I really liked this book. It was full of heart and humor. I found myself chuckling about one thing or another every few pages. My favorite character was Mimi. I enjoyed the love she had for her step kids. I also admired her view on different things. I enjoyed the love between dad and kids and how much the siblings loved one another and showed their love. It is almost guaranteed that, any book I read from this author, I will adore and remember for a long time. Thank you NetGalley, publisher and author, for allowing me to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

The Party Crasher is about a family that has taken a turn for the disastrous, and a house farewell party that doesn’t quite go as planned. After divorce blindsides Effie, she is devastated at the state of her family. She feels they are shattered, broken, unable to be put back together. Her breaking point is when it is announced that her childhood home, Greenoaks, is being sold. To top it all off, Krista, her dad’s gold-digging and horrible girlfriend, sends her an anti-invitation to attend the farewell party. Realizing that she left behind a cherished item, Effie resolves to sneak into the party to get it back… but as she sneaks around, she overhears many conversations, and her world is turned upside down at all of the revelations and secrets.
This was a fairly quick read, and while the book keeps the mood mostly light-hearted, there are many serious and shocking moments as well. The writing was easy to read and follow, which, coupled with the constant reference to her being the baby of the family, made Effie feel a lot younger than she really is. There was a sense of immaturity in the beginning of the book; however, it wasn’t overpowering and even ended up dying down as the plot progressed. Effie clearly holds grudges, yet there was a big maturation going on throughout the novel. The plot wasn’t too outlandish, Anna there were certainly comedic moments that had perfect timing! The characters were all nicely fleshed out, and I felt a lot of connection with the family members (and Joe, but he basically counts as family, right?). The big things that didn’t make this five stars were the final revelations and reveals. Some things were a bit too concise, almost rushed by, while other things felt inserted and resolved at the last minute. That being said, I really enjoyed the journey and the ultimate ending was very fitting. A sweet 4.5 stars!
I could probably just copy and paste the same review for every Sophie Kinsella novel: Charming, witty, heartwarming, and delightful with an adorable main character. The Party Crasher is no exception. I adored Effie and her entire family. The premise seems so simple: a woman saddened by the sale of the home in which she grew up is desperate to say one last goodbye and resume possession of her precious Russian Dolls but is too stubborn and angry to accept an actual invitation from her stepmother, albeit a begrudging invitation, and so she crashes the party. Hilarity ensues while she hides in closets and under tables to avoid being seen, as well as a reunion with her ex-boyfriend and first love, who is now a reality tv sensation, also begrudgingly. I loved it and you will too!
If Sophie Kinsella writes it, I will read it. So of course I jumped at the chance to read her latest, The Party Crasher. Though nothing beats my love for the Shopaholic series, I find I tend to really enjoy all of Kinsella's standalones as well. This one was no exception. If you're fan of the genre (good rom-coms are not easy to come by) or Sophie Kinsella, this one is bound to entertain and help you escape the reality for a few hours.
Our main protagonist Effie finds herself struggling to accept her parents' divorce. As if that wasn't difficult enough, she loses her job and then finds out that her dad and his new girlfriend sold her beloved childhood home and are now throwing a "housing cooling" party. Of course Effie is no fan of the new girlfriend, the fact that drives a wedge between her and her dad. She is adamant about not attending the party despite all those closest to her trying to convince her that she will later regret it. Except there is something in the house that Effie really needs to get and sneaking in during the party seems like a good idea. What could possibly go wrong, right?
I really enjoyed reading about Effie's (mis)adventures and getting to know more about various guests at the party who are all in some way connected to Effie. This read had just the right amount of family drama, laughter, romance and of course those awkward, cringe worthy moments.
Grateful to NetGalley and Random House for giving me access to the advanced copy of this extremely enjoyable rom-com.
Not one of my favorites, and I struggled to even finish it. Thank you to Random House and Netgalley.
Party crasher
I had no idea a new book was coming out from Sophie Kinsella so was happy in getting to read an advanced copy of it thanks for NetGalley.
I usually enjoy the storylines but this one was so bland, it started grating on my nerves, as it reminds me of the Shopaholic series.
I did not feel for the main character who is just as impulsive and immature as Becky was in the Shopaholic series, which once you read one of the books in the series, they all sound the same that I began to lose interest.
The storyline centers around this house that the main character grew up at. The main character is grown up adult in her 20s, yet immature and based on her reactions, not dealing with her parents’ divorce. Her parents are selling this childhood home and she crashes the final party event to claim some childhood possessions. I cannot believe that the whole party event is where the story is centered around.
The story felt so disjointed and had a difficult time getting through it. With everything happening in the world was hoping this story would be a well enjoyed escape but felt very superficial.
This book was so fun and entertaining to read!
I'm a relatively new reader to Sophie Kinsella, I've only read one other book of hers before this but it was super different than The Party Crasher and I loved this one! It's unique and interesting and perfect for those who enjoy a family trope with a sprinkle of second chance romance added in...also those who live to gossip!
This book features your "fly on the wall" situation where Effie crashes her family party where she's uninvited to retrieve an heirloom but finds herself stumbling upon different memebers of her family having various conversations. Along the way, she makes new discoveries about them, finds out secrets, and basically hears everything from good to bad.
I really enjoyed this book, it was different but the whole out of sight aspect of the entirety of this book was really entertaining and enjoyable for a reader!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for an earc in return for an honest review.
Sophie Kinsella is an auto-read author to me, but as much as I wanted to love The Party Crasher, I unfortunately had to DNF it. I had a hard time getting into the book and finding the characters likeable enough to continue. Will I still read anything Kinsella writes? Of course, this o e wasn’t just a fit for me.
This was a delightful book. I laughed out loud several times. It was definitely a comedy of errors but also so heartwarming.
Sophie Kinsella always knocks it out of the park, but this one was even better than usual! It was completely hilarious, and I fell in love with Effie (the protagonist) and her chaotic, loveable family. I was sad when it was over because I just wished it was longer. Fingers crossed for a sequel!
Sneaking into her father's party, Effie wants to retrieve her childhood keepsakes before the house is sold. Effie's world crashed around her after her parent's divorce and she's struggling to pick up the pieces. When Effie is excluded from the 'house cooling or aka goodbye party, she vows not to give Krista, her father's significant other, the satisfaction of showing up where she's not wanted.
Instead, Effie becomes #ThePartyCrasher and her shenanigans while spying on her family are sprinkled in with Sophie Kinsella's warmth and wit. Can she restore her relationships or are they fractured beyond repair?
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for the early edition of #ThePartyCrasher in exchange for an honest review. As a fan of Kinsella's books, I eagerly awaited the read but I had trouble connecting to the character. That being said, once Effie was on the case, that's when I became immersed in the story.
What I enjoy about Kinsella's novels is that the protagonist is flawed but a lovable character. She is relatable, resourceful and realizes that through overcoming adversity, she emerges stronger than before.
Rating: 3.5
“The Party Crasher” was so much fun to read. It’s written in Sophie Kinsella’s signature light and airy style that ensures a happy ending and laughter by the reader throughout, while still giving her characters enough depth and
real-world issues to be relatable. I enjoyed “The Party Crasher” very much.
Effie Talbot’s life is fine - not perfect, as she still carries a torch for her ex and can’t seem to have any luck in love since she broke up with him, but fine. She goes to see her parents for Christmas, where they break the news that after decades together, they are getting divorced. A year and a half later, Effie’s childhood home is being sold and she’s “anti-invited” (sent a rude, begrudging invitation) to the farewell house-cooling party by her father’s new, obnoxious girlfriend. Effie has had a falling out with her father and doesn’t want to see him or his girlfriend and won’t attend the party, but realizes that the party is the perfect time to sneak into the house to collect a beloved item from her childhood, since her dad and his girlfriend will be preoccupied with their guests. Sneaking in and getting out was supposed to be a quick event, but things don’t go according to plan. Effie ends up hiding in different places throughout the party, hearing snippets of conversations and witnessing private moments, and she learns a lot about her parents, her siblings, her ex, and herself.
I give “The Party Crasher” four stars. It was a great feel-good read, like all of Sophie Kinsella’s books, with characters I was rooting for the whole way.
Really good book. It flowed quickly and was well written with believable characters. I look forward to reading more by this author
A new Sophie Kinsella book is cause for celebration. Read he Party Crasher to join the party this Fall.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Effie is unhappy when she learns her parents are getting a divorce. She dislikes her fathers new and younger girlfriend. Her ex boyfriend Joe comes back into her life at the right time. I liked this book.
I'm devastated because this is the first Sophie Kinsella book that I have not wanted to finish. I am a huge fan of her work, namely the Shopaholic series but this book was just too slow to get into. I did not feel compelled by the characters and just did not find it interesting in the least. I feel awful because I have loved her previous work. But, ultimately, this read just fell flat for me.
Another fun Sophie Kinsella book! I loved how it took place in one night and how it really was all about a family dynamic. Effie was a little hard to love at first because she was a little immature but she quickly learned and grew up.
This wasn't my favorite Sophie Kinsella book but it was still a cute, fun one!
Sophie Kinsella has a way of creating characters that are rich and flawed and this book contains many for you to fall in love with.
When Effie's family home is sold after her parent's abrupt divorce she opts out of the "house cooling" party her dad and his new girlfriend are throwing due to bad feelings. When she realizes she left something behind she decides to covertly show up and sneak in and out to retrieve it. In signature Kinsella style, Effie and her family and friends run into a variety of hilarious situations and she realizes that she may not know as much as she thought she did about them.
If you are looking for a book with laughter and a bit of romance this is an excellent option. Thank you to NetGalley for a prelease copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is a good quick read if you want something lighthearted on the weekend between fantasy novels. It was witty and I am not mad about it. Rom Com typically isn't my go to genre but I really enjoyed this
I follow Sophie Kinsella on social media so I was anticipating reading “Party Crasher.” With Delta hovering, I needed the light-hearted wit of Kinsella’s writing.
Effie has been struggling with her parents’ divorce for more than two years. Even worst, she does not get along with her father’s new paramour, Krista. Because of their (non)relationship, Effie swears she will never set foot in the family home. Hence, when she discovers that the house is being sold and that she was excluded from the home’s goodbye party, she is determined to crash the party and retrieve her childhood dolls. Of course, grabbing a few dolls is not as easy as it sounds and Effie is able to eavesdrop on a variety of conversations as secrets and surprises are revealed.
Like most of Kinsella’s characters, Effie is whimsical and her antics give you plenty of laugh out loud moments. I love any story of family dysfunction and for the most part, Kinsella manages to keep her characters from becoming caricatures. It’s not easy saying goodbye to a family home and Kinsella deals with the topic without overdoing on the sentimentality. At the same time, you are able to witness the Effie grow into her own. I wasn’t as keen with the more romantic aspects of the novel, but overall, I found this to be enjoyable tale full of both drama and humor.
Three and a half out of four stars.
Thank you the Sophia Kinsella, NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this novel.
