Calloway novel. Lanie's editing position is with the publishing house that discovered and works exclusively with Noa Calloway. Unfortunately for Lanie, Noa Calloway is behind on delivering her newest novel and the deadline is looming. Through a turn of events, Lanie is tasked with the important job of pulling the next great piece of romantic literature from the mind and heart of Noa Calloway. If she does this, she will keep the promotion she's always dreamed of!
If you love...
... New York, this book is for you!
... adorable date-like situations that just make your heart squeeze from the preciousness of it all, this book is for you.
... seeing characters develop into their own and find someone who brings out the best in them, this book is for you.
... an ending that might could possibly bring tears to your eyes in while you're in the bathtub wanting to savor every word {not that I would know from experience 😂}, this book is for you.

To start, this book was super predictable. But I think that's what made it the most amazing. While you knew the direction the book was going, it was still a beautiful love story that made my eyes tear up and my heart squeeze in my chest.
Lanie Bloom gets the opportunity of a lifetime to become the editor for THE Noa Calloway when Lanie's mentor, and current Noa editor, decides to not return from maternity leave. This is Lanie's big break- newly engaged and looking to put her mark on the publishing world, Lanie has dreamed of this the past 7 years of her career. She might also be Noa Calloway's biggest fan, as the author is what convinced Lanie to change the direction of her career and go into publishing to begin with. The catch? Her job is provisional, with the caveat that in order to keep it, she MUST get Noa Calloway out of writer's block. But when Lanie discovers that things aren't exactly what they appear, she's forced to decide what direction she wants things to go. And that direction leads her to unexpected experiences, love, and decisions that will change the trajectory of her life forever.
I've read A LOT of romances (as many of us reviewers have) as well as many that take place in NYC. For me it never gets old because I love NYC. By Any Other Name definitely reads like a true romance- greater proportion of serious to comedic moments, great cast of supporting friends and family, a meet-cute. The writing style reminded me a bit of Rebecca Searle or Emily Giffin (early writings) and, more recently, reminiscent of the writing of Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren; soft and elegant, the words flowed beautifully across the page and it was tough to put down.
This story is described as an enemies-to-lovers but, I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate. Sure, there are moments that a few characters are at odds with each other, but enemies to lovers implies that the characters have been against each other in some sort of competition or heated disagreement for a while when that's not necessarily true. While this is the best trope to describe it, I will say if you are expecting a TRUE enemies to lovers story, this one isn't really it.
if I had to make one critique of the book, it's that it wasn't long enough. I was drawn in into Lanie's story from the get-go, and while I understood why it ended there, I wish there was more.
Great first step into the word of Adult Romance from a traditionally YA fantasy romance and I honestly hope Lauren Kate continues because I will read whatever she puts out.
This was a sweet read. There seems to be a huge influx of literary-focused rom-coms right now so I was a bit hesitant to take on yet another within such a short period of time. But this was unique and fun! The storyline was fun and I love when a story comes full circle with an awe-inspiring moment at the end!
If you enjoyed Between the Margins, I’m sure you will also love this one!
This book was so cute and I enjoyed it. I flew through this super quick. I’m realizing that I enjoy the enemies to lovers trope.
Lanie seens to have it all. She is engaged to the perfect guy who has everything on her list. She has a booming career as a romance editor, and she gets to check perhaps the biggest items off her wish list; to work with bug tine author and inspiration Noa Callaway.
If she can cure his writers block she can secure her promotion. Sounds simple right? What could go wrong? Noa is hiding a secret and this secret will shatter Lanies’s world.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Have you ever finished a book with a big sappy grin on your face because it was just that sweet and that good? Yep, that was me, just having finished it with that same grin.
This was a sweet and wonderful romance with wonderful characters, and even more wonderful supporting cast (every book needs to have an irreverant grandmother who talks about where she her children were conceived as though discussing the weather).
I don't think I'm alone when I say that one of my favorite things is to read a book about books. We get a look into the editorial world in this one, as well as getting to know a romance author and their many published works.
There were so many wonderful surprises in this book, that I don't want to say too much and be the one to spoil them, but I loved everything abot this one. If you are looking for a sweet romance with lots of fun along the way, this is the book for you!
Thanks so much to Penguin Group Putnam for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!

My mother liked overachievers. And she seemed to be asking, with her final words, for me to overachieve in love. But how? When your mom dies and you are young, the worst part is that you know there's all this stuff you'll need to know, and now who's going to teach it to you?
It wasn't until college that I was introduced to the writer who would teach me about love: Noa Callaway.
✍️ One Sentence Synopsis: Editor Lanie Bloom lands a new client-- her long-time favorite romance author Noa Callaway, whom she's been communicating with over email for 7 years but never met-- and her life is turned upside down when she learns Noa is not at all what she expected.
💭 Overall Thoughts: This was a very cute romance, with some tropes that warmed my heart! I loved some of the deeper themes, but I wish there was more of it. I also think the marketing of this book as "enemies-to-lovers" does it more harm than good, as this isn't what Lania and Noa are at all. If you shed any expectations of seeing that trope before going into this, you'll enjoy it much more!
What I Liked:
👍 The Romance: I loved the softness of this romance, and the friendship they formed beforehand. Their email exchanges were hilarious, and I loved that somehow they were friends despite Lanie not knowing who Noa truly was. If anything, it was almost a type of boy-obsessed trope.
👍 The Overall Plot: I liked the whole concept of Lanie trying to shake Noa's writer's block by creating a "list". It made for some really cute scenes, and I loved when things finally ~clicked~.
What I Didn’t Like:
👎 The Pacing: I thought this could have done better, and I personally dislike when romance books end when the characters just finally get together, without actually showing them together. It feels like you're reading with no real payoff in the end, and was disappointing.
👎 Marketed Trope: As I mentioned, this book absolutely should not be marketed as enemies-to-lovers. Whoever wrote this in the description should be fired. It's deceptive and will only leave readers feeling disappointed.

Hello Bookish Friends!
What would you do if your favorite author was not who you thought they were?
This book is so heartwarming! Full disclosure, you may tear up by the end of the book. At risk of spoiling the plot, my opening question is one the main character, Lanie, faces in the beginning of the story. Lanie is an upbeat book editor who loves to read romance. She has everything, the perfect boyfriend, the perfect pet (a turtle), and the *almost* perfect job. Noa Callaway is the author that made her fall in love with romance novels. In the beginning of the story she is tasked with getting Noa Callaway out of her writer's block. Lanie’s boss will promote her contingent on Lanie getting Noa to get the next book finished. Noa is facing some personal issues that have impacted her ability to finish the next book. If Lanie can get the next book by its deadline, she will finally have everything she wants. But when she learns more about Noa, she finds that all of their emails and texts have been building a relationship based on one *semi true* fact. Before I spoil too much, let me get to my thoughts.
Lanie wanted to make sure Noa could finish the book. Noa wanted to get to know Lanie. This is the main plot of the book. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I was disappointed by a few things.
My enjoyment of the book came from the character’s themselves. Each is a bookworm in their own right, and I love that in the story. Edward and Elizabeth are the characters in Noa’s novel, and honestly I would read that book in a heartbeat. As a fellow bookworm I think this is truly a love story for finding yourself. Lanie reads all these romances and treats them as a guide to life. She finds a man who meets her 99 requirements for the perfect boyfriend/ fiance. To be honest I didn’t find this part of the book super relevant to the plot. It almost felt like it was tedious and slow until we got to the main book couple. I wish Lanie had broken up with him before the book started, so we could see more of her growth. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I was disappointed by a few things.
I was a little let down due in part to the pacing. I think I understand why Lauren Kate chose to write like this, but I could be wrong. The story that Noa Callaway was writing in the story was told backwards, and I think the main love story in this book was also told in reverse. In a way, they hate each other in the beginning and like each other by the end, which mirrors Lanie’s failed relationship with her ex fiance. While I enjoyed figuring this out, I wish I had a dual POV between Lanie and Noah. Their story was much stronger when they started interacting regularly.
The best thing about the book: the character of Lanie’s grandma BD. As someone who is really close to her grandma, I appreciated a strong relationship between grandma and granddaughter. BD was brash and loud and unapologetically honest. She was also Lanie’s biggest cheerleader when it comes to love. I was cheering for BD’s pep talk chapters.
Overall, I was obsessed with this story, but I wish the pacing was faster.
