Sometimes Apples Never Fall bogs down but then it picks itself up and speeds off at a rapid pace. The family is interesting and the predicament quite puzzling, keeping you guessing until the end.
What a whirlwind trip this book takes you on. In the beginning, I didn’t really like any of the characters, but as the story progressed, I understood why they acted the way they did. Each character comes to life so masterfully. I laughed and cried and enjoyed the ride.
I love Liane Moriarty, but this was not my favorite. I was engrossed in the mystery of where was Joy and who was the mystery woman, but that was about. The characters here were just not likeable, they wer very frustrating at times. And that pandemic chapter?? Why? Love this narrator.
I was a bit disappointed with this book. It took about 3/4 of the story to finally draw me in. The last quarter had enough plot twists to keep me entertained. Not sure I really enjoyed the ending with the COVID timeline as it seemed just thrown in. I will read this one with my book club, so I appreciate your advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
The family drama is typical Liane Moriarity. I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling . The sibling relationships are complex . The twist to resolve the story is fabulous.
I wasn't crazy about the narrator's voice and inflection in this audiobook. I'll give it another try, but I found that I just was not very motivated to continue listening. I think this could have been due to the fact that I did not feel very connected to any of the characters, I didn't care for the narrator, or that I could not follow the story closely enough. The length also made it a daunting listen.
This wasn’t one of my favorite Moriarty books. The ending was wonderful, but the buildup took forever. I kept wanting to bring out my red editor’s pencil and make it move more quickly. The story line was not complex. When Joy, a 70-year-ld mother of four goes missing, the police are called in and Stan, her husband, may be arrested for her murder. What Moriarty does well in the book is showing the complex family issues between siblings and parents. Caroline Lee is an excellent narrator. She had Joy’s voice down perfectly.
The narrator was great and I worried that I’d struggle with her accent but it wasn’t a problem in the slightest. The story was VERY hard to follow as an audiobook. I might have enjoyed it more if I’d read it rather than listened.
This book was more about the journey and not the destination! It's been a minute since I read Liane Moriarty so I kind of forgot that. I thought this book was way longer than it needed to be and the narrator was a bit whiny — didn't love the listening experience and I think it really slowed me down getting through it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the audio version of this book.
Enjoyed having it read by an excellent narrator.
What a splendid book! Caroline Lee is an excellent narrator! Great accent, brings Australia to life but doesn't distract. I was totally captivated by the characters and the mystery. Delighted with the wrap up! Splendid insight on a prickly situation. I really could not wait to get back to this book. It was long, but not long enough. I would have loved to follow these fine folks on the rest of their journeys. Great writing excellently delivered! After just finishing Vanity Fair I was thrilled to find a book so absorbing. I'm sorry that it is finished. Highly recommend it to lovers of Lianne Moriarity, Jodi Picoult and Kate Morton. My thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for providing an advance listening copy in exchange for my honest review. This is my honest opinion. This is one of the best books I've read this year.
Liane Moriarty is hit and miss for me. I really liked the ending but felt like the build up just drug on and on.
Thank you NetGalley for an audio-ARC of Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty.
Apples Never Fall is the perfect combination of mystery and family drama. Liane Moriarty combines both genres seamlessly. I loved the use of a third party overhearing details of the Delaney's family conversations; a creative way to add to the plot. The characters were well-rounded and developed throughout the story. At the end, I learned about so many pieces to the mystery that I completely missed while reading! My biggest complaint with this book is the extra 2 hours of story after the resolution. This added information was unnecessary. It felt like the author just wanted to add a COVID pandemic element after the story was written.
Caroline Lee's voice worked well with a story set in Australia, but at times her accent seemed to be more New York or Boston rather than Australian. Her timing was comfortable, and her tone matched the character's feelings.
Another page turner from Liane Moriarty! Enjoyed the interactions between the Delanany children. It was a good listen. I will recommend.
I went into this book, not sure what to expect. Having read her Nine Perfect Strangers and thinking it was not her best work, I was hoping this would be better. It was definitely, better much better. It follows a family who's mother/wife goes missing. It is lighthearted and I actually chuckled while reading it.
I am excited each time I see a new book is coming out by Liane Moriarty. They are such fun and surprising reads and the audio versions are just as great. The narrator is amazing and really brings the book to life. Apples Never Fall is another win for Moriarty. It took me just a bit longer to get into this one, but then I was totally engrossed. This title is a bit different, as it is focused more around a family with adult children and it was such a well-written read about family dynamics, long-buried feelings, and family understanding. A great ending with lots of surprises and twists throughout, solidifies this as another great title by Liane Moriarty. I'm ready for the next one!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this advanced audio copy.
Apples Never Fall had me flipping pages as fast as I could. I never really knew how the ending was going to turn out and loved meeting all of the Delaney family members and seeing how they interacted with each other. The thing Lianne Moriarty is best at is characterization, and that really shines through in her latest novel. 4 stars!
Liane Moriarty's books are addictive, and this one is no exception. Funny, but in a caustic way (which is my favorite way), with so many family secrets that made me gasp out loud. I listened to the audio-galleys (audio-ARC? whatever it's called), and the narrator did a great job of playing up the humor. Having said that, her voice so reminded me of an old teacher who was really mean to me that it was hard for me to get over it and enjoy it. Obviously, that's an extremely personal peculiarity, so I hesitated to even mention it here, except that it was a good reminder that we all have things like that--bizarre, individual preferences and experiences that color not only the way we perceive a particular story, but the medium and circumstances through which we take in that story. It's a good reminder to myself as a reader to consider those factors when I'm reviewing a book, and it's an even better reminder to myself as a writer to consider them when I'm reading reviews of my own work.
I have always been a fan of Liane Moriarity's books and as soon as I saw that she was releasing a new book I had to read it. This book was good, but not great. I think for such a long book the pacing was done very well. But overall the book was 150 pages too long. It took me about 50% of the book in to really be invested and the mystery we were all waiting to be solved fell flat. It didn't really feel like anything happened.
Overall, I liked this book and finished it because I love the author and her work. Despite the negatives, I did enjoy the experience of listening to this story.
I loved the book, and I love the audiobook! The characters are so complex and I had no idea what would happen next. I look forward to more from Moriarty!
