Another book about a girls trip that goes wrong. Nope played out Trope. This was slow and i ended up DNF'ing after about 75 pages.
I just think this is so played out
I absolutely love me a good mystery novel, so when I read the blurb for this novel on Netgalley I thought I had found the perfect match! However, I have to admit my high level of anticipation was quite let down. This novel had all the right ingredients for an amazing mystery novel, but I feel like it was just a lot of running around in circles (literally) and unnecessary back and forth between the "wild girls". Also, I do not think these girls were as wild as the author would lead you to believe. Overall, I would recommend this a decent slow burning novel to anyone who enjoys a good mystery read.
I would like to thank the author, Netgalley, and William and Morrow Custom House Publishing for providing me with the opportunity to receive an advanced reader's copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review!
This is a new to me author and I have to say I am looking forward to reading more by this author! I loved this book
I chose to listen to the audiobook of The Wild Girls by Phoebe Morgan and I am so glad I did. The story jumps between four friends as they embark on a trip to Botswana to celebrate ones birthday, but haven’t been around or talked to each other for years and ended on a bit of a negative vibe.
Each character was extremely interesting and had their own set of personal problems they were constantly thinking about. I loved how Morgan showed us each characters back story so we understood their choices and behaviors a bit, but the big reveal of why they all stopped talking years before kept us in suspense. While the story jumped around a bit, which got me mixed up a few times while I tried to remember which person went with which story, in the end I was able to work it out and enjoyed hearing from each perspective. I feel like it added to the story where they all had very different thoughts on what was happening and what they should do.
My one complaint, and I wouldn’t call it a big complaint, was that we never got any answers about the cheating husband. Let’s all be real, Chris was obviously cheating after we “saw” on the facetime video the wine glasses in the back. It was like he got no consequences what-so-ever and we received no closure on that story line. How frustrating that was for me as the reader. Now this was not enough to drop my score of this story low, but that mixed with the jumping, did bring it to a four. However that still makes it in the top books I have read in 2022.
If you love twisty suspense novels with lots of characters who could easily be the prime suspect, The Wild Girls is for you! Keeps you guessing until the end.
The four “wild girls” Grace, Felicity, Alice, and Hannah, haven’t been together since a horrible night two years before until Felicity invites the on an all-expenses paid trip to a luxury safari lodge in Botswana. When they arrive Felicity is no where to be found. They are isolated and eerie things start to happen. The narrative alternates between Grace, Alice, and Hannah and gradually the events of the past night are revealed. The book is fast-moving and I kept reading to find out what happened in the past and in their I’ll-fated stay in Botswana. However, having experienced a safari in Botswana, I was looking forward to local color that would give impressions of the wildlife and people of Botswana, but that was totally lacking. The novel could have been set anywhere. Also, the ending was disappointing and improbable.
Thank you to the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book! I loved it! The setting was just unique and creepy enough to set the stage for murder. I thought I had it all figured out by the beginning of Part 3, thinking I knew what was happening all along. Boy, was I wrong! I love the creepy twist at the end. I wish life hadn’t gotten so busy and made me so behind in my reading. This would’ve been a great summer read!
📖My Thoughts📖
This was a very interesting book. The book started out kind of slow, but once we got to the location of the trip, it really started to take off. There were a couple things that I didn’t seem so realistic, but they were minor things so it didn’t take too much away from the story. The story is done in three parts, the first starting at present day, the second a flashback to two years prior, then returning to present day for the third and final part, and is also told from multiple points of view. I am a little disappointed that there was a decent portion of the book that took place in Botswana but didn’t really play much off of that at all. Overall it was a pretty gripping suspenseful psychological thriller that I enjoyed.
Thank you Netgalley, William Morrow and Phoebe Morgan for the opportunity to read and review this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved the setting of this book! Exotic locations are my favorite in thriller novels and was so excited for one of my favorite places in the world to be used as the backdrop for this one. Unfortunately, I do feel like the setting was a bit wasted here. I love stories where the setting is used almost as a character of it's own and I didn't feel that way with this one. Overall, a fun and quick suspense story. 3.5 stars
Best friends: Grace, Felicity, Alice, and Hannah had a falling out a couple of years ago. Then, out of the blue, Felicity invites them all to an all expenses paid weekend in Botswana to celebrate her birthday. Reluctantly, they all decide to go - hoping to put the past behind them and rekindle their friendship.
After arriving at the lodge, they all start to question if they made the right decision to come. There's no sign of their host, other guests, and no phone signal. They are all on their own, questioning each other, when things begin to go very wrong.
I wish certain things would have 'flowed' better between the past and present with more explanation of certain things that had happened. However, it was a very enjoyable 'whodunit' with a surprise twist at the end.
Thank you to Scene of the Crime, NetGalley, William Morrow, and Phoebe Morgan for the ARC of this book.
What would you do when you get an invitation to go to Botswanan with 3 of your best friends you haven't seen in 2 years..everything paid for? You wouldn't pass it up right? It should be a weekend of catching up and trying to become best friends again. Instead it's a weekend they didn't expect. This free trip isn't what it's cracked up to be.
What a wild ride that was. When I thought I had it figured out, I didn't. I really liked the different POVs and the flashbacks. It helped create a sense of what was going on. You got just enough information to keep the book interesting. Grace drove me nuts most of the time, but I couldn't help but root for her.
This was my first book from the author and it won't be my last. She did such an excellent job of writing this book. Each character was written so well and different from the others.
This one just didn't do it for me and unfortunately I can't even really explain why - the characters, the setting, the plot? Honestly I don't know, I just know that I wasn't wild (no pun intended) about it.
The four friends Grace, Felicity, Alice, and Hannah hadn’t been together for years. They were called the “Wild Girls,” when they were together as kids. They all have grown up and are doing things on their own.
Felicity invites them all to Botswana for a birthday bash weekend of a lifetime. It’s a chance to have fun and when the friends travel to reunite at a resort in Botswana find it deserted and the friend who gathered them all together no where to be found.
Shortly after arriving at the safari lodge, a feeling of unease settles over them. Things are strange and there is no sign of the party. Then they realize there is no phone signal and it is getting creepy.
I enjoyed this book very much and will probably look for more from this author.
This one is a wild ride. It is really creepy and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. The setting is a remote, luxury lodge in Botswana. Four friends plan a safari for a birthday celebration. Escaping their day-to-day lives sounds like an adventure but being alone in the wild is more than they bargained for. Can they even trust each other? Thank you NetGalley for the copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Four friends fell out of touch because of what happened one night. Their lives individually have changed in the years that have passed. One of them reaches out and invites the other three on a luxurious all-expense paid trip for her birthday. The girls are all excited to see one another and hope to fix their friendship but things are weird on the trip. When they get there they realize they have no phone service and are pretty much out in the middle of nowhere alone. What could go wrong right?
I enjoyed this book. It had some wild things happen and some intense situations. I really liked the authors writing style and how she developed her characters. I would definitely recommend this book to people. Thank you, NetGalley for the opportunity to read this.
The Wild Girls is a suspenseful locked-room mystery where four friends travel to reunite at a resort in Botswana only to find it deserted and the friend who gathered them all together no where to be found. This story creeped me out. It is one that will have you on the edge of your seat. Filled with tons of twists and turns, the suspense truly never lets up. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a locked-room mystery perfect for summer.
I really loved the premise for this book but of fell a little flat for me. I was looking for more action and excitement once they were in Botswana and it just never really happened.
I did love the character development and the eerie, atmospheric setting.
This is my first book I have had the pleasure to read by this author and it did not disappoint.
Four lifelong friends, up until a couple years before when they broke up for unknown reasons to the reader is coming back together to celebrate a thirtieth birthday in Africa! All expenses paid and they all decided to throw caution to the wind and jump on the plane to meet the birthday girl. Each one has different suites and nobody else appears to be on this all inclusive vacation. I enjoyed the now and then timelines as the story began to unravel and we began to see the real reason the band broke up.
Female friendships can be wonderful at one moment, but you must always be careful of a woman left scorn.
This was my first read by this author and it won’t be my last. It was filled with suspense and twists. I’m a sucker for the “remote location” trope in thrillers, so I really enjoyed the book. I thought it was fast paced and it keep me guessing and on my toes until the very end. Also I think this was the first thriller I’ve read that was set in Africa in a luxury safari lodge, which I thought was a clever setting.
A huge thank you to William Morrow Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Grace, Alice, Hannah and Felicity all grew up together and were the best friends until an incident tears them apart. The ladies are all living their separate lives when they receive a birthday party invitation from Felicity for a huge destination party in Africa.. While all the ladies are shocked they decide to go with hopes that they can rekindle their friendship. The ladies get to the destination, get settled and head out to find Felicity. As the ladies are waiting they receive a note that Felicity isn’t feeling well and will see them the next day. The ladies quickly realize they are the only people at the destination, and the location feels eerie. Soon weird things start happening, and the ladies realize they may be in danger, and everything comes back to the incident years ago.
This book was suspenseful, and definitely has some unsuspecting twists. This is a good read if you like psychological thrillers that keep you guessing until the end. Thank you Scene of the Crime and William Morrow for this ARC.
I really enjoyed this one. The Botswana setting was fun, but I would have loved to have seen more about the area or people.
