Once Upon a Tide is a Young Adult read that I hope becomes a series with other characters!

Lana is a headstrong mermaid who has counted down to her fourteenth birthday in order to start taking classes on how to rule. These plans are snapped short as her father, the sea king, demands her to attend the Royal festival. This time as an ambassador, Lana is set to spend her time and rush back home. Yet with issues spiraling out of control back home, this princess will have to learn how what it is like to be on Earth for longer than she bargained for.

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and will be picking it up for my classroom library. It was a fresh take on mermaids, both on land and person, that didn't involve overt inappropriate messaging. I hope my students will enjoy this as much as I did.

Being a mermaid princess never seems to be as easy as the movies make it out to be. This princess learns that running a kingdom takes not only leadership, but hearing all sides of the story. Only listening to one side can lead to a false understanding. Growing with her friends and learning to be a leader prevails in this coming of age book. It is a lighthearted read that will make you laugh as you turn the pages. I give this 4 stars and recommend it for a classroom reading book.

Kid-tested, Once Upon a Tide tells a well-received coming of age story in the context of growing up in the context of a mermaid/fantastical world. Universal themes including being recognized by parents as getting older, are addressed.

Cute fantasy novel for middle schoolers. I ordered it for my library! Who doesn't love a good mermaid tale? I feel like it's the Ariel adventure we've all wanted. It's a story of growing up and wanting to be a part of the decision making and trusting your instincts. I think it will have my middle schoolers intrigued. I hope Disney makes this into a movie.

This was a fun audiobook to listen to. I enjoyed the narrator and think she did a great job with all the voices. The story was a fun story that follows a young mermaid as she visits her mother....on land. It covers topics such as family issues, friendship, bullying, politics, and learning about who you are.

I love mermaid tales. I love this book even more because it's a mermaid tale that makes references to The Little Mermaid while being a story about a mermaid trying to come into her own as more than just a young princess. She's got quite a lot on her plate with her mom trying to remarry and her best friend causing things he didn't intend to, but she handles it all while putting bullies in their place.

This book had me confused.

I am a reading specialist for third and fourth grade students. Judging by its cover (I know, I know), I thought it would be perfect for my students. As I began listening I realized the protagonist is just about to celebrate her 14th birthday. Along with the narrator trying to sound like a young teenager, it just never gelled for me. It was a YA setup in MG clothing. I DNF.

I loved this audiobook. I would have listened to it straight through if my headphones didn’t run out of battery. I listened to it twice. Once by myself to hear the content and a second time with my kids. The kids loved it and really related with some of the parts (like making new friends in a new environment after being stuck at home for a year). We loved the entire book start to finish and the narrator was phenomenal. The only issue myself and the kids had were that there were often times where it felt like the adults just waved away bullying and there were zero consequences for those kids. However, despite this it still was an amazing book and taught amazing values at the same time. I would highly recommend the audiobook for adults and kids. See if you can find the Little Mermaid reference in the book?

Original story about Princess Lana who lives in the sea with her father, the king of Clarion, but also can visit her mother on land, who is a Queen. Lana only visits her mother once a year for the annual Royal Festival. She prefers life in the sea. This year, plans get thwarted by a number of events and Lana must use all her diplomatic skills to set things right.
Magic, staying true to yourself, royal life, politics.
