There was a peculiar side to this book, You Again, by Nick Spalding, that somewhat rubbed me the wrong way. I believe it was the familiarity with which the characters spoke to the reader and to the other characters without my feeling as though I knew them well enough for this quirky behavior. Unfortunately, most of the main characters are not extremely likable people, until the end where their emotions and humanness resonate more clearly. In my opinion, the way Mr. Spalding had his characters speaking in asides to the audience did not have the effect that he may have hoped for. I’m quite certain this format was created by the author to help engage his readers, but for me it had the opposite effect. Nonetheless, this book has some endearing qualities and I’m most appreciative to NetGalley for the eCopy.
THIS BOOK was laugh out loud hilarious. I was reading it at night before I went to bed and I had to stop giggling since I was shaking the bed and thought I was going to wake up my partner. I adore Nick Spalding's books to begin with and this one was absolutely no exception. He is such a vivid author that I can see all of the scenes happening in my head. I just really enjoy his books-there's no other way to say it! This book follows our main characters in alternating perspectives, which I loved. Our main characters are each other's exes and they end up on the same island with their new partners. The hilarity that ensues is so wonderful. I really liked this book. If you want to laugh, pick it up.
Thank you so much to Amazon Publishing UK for kindly sending me an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
When I read the synopsis of You again? I was convinced that the book was a romance novel and that it would have an enemies-to-lovers with a second chance trope (which I love by the way), so I requested it because I love everything the synopsis was promising me. And I was pretty sure I'd love it, but I didn't. Don't get me wrong, the book is ok as it is, but what pissed me off was that the synopsis made me SO excited to read a love story and that's not what I found. I just couldn't help but think that whoever wrote the synopsis lied to my face to coerce me into requesting a book I wouldn't have requested if I hadn't been lied to (I came across You Again? on NetGalley in the romance section… why???).
Many times the pranks they played on each other went too far and were so unbelievable that they weren't funny, actually made me sick several times, because the characters acted like children in so many scenes that I forgot they were in their thirties. Also, the ending is predictable and not surprising at all.
So, if you’re looking for a good enemies to lovers romance novel with a second chance filled with pranks and laughs and a good couple to and to fall in love with STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK! (If that's what you're looking for, you might find it on You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle). But if you’re looking for a non-romance book with an ex-spouse reunion to finally settle their differences, even if only after so many conflicts along the way, You again? is the right book for you.
I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 because it's not the book I requested, or at least it's not what I thought I requested and this confusion did not allow me to like the book as it is, but I think that if the synopsis was true to the book I could have had way more fun with it.
I will be honest I was expecting a bit more humor from this book. While it does have some great scenes that made me laugh. It did not maybe get me to laugh as much as a Sophia Kinsella book normally would, and I love British humor. That being said it still was a fun fast read. I do feel for Amy and Joel, for everything they went through with their marriage, and then everything they dealt with on their island vacation. I think my favorite part of this book was that each character got to have a moment where they realized that the history they had built for their past together maybe was not as traumatic as they previously thought, and that they were able to grow and come to realizations about the past and themselves. By doing so they were able to grow as individuals. Thank you so much Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this title.
The idea behind this book is fun; it features enemies to lovers, a tropical holiday to the Maldives and lighthearted banter - all things that are right up my alley in a rom-com-esque book.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t for me. I struggled with the characters and found them very petty and immature despite their ages. I didn’t connect with the story at all and found it fairly difficult to get into, especially as I didn’t warm up to anyone the more I read.
The pranks had the potential to be amusing and a highlight of the book, but I found them to be executed quite poorly, adding to the childish tone surrounding the main characters.
In saying this, there were definitely times that I genuinely laughed and I did enjoy some parts, but overall, I wouldn’t pick this book up again and I feel as though it is wrongly advertised as romance.
You Again? Is a book about a divorced couple that end up on a Maldivian Island that they honeymooned on, at the same time, with their new partners.
Joel and his ex wife Amy didn’t end things in good terms so being stuck on the island together is far from ideal and they spend their stay trying to wind each other up. It was a good, easy read but I found it difficult to stay focussed. It was generally fairly uneventful and I found myself skimming paragraphs to get to the end. Usually a Nick Spalding fan, this isn’t one I’d recommend.
I really like Spalding’s style of writing and sense of humour having read quite a few of his books and so I was excited when my Netgalley request for ‘You Again?’ was accepted. The story switches between Amy and Joel’s point of view, which I enjoyed as it allows the reader to find out more about the characters and get into their head a little. I definitely did not like Amy at the beginning but as the story progressed I warmed to her. But I really need to mention Ray, Amy’s fiancé, as he was by far the most likeable, insightful and mature character. I just loved him!
I can’t deny that ‘You Again?’ is extremely predictable but I don’t think it is meant to anything else. It is full of humour and is an easy and highly enjoyable read. Another triumph for Nick Spalding!
If this wasn't the perfect summer read I don't know that there ever will be one!
Who doesn't love an escape to an island, young love, flash forward to issues galore and then some drama back in paradise?
Grab your hat, a white claw and the sunscreen - you will be parked outside reading this one until you get to the very last page!
An easy read with some funny moments as two couples try to outdo each other in antagonising tricks. For me though, my enjoyment of the novel was marred by the liberal use of the f-word which I thought was unnecessary.
Amy and Joel have been divorced for more than two years, when they both return to their honeymoon location with their new partners. At the same time.
This book was very funny, it had me laughing at the utterly ridiculous situations the main characters found themselves in. It’s a book about love, heartbreak, forgiveness and letting go of the past. I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t my favourite and it had a lot to do with the main characters being kinda unlikeable, but I guess they were meant to come off that way. The plot twist was predictable, but I didn’t really mind it. I liked the ending though. I also wish this book was a lot more diverse.
Overall, this book was pretty good! 3/5 stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the eArc.
I loved this book! The plot was original and the dialogue was hilarious. The thoughts that were going on in the minds of Joel and Amy were funny and down to earth, something that I can imagine myself thinking in the same situation. I am sure there are plenty of us who have had the misfortune to run into our ex while with our new significant others. Now, imagine that situation on a very small, remote island where you are all signed up for the same events. Add in some left over anger over a misunderstanding and you have an explosive situation. While I guessed who the bad guy/girl was early on, it did nothing to detract from the story. I have never been to the Maldives, but enjoyed the descriptions of the scenery and the parts with the sea cow. Not to mention a few of the "revenge" episodes.
I love love love this author!!! I makes me laugh out loud so much. And this book did not disappoint. Can't wait for this to come out on audible.
I have really enjoyed this author in the past, but this book was not my favorite. There were moments that were very funny and I loved the descriptions of the setting, but I quickly lost patience with Joel and Amy. They were work partners and then married, but when it ended badly neither one truly got over it. When they find themselves, along with their new significant others on vacation at the same resort they behave worse than junior high school children playing pranks on one another. I couldn’t help wondering what it would have been like to be a guest on the island at the same time. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
Eight years on from their perfect honeymoon Joel and Amy are back in the Maldives, but this time with different people. Both remembering the amazing time they had the first time around, they have returned to recreate the magic with their new partners. Little do they know that they have chosen the same week. Stuck together on a tiny island the exes can't avoid each other, and sparks are sure to fly.
I've read a few Nick Spalding books now and they're always guaranteed to be a cheerful read with a few laughs along the way.
I was a bit unsure about this one early in the book, mainly because I found both Amy and Joel to be so incredibly childish. They did both grow on me as the book progressed though, and the humour helps along the way.
The plotline is as you'd expect, it's a light-hearted and funny, and doesn't have a hidden agenda. It definitely made me smile, and ven chuckle out loud in places. I did see the end coming but I don't think it affected my enjoyment of the book.
This is one I'd say is worth picking up as a beach or holiday read, where you're looking for something entertaining and easy to read.
I DNF’d this book after reading about 45%. I had to stop after I suffered through an entire chapter about the girl pooing herself on the side of a pier. Why was that necessary? I didn’t find it funny at all, and not really great plot lines for what I was hoping to be a fun, romantic comedy. I wasn’t really enjoying the book before, the characters were annoying, but that chapter just solidified it for me. The only thing I did like about this book was the setting. Sorry, I appreciate the ARC, but this one just wasn’t for me.
This book is so funny! I thoroughly enjoyed it! I found myself smiling and laughing out loud so many times.
Highly recommended!
Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for letting me review this book.
I really wanted to like this as I thought it had everything I could want - ex lovers, a dream location setting, and lots of pranks and jokes throughout the book. However, it was a struggle to get through this book. Our main characters were so unlikeable and immature and after 50%, the book got boring and predictable.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review
There is something comforting about picking up a book from a particular author and getting exactly what you were expecting. Nick Spalding is guaranteed belly laughs, cringeworthy moments, and at least one extremely embarrassing poo situation, all played out with characters you can relate to and that experience great personal growth as the story progresses.
We meet Amy and Joel two years after a horridly bitter divorce. They are both headed to the magical island where they honeymooned, only now they're both with someone new. It's a study in annoyance and bad choices that makes for incredibly entertaining reading with a side of emotional growth and personal insight. And it has a very surprising twist at the end that came out of nowhere but turned out to make the book even better.
Really can't recommend this one enough. It's a quick, fun read that will not disappoint.
Many happy thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the entertaining early read!
This book's biggest downfall was the immaturity of the main characters and being advertised as a romance book. I picked this book up thinking it was going to be a second chance romance that was going to be a mix of You Deserve Each Other and The Unhoneymooners. I even came across it on NetGalley in the romance section. The summary suggests it will be a romance. But boy was I wrong.
This book is about a divorced couple who find themselves on vacation at the same time with their new significant others at the same spot they had gone for their honeymoon 6 years prior. In order to get on each other's nerve, both end up finding themselves in the middle of prank war as if they were 2 year olds.
Don't get me wrong, I think a good prank war can build chemistry and propel the story. But pranks in books have to be done very well for me to enjoy them. They were done very, very poorly in this book. The reason the prank war begins is because the heroine and the hero's bungalows end up being next to each other, the heroine decides to move to another bungalow. Once she gets there, she realizes she can't see the sunset she as she had dreamed about. So she blames it on the hero. The next day, she sabotages his massage session and tells the massage lady to give him a deep tissue massage instead of the relaxing massage he requests for. Their immature prank war starts from there. They proceed to act like children on a vacation they could have easily ignored each other on.
That wasn't the limit to their immaturity. You know in middle school, there was that weird, toxic "couple" that were super mushy gushy and then broke up because one of them didn't show up on time to hold hands around the courtyard, and then for the rest of middle school those two would call each other names and go out of their way to be mean to each other and act like children? That was this couple. They behaved like literal children. Right off the bat, the hero and heroine were calling each other names, causing fights in public, constantly being super passive aggressive in their minds, letting their negative vibe take over their entire day, doing these "comical" bits where they would hide behind plants or underneath tables to avoid each other like this is some early 2000s disney channel movie, etc. The worst part? Their divorce could have easily been solved by communication and maturity, which neither of them possessed. If I am being honest, I did not want them to end up together because they were so immature and had zero chemistry. I felt bad for the guy who ends up with the heroine, he was way to understanding and mature for her.
I was super creeped out by how the hero's new girlfriend was 10+ years younger than him and he was consistenlty being described as old and wrinkly with a receding hairline or something like that. He would also mention how he can't wait to see his girlfriend in tiny clothing in the weirdest way. Don't get me wrong, I am not against an age gap romance, especially with a dilf or a nice guy with a dad bod. I am in no way trying to body shame or age shame the hero. (One of my favorite heroes, Martin from Olivia Dade's Teach Me is an average looking man with a dad bod in his 40s. So looks and age aren't an issue). The way they were described made me envision a slimy, subpar white male with a bitchy, milf-wannabe girl. Their dynamic was so off putting. Don't even get me started on the girlfriend. It was very evident from the way she talked and behaved that she was significantly younger than him. In age gap romances, I need maturity from both parties. The worst part? The young girlfriend was secretly sabatoging the hero and heroine's relationship the whole time. I mean, really? I am so tired of the "bitchy younger girlfriend" stereotype. If the hero and heroine would have just communicated then they could have resolved their issues.
I just can't with this book. I normally don't get this upset over a book, but I did not like it at all. But I am an advocate for writing holistic reviews, to try and find the best in every book. So I guess I will say this, the book does do a good job of being an "anti-romance" I guess. Despite the divorced couple being the hero and heroine, just because they were married once does not mean they have to end up together. It does a good job of showing how to identify when you really aren't made for a person and how to let yourself be ok with that and find happiness elsewhere. That is, honestly, an extremely valuable lesson to learn.
I wish this book gets better marketed so it doesn't end up in the hands of someone expecting a romance because of the way it was advertised.
I do thank Amazon Publishing, Nick Spalding, and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion, but this book is a pass for me.

I can’t believe I have never read any of this author books before now! I absolutely read this book in one day it was hilarious! This divorced couple of two years end up back at the Maldives island where they had honeymooned six years prior with different beings. Joel and his ex wife Amy used to be the power couple of the real estate firm that they worked for until and accidental slip on the time calendar! They missed a huge sale of a mansion due to wrong time on calendar. This was the breakdown of the marriage because they each blamed each other for the timing. Joel is still with the same firm and now dating the owner’s granddaughter. Amy has a hot new athletic fiancée! He sells boats for a living and Amy now works for him. They run into each other at the airport then of course at the resort. I laughed so hard about the massage and spaghetti incident that I couldn’t wait to see what happened next! If you want a great funny read this is the book for you!
I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
