Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of The New Neighbor.
I've read previous books by the author and the premise was intriguing so I was looking forward to this.
Sadly, it didn't meet my expectations for a number of reasons, starting with:
1. Marlowe. He gave me a weird vibe from the first page. And not in a good way. He goes by his last name, which is fine, but he's no Mulder and Scully. I have no idea why he goes by his last name. Is it because he think it makes him sound cool? How millennial of him.
He spouts off mumbo jumbo about how he gets vibes from the house, that he's meant to be there, which is never explained. The first of many loose ends never explained.
2. He's a bad parent/father. He downplays his childrens' fears of the house being creepy and unsettling because he's convinced he belongs in this house. Anyone else get The Shining vibes besides dear old dad?
He is similar to Jack Torrance; he's got a drinking problem; he ignores his children and their fears, he's fixated on the house and the vibes it gives him.
3. Second loose end: what happened to the previous occupants of this creepy house? Never fully explained.
This felt like filler the author added to pad the book.
4. Maya was a decent character, but sort of one dimensional. She's Marlow's lawyer, hired to help him properly invest his winnings so he doesn't end up bankrupt like so many lottery winners. Still, their rapport wasn't genuine, forced, to be a conduit for the feelings Marlowe suddenly has for her after the sudden loss of his wife. This so common literary device I could have done without.
5. The ending was very anti-climatic, as some reviewers have already noted, and a bit hard to suspend disbelief especially when Bo enters the scene. I had a hard time digesting that.
6. The writing was good, and the chapters were short so the narrative mostly flew by, yet at the same time, it dragged,
7. There was too much filler about the Yates' disappearances, the son-in-law, the flirty daughter, all of these characters really didn't add much to Marlow's predicament.
Some people might enjoy this, but I didn't like it as much as I had hoped.
I really didn’t like this one. I couldn’t connect with the narrative voice - it felt forced and fake to me. The story seemed ridiculous right off the bat - I just really struggled to believe his wife died and he won the lottery in a span of a week
Aidan Marlowe has lost his wife and the mother of his children. On the day of her funeral he gets some very unexpected news. He has won the lottery and will be in a financial situation that he and the kids can start over in a new town and leave their past behind. Or so they think! After purchasing a large home in Bury, New Hampshire, they find out that someone is watching them and knows many personal details about them. Who is this stalker and why are they harassing Aidan’s family?
This is the first book that I have read by Carter Wilson. I liked this storyline! The lottery win was a nice, unique spin that I have not seen in any other thriller books so far. The story was engaging and kept me guessing from start to finish. I would highly recommend THE NEW NEIGHBOR to all thriller fans!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This review will be posted to my Instagram Blog (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the near future.
I always love the uniqueness to Wilson's books and they keep me turning the pages quickly! This was another one that did not disappoint!
This book was different, in a good way. The story intrigued me and had some interesting twists and turns. A single dad wins the lottery in the day his wife is buried …what follows is an intense, dark novel with plenty of surprises and interesting characters. A good read for a rainy day when you can curl up with a blanket and really get into a book.
“The New Neighbor” written by Carter Wilson, is a very fast paced psychological thriller! On the day of his beloved wife’s funeral, Aiden Marlowe finds out that he has won the lottery. In efforts of making a fresh start, he and his two young children move away from home into a mansion. Soon, mysterious and threatening letters begin to arrive at their house. As Marlowe begins to investigate, he becomes increasingly unstable, blinded by paranoia and grief, leading to having lapses in his memory.
I really enjoyed this thriller. I did not know who to suspect! I had some ideas and was proven wrong over and over! I love when a thriller keeps you guessing. The characters were also very enjoyable and I loved the pieces of Irish culture that is entwined. Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book!
aidan wins the powerball lottery on the day his wife dies, he has been playing the same numbers for years, it is the best and worst day for him. He and his children move to a new place and they can have anything they want. he starts to realize someone is watching them, some scary scenes, but a great book.
The New Neighbor
A Thriller
by Carter Wilson
Aidan holds the winning Powerball numbers.
Is today the best day of his life... or the worst?
Aidan Marlowe is the superstitious type—he's been playing the same lottery numbers for fifteen years, never hitting the jackpot. Until now. On the day of his wife's funeral.
Aidan struggles to cope with these two sudden extremes: instant wealth beyond his imagination, and the loss of the only woman he's ever loved, the mother of his twin children. But the money gives him and his kids options they didn't have before. They can leave everything behind. They can start a new life in a new town. So they do.
But a huge new house and all the money in the world can't replace what they've lost, and it's not long before Aidan realizes he's merely trading old demons for new ones. Because someone is watching him and his family very closely. Someone who knows exactly who they are, where they've come from, and what they're trying to hide. Someone who will stop at nothing to get what they want...
I received an advance copy for my honest opinion. Thank you to NetGalley and Carter Wilson. With that said, it was a good book. Not great. It did not seem thriller I just did not find it easy to get through. Slow, I am sure many, many people disagree.
This was a great book, sometimes difficult to read at all the stuff Marlowe gets into, but overall a very good read, very believable. A thoroughly twisting plot. It makes you wonder what you would do if you won the lottery and would it be worth it? Do the choices we make define us?
We all wonder about the new neighbor when they move in. But do you do some online to do some sleuthing to find out the background of them? Well poor Alex is not sure who but someone knows an awful lot about him and his family and want a little slice of the life he has been able to carve out for him and his children. Reeling from the death of his wife but his winning of millions he moves to a new quiet town in order for them to start fresh. But sometimes we can be our own worst enemy.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle by Poisoned Pen Press and #NetGalley for my honest opinion. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
You’ll have a chills running down your spine while you read. Thrills, twists and twists. Spellbinding mysteries abound!
Definitely a downright horrifying novel!
It has suspense, mystery, mental health issues, family, death, and at the very end - Hair-Raising Fear as you read the last 15 percent of this book!
I honestly screamed out loud during the last chapters. It was that intense!
I won't retell this family's trauma-- But Know This-- You will be absorbing this novel quickly!
I loved the shorter chapters. It gave me time to reflect on the horrors before moving to the next page.
Anyone who loves psychological suspense will surely love this one!
Thank you to NetGalley and #poisenedpenpress for my lack of sleep!
I love a suspenseful domestic thriller. Unreliable. Lucky yet unlucky. Aidens wife dies and he wins the lottery and buys a mansion for him and his twins. Then the threats come…
Thank you for providing me a free copy of #WeLiveNextDoor #NetGalley for my honest review.
I was hooked from the first page to the last page, a great psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist!
I'm looking forward to reading more by author Carter Wilson.
5 STARS
Wow what a rollercoaster of suspense! This is my first book by this author and I love his writing style. Wilson creates characters you’ll fall in love with and weaves a mystery you won’t forget.
Domestic Thriller with twists - Aidan Marlowe is both lucky and not. Following his wife's death he wins the lottery and takes his tens of millions of dollars to a mansion in Bury, New Hampshire. Once there, he and his twin 7 year olds begin to receive threatening letters unsigned.
Aidan isn't sure where to turn but asks for help from his lawyer, the police chief and finally his dad. The suspense builds as more and more
I give this 3.5 starts... I love the premise and love the beginning but so much just didn't tie in. Even the title doesn't makes a lot of sense unless Aidan is a neighbor to someone else? Some of the details seemed superfluous at best like his Irish roots and the personalities of the twins who remained somewhat unfinished in personality. It was good, but it wasn't great.
Still, it was suspenseful and twisty and you will not guess the end. If you like a domestic thriller starting a male hero, this is for you!
I was able to read an ARC of this book (coming out in April 2022!) and flew through it. I love a good neighborhood mystery, and it was a nice change to have a paranoid, unreliable male narrator instead of the usual unstable female. The chapters were all short and ended with cliffhangers, making it impossible to stop reading. I didn't love the main character and the ending was pretty anticlimactic, leaving me with several unanswered questions, but overall a good read that I couldn't put down. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this one early!
Suspenseful. Short chapters making you want to read the next chapter.
Our main character is an unreliable narrator. Our author also mentions this in his notes at the end of the book. In the middle of the book, you wonder how much of this is supernatural, with ghosts and other woo-woo factors.
The ending, ah, that explains some of our questions. But one big mystery wasn’t really solved, or was it?
Thanks to Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for letting me read this book.
This is an intense and well written thriller. It delves into some difficult topics such as mental health, death and loneliness.
At times, I struggled with this book and it took me longer to read than usual.
Overall, it’s an enjoyable read.
I feel pretty bad saying this book wasn’t for me. Apparently it’s a very well known author. I just couldn’t get on either the main character as he just didn’t ring true and I couldn’t identify at all. Sorry not for me. It is well written. It is pacy. Just not my style.
