It’s always fun to read about the book world, especially about romance books and this was such a joy to read!
Lanie Bloom is a romance book lover, who has a perfect fiancé and is working as an assistant editor for the best selling romance author Noa Callaway. When a promotion opens up, she has the opportunity to work alongside her idol, Noa, who is notoriously private and whose identity is a secret to everyone. But when she finally meets Noa, her idol is nothing like she expected, and she begins questioning everything she thought she knew about love, including if she’s really found it with her fiancé. As she navigates this, she also has to help with Noa’s writers block and deliver a new (and very late) manuscript that will determine if Lanie gets her promotion.
Lanie is such a fun and relatable character. She really wants her own happily ever after and after reading her first Noa Callaway book, she thinks she knows what she’s looking for. I was always rooting for Lanie and wanted her to get that promotion and her HEA!
The romance between our MCs was a slow burn but super adorable nonetheless. Though it’s marketed as an enemies to lovers, the dislike is only really one sided, and it does not last very long before they start developing a friendship. Even so, I love the dynamic that the two develop, having previously gotten to semi-know each other through email, now they have to do so in person.
I truly loved our hero. He was awkward at times, but always paid attention to detail, which was something I loved. I would have loved to have gotten to know him more with a dual POV, as there was so much we could have explored about his character.
Additionally, even though it was a slow burn, I was hoping for a little more development of their relationship, as it did feel a bit rushed at the end. I loved that they developed a sort of friendship first, but they had very limited time together afterward.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book and thought it was adorable. I enjoyed the book-writing storyline and loved the ending!
I did a little happy dance when I received this book as an ARC thru Net Galley.
I'm a huge fan of the Fallen series, I enjoyed the story, characters and writing so much.
This book was no different.
*spoilers*
First of all, the book setting is in New York, that alone scores major points. Then, the Lanie's attention to little details around her is something I could relate. The list thing was a little repetitive and annoying but it goes with her stereotypical type A personality.
The characters are all quirky but fit the story very well. The grandma is a whole other game as a character!!!
I love when books portray the lessons we can learn from other generations and the treasured relationships to nurture.
The romance, slow burn, banter, inside jokes and chemistry between Noa and Lanie is top notch. Its impossible not to fall in love with Noa.
I took one star because even though I loved this book and already preordered my copy, I didn't find something to pick it apart from its genre/book type.
This book put a big smile on my face. It was a nice reminder that there are many ways to get to know someone and the labels we put on ourselves don’t really matter. Such a relatable heroine and adorable hero (who understands romance! Win!) I look forward to this releasing soon!
Content Warning: Death of Parent
There is so much I loved about this book and I kind of went into reading this one forgetting about the synopsis.
Lanie is a great character and we see her in her element as an editor at a publishing house. She’s given a chance to be promoted but there are conditions that involve getting her favorite author, Noa Calloway, to submit her next book. But Lanie finds out Noa isn’t who she and all Noa’s fans, thinks she is. It is a case of mistaken identity. Noa is Noah. I found Lanie well-rounded and fleshed out. She’s smart, clumsy, ambitious, has the perfect boyfriend and loves her job. We even get to know some of her family history and we get to know her coworkers, some of which are her best friends.
Speaking of friends and family, I love Meg and Rufus, who are there for Lanie when she hits a rough patch in her love life. And Lanie’s grandmother, BD, is the best! She is so funny.
The romance that builds between Lanie and Noah is a slow-burn that starts off on the wrong foot but I wouldn’t call it enemies to lovers. They get along very well once they start to spend time with one another. I loved how the romanced progressed until the very end, and honestly I never wanted the story to come to an end! The whole thing tied into beautifully with the story Noah was writing and I loved how Lanie and Noah actually corresponded for years before meeting.
Some issues I had with it – Lanie is engaged for a good 30% of the book! And it’s not that I hated her fiance or anything, I actually liked seeing that Lanie had everything yet not even that made her happy. I thought it was important to the story, but I wanted more time with Lanie and Noah together. As I kept reading, I kept checking how far in I was into the book because their time in the book was way too short for me. I didn’t want the story to end even if it was such a good ending. And we only get one kiss, that’s it – it’s a perfect kiss though.
FINAL THOUGHTS::
Why you should read it:
*an editor and author falling for one another, publishing house drama
*Meg, Rufus and BD are so much fun
*Lanie and Noah’s romance is so heartfelt and came full circle – I didn’t want it to end
Why you might not want to read it:
*book is too short, I wanted more of Lanie and Noah
*I didn’t realize it was pegged as an enemies to lovers romance, there is a small hint of it and maybe it could have been dragged out (if the book was longer!)
My Thoughts:
I needed this wonderful story to be longer. I can see this as a movie because it’s set in NYC and Lanie and Noah go around to certain places to get his inspiration revved up for his book. I can already imagine it and it would be magical. This one gave me lots of feels, especially the ending and I never wanted it to end.
This delightful romantic comedy has the best love story and the most appealing characters of any I've read in a while. The female protagonist, Lanie, is an editor for a small press that publishes her favorite romance author, the glamorous but reclusive Noa Callaway. Lanie and Noa have had a long-standing friendly relationship via email for a few years when Lanie is put in charge of getting Noa to send in the first draft of her new novel, which is way past the deadline. When Lanie and Noa finally meet in person a train of events is set in motion that not only leads to romance for Lanie, but also a rediscovery of her city, New York, and the reimagining of her life and career. I found the characters to be funny and endearing and the setting made the story a lot of fun to read. The way that Lanie navigates a crisis of conscience as she endeavors to be honest with readers while remaining sensitive to her author added interest to the story, and the romance was sweet and believable in its development. This is a well-written light read with a lot of heart.
I'm a big fan of books where the story involves writers, publishers, and so on. I've always been drawn to them and I've certainly read some wonderful ones in the last. By Any Other Name is another one to add to the top of my list. I loved that Lauren Kate explored more than an author/editor relationship and the writing process,
The main character Lanie Bloom, works as an editor where she gets to work with her favorite author and world-renowned author Noa Callaway. It's someone she has idolized for years, however, she's never seen or met her in person. In fact, only one person has, the editorial director. When the Editorial Director leaves, and Lanie is promoted, it becomes her job to chase down the next Noa Callaway manuscript that is months overdue.
And from there, the story really begins.
I completely adored this book. It's sweet, it's charming, the characters are wonderful, and it was a quick, light read. Perfect for a cold January day.
4.5/5 stars
Thank you NetGalley, Penguin and G.P. Putnam for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I read this book all in one day. It’s immediately engaging and so fun. The characters were well fleshed out and the side characters really added to the world in a way I appreciated. I felt like they were actual people with lives and not just characters that only existed so the main characters would have someone to talk to. It’s marketed as enemies -to- lovers; I think the dynamic is really more like friends -to- enemies -to- lovers which is similar enough vibes but not quite as much angst as one might expect. I love books about books and book lovers and that’s the thing that immediately drew me to request this ARC in the first place. I felt it really lived up to my expectations in that regard and it added an extra level of enjoyment.
This book is not full of twists and turns. There wasn’t really anything about the plot or the characters that surprised me and I saw the curveballs coming pretty far in advance but, I personally, don’t really need that from a romance. I was just happy to be along for the ride. I think this book would particularly appeal to fans of Emily Henry or anyone looking for a swoon-y, but low steam read. I’ve already recommended it to my mom and my sister and I’ll definitely be picking up a finished copy come March!
I received this modern day romance from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book from start to finish was hooked. The chemistry between Noah and Lamie was great and I loved the exploration of publishing industry and the various settings that had meaning to the couple. The idea of a story within a story was great too. Recommend this fun, light, heartfelt read!
By Any Other Name is a charming and enjoyable read.
Readers follow along as Lanie, an editor of romance novels, accepts a promotion to editorial director and an exciting opportunity to work more closely with her favorite author, Noa Callaway. Noa is notoriously secretive and difficult to work with and the draft of her highly anticipated novel is four months late. Can Lanie help Noa overcome her writer’s block in order to save her job?
I would classify it more as (women’s) fiction than romance. The beginning of the novel set the story up as an enemies-to-lovers romance (one of my favorite tropes!) but the enemy aspect never really materialized between Lanie and her love interest.
One minor gripe is that a breakup early in the novel seemed contrived rather than true to the characters as they were originally introduced.
I recommend this to anyone looking to read a sweet, mostly predicable, story!
Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for the opportunity to read this novel.
I absolutely adored this book! This book is purely self discovery on both main characters and I devoured this book in a matter of 2 days! I do wish you get a little more romance between Lanie and Noah but overall, I loved how this book still gave me butterfly feels! I can not wait to have the physical copy in hand to re read! 4/5⭐️
I am always a sucker for enemies to lovers! This was such a good story. It was shorter than I thought it would be, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. By Any Other Name is exactly the type of book that you pick up, expecting just another cute rom-com, but it’s so much more than that! So grateful I got an ARC of this one.
Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒
By Any Other Name by Lauren Kate is a book about books, that has a lovely romance and is a feel-good book that I just loved.
Laine has a successful career as an editor for romance books and is engaged to be married to a man who meets all of her list of 99 traits for a successful mate. Then she is given a provisional promotion to editorial director, but in order to get the promotion permanently, she must get their biggest selling author, Noa Calloway, to send in her next manuscript, which is already four months late.
Noa is Lanie’s favorite author, and the reason she became an editor. However, Noa is a recluse, and nobody has met her in person. In fact, Lanie has only corresponded with Noa via email and has never met her in pers. But with the provisional promotion, Laine becomes Noa’s main editor, and she’s granted a meeting with her in order to help her overcome her writer’s block. But nothing is as it seems as Laine tries to save her job and get Noa to write her book.
As I said before, I just loved this enemies to lovers romance. I enjoyed the look inside a publishing house, as well as what an editor’s life is like. The romance between Laine and Noah was a slow burn, but lovely too. This is one of my favorite tropes, where they were corresponding for years without ever meeting, and then falling in love in person. There is plenty of flirty banter and some laugh-out-loud moments, but mostly this book is about Laine and Noah, and their romance.
The author’s love of New York City was also evident in this book, Laine and Noah explored little hidden gems in the city and it was fun to explore the city through their eyes. Their love of the city turned to love for each other.
I have one minor issue with the book and, it’s the cover. I don’t believe the cover is a good representation of the book. Yes, it’s a romcom, and it’s a fun book to read, but it’s mostly a book about love, and this cover just doesn’t represent the book very well. (this did not affect my review)
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I could read a million books set in the publishing industry. There is something so meta about the setting that it makes me feel all warm and cozy inside! Can't wait to get a paper copy of this book when it comes out!
Lanie has to work with her agency’s star author in order to get the authors newest sensation published and to get her promotion. It turns out this author (Lanie’s personal hero) isn’t exactly as portrayed.
This is such a sweet novel! Just when I started to wish for more interaction between the MCs it began to happen. I wish we were able to learn more about Noah and his personality, as well as watch Noah and Lanie’s friendship develop, but I loved the detail in the final chapter about how they met.
I adored this book! It was really more of a love story than a romance, but I loved the writing, the setting, and the characters. This "enemies" to lovers story is warm and full of heart. It deals with some serious issues, but also has plenty of lighter moments, and I was full of happy tears by the end. Thanks to Netgalley and Putnam for the advance digital copy.
Summary: Lanie loves love which is good because she works as an assistant editor for the biggest name in the Romance novel Noa Callaway. Noa Callaway’s novels are what drew Lanie to become an editor and she follows the rules of the romance author’s books like a creed so when she is promoted to Nao’s sole editor she is thrilled to work with the hermit and diva herself until she finally meets the author in person and realizes Nao is not a fabulous middle-aged women Noa Callaway is Noah Ross a 34-year-old white man, an attractive man to be sure but that doesn't matter because Lanie is engaged Noah is a diva and is four-month past his deadline with writer's block. So with Lanie’s Promotion riding on Noah’s next book, the two set out into New York City to find inspiration for his next book.
Thoughts: Adorable! This is super cute I adore both Noah and Lanie the two of them together were super precious. Noah’s backstory was a 10/10 I love how he grew up and that he had a bunny and precious apartment. I Noah gets a 10/10 I like that he didn’t have any conflict with Lanie apart from the misgendering issue and I love that he wanted to be able to write under his name and how he handle the situation, as far as grand gestures go his gets a 10/10 too. As he should as a romance writer. I adored Lanie and her little friend group as well, I do think she was a tad dramatic about the misgendering so I'm glad she gets over it quickly. Even her Fiance I liked him but I m glad there was no love triangle. This book is super cute and exceeded my expectations! it makes me want to go to NYC and get brunch and get a romantic boyfriend of my own!
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel! The characters are likeable and I love how the relationship develops. Honestly would have given 5 stars, but I felt like the ending came too fast and was abrupt. I was left wanting more!
I already know I’m going to be begging my friends to read this book when it comes out! Lanie is a editor at a popular publishing company and has been recently promoted. She is so excited to take over with one of her favorite authors….. until she finally meets that author. Meeting this author makes her reevaluate all of her decisions from her adult life and decide if they were the right choices for her. Lanie finally decides to make choices for HERSELF and I loved that. The ending felt a little rushed but overall it was a fun read that kept me on my toes.
I've been a fan of Lauren Kate's YA series for years and was excited to get the chance to read her newest adult romance. And what a delightful, fun, sweet romance it is! Lanie is an editor at a romance publishing company who finds herself tasked with getting the newest novel by their best selling author up and running. When secrets are revealed, Lanie has to re-think seven years of friendship and help find some inspiration for her author, while finding inspiration for herself. I really enjoyed the story and loved the way the novel was woven in. It was a light and fun read with some heart and depth and exactly want I wanted to read in a cold and blustery day. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you to @netgalley @putnambooks and @laurenkatebooks for this eARC in exchange of my honest review.
Lanie has it all - she’s engaged to her dream man, she’s a successful romance editor, and she’s got amazing friends. That is, until she finds out who her favorite writer - the mysterious Noa Callaway - truly is. Her discovery makes her question her life choices and sends her on an adventure of self-discovery.
I read this book in one second. It was funny, sweet, and really well written. It’s definitely your typical romance, but one that will keep you entertained!
This one gets 4⭐️’s from me!
