I definitely related to this main character , she was a little immature and deeply connected to her childhood and memories. I loved that this book was really about realizing your parents are imperfect people. This wasn’t necessarily a romance, it was very much a side plot. And this did drag for me a bit at the end. But very sweet novel about family. Reminded me of Bridget Jones
There are times that we wish we could be a fly on the wall at a party or an event. We'd love to hear the discussions without having to be a part of them. In Sophie Kinsella's latest novel, The Party Crasher, one woman ends up doing just that - but she doesn't love what she hears...

As always, Sophie Kinsella delivers the most delightful book! I have to see, being able to explore the house through Kinsella's words has been one of my favourite reading experiences of 2022. Yes, Effie and her siblings are very entertaining characters that I wanted to spend time with, I also loved the house- I think it was a stand out character on its own. I don't know how she does it, time and time again!
There is the Sophie Kinsella I know and love! A couple of her recent books have missed the mark for me, but this one brought me right back to why I love her!! It is so cleverly done to literally have pretty much the entire story take place in one evening’s party. She masterfully weaves the love and memories that occurred in a family that is now seemingly broken and a home that is being sold all throughout the book as Effie crashes a party at her childhood home. The last party that their family will have there before it is sold. And oh my word. She does it again with Joe. And sweet Bean. And Gus. Ugh, my heart. I just really enjoyed this one. Even more than I expected! It’s such a beautiful tribute to family and childhood and growing up and siblings and love.
What a hilariously adorable story! I enjoyed these characters and their journey. Sophie Kinsella is a must author for any reader that enjoys romantic comedies!
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Another fun Sophie Kinsella book, perfect for a day reading by the pool/beach. Light hearted and great way to escape for a few hours. Sophie Kinsella always delivers and this is no exception!
I was really hoping to like this book as I enjoy Sophie Kinsella novels. This just wasn't it for me unfortunately.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
A few years ago I fell out of love with Sophie Kinsella. I didn't enjoy reading about incapable women. This book may be the book that beings me back to her. It was pretty funny and serious all at the same time. Overall a good read and enough for me to try another Kinsella book.
Effie's parents dropped the bombshell news of their divorce during Christmas, something which Effie and her siblings never truly came to terms with. Two years later, Effie's dad is living with his young girlfriend Krista, who has changed him in many ways. Having declared open war on each other, Effie and Krista continue to fight bitterly until Krista gains the upper hand with the announcement of the impending sale of Effie's beloved childhood home. Krista also announces a "house cooling" party for friends and family to say their goodbyes to the old home, and withholds an invitation for Effie. Effie, using the excuse of looking for a favorite childhood toy, sneaks into the house and eavesdrops on the guests from various hiding places. She finds out there is more going on with Krista and her father than she knew about.
Effie is a trademark Kinsella character: quirky, stubborn, and impulsive, but very very real in her emotions and reactions. I loved the unique premise of the story and how nothing was really what Effie thought it was, even though there were things that were wrong and a bit of swindling going on. Funny read, but with an undercurrent of seriousness that makes you -as an adult- think of your parents in a different light.
I absolutely loved this book! I found it hard to put down. I highly recommend reading it! You won’t be disappointed.
Couldn’t fall in love with the writing style, it was a fine story but entirely forgettable, Effie was a cute character with little depth.
he Party Crasher was a fun read and trust to Sophie Kinsella style. Krista believes she's in a tightknit family and nothing can change them. Until change happens and family secrets are revealed. It's not a sad and depressing story about loss, just a real life look at funny, family drama.
The Party Crasher is the type of Sophie Kinsella novel I enjoy- awkward heroine who is dealing with a dysfunctional life but has unlikely supporters along the way. Effie is in turmoil- her parents split up and now her dad and his awful girlfriend are selling the family home. To make matters worse, they are throwing a party and Effie isn't invited! When Effie realizes her beloved Russian dolls are still in the house, she decides to crash the party. I feel like this book is an example of the Kinsella I love= the characters make sense and I really cared about them. This is why I keep giving her a chance, even when I don't like the books as much. When Sophie Kinsella is good, she's one of my favorites.
I have always greatly enjoyed works by Sophie Kinsella and I am very pleased to say that "The Party Crasher" was no different. It was a quick, enjoyable read.
really enjoyed this book by Sophie. Would read more of her books. Loved this very much. Total recommend this to all.
Thanks netgalley and publisher for this book.
Reading a book by Sophie Kinsella is like getting together with an old friend. I used to check her books out from the library in highschool and college. Love them so much. You always know what you’re going to get. The Party Crasher was hilarious and heartwarming. I’m sad to leave Greenoaks, too.
Sophia Kinsella is synonymous with an entertaining and humorous read. And she has done it again with "The Party Crasher."
Effie is having a difficult time with her parents divorce. To make matters worse, her dad and his new girfriend have decided to sell the family home. When they throw a goodbye party (or house cooling party), madness ensues. As with every Kinsella book I have read, I giggled at Effie's antics and the push and pull family dynamics.
Party Crasher is a quick read spanning only over the course of a few days. Yes, there's a bit of family dysfunction within its pages, but truly don't all families have a bit of chaos, mishaps and humor? This is what Kinsella does best.
Many thanks to Sophia Kinsella, Random House and NetGalley for a feel good father daughter story. If you love Kinsella's books then this is another great read for you. If you have not checked out her work (and why havent you) then this is a good book to pick up!
Thank you to NetGalley, The Dial Press, & Random House for the opportunity to read and review this book before it's publication date! This in no way affected my review, opinions are my own.
First things first - I loved this book 😍 😍 😍
Second things second - For me, Sophie Kinsella is hit or miss and there doesn't seem to be any in between. Sometimes she knocks it out of the park, and sometimes I'm kind of left wondering if the book I read is the same author that wrote I've Got Your Number or My Not So Perfect Life (wins!) because what in the world did I even just read?? (See: The Wedding Night)
The Party Crasher was total magic and I am so glad that I refuse to give up on Kinsella because if I had, I wouldn't have had the experience of reading this book in less than 24 hours while grinning like a loon, laughing out loud repeatedly, and even tearing up once or twice. This. Was. Magic.
I loved the antics of the main character, Effie, and as ridiculous as they seemed, it also felt TOTALLY plausible. I 100% believed this woman would go crawling around the front lawn hiding in rose bushes to sneak into her childhood home so she could retrieve a beloved childhood trinket before the sale of the house following the divorce of her parents and the arrival of a new (not so nice) woman in her dad's life.I believed in the relationships (even as some were ridiculous) between the characters. I believed in the romance. I BELIEVED, y'all!
I also loved the nuanced conflicts in the book - they was so many shades of gray involved in all of them, and it made for a very realistic (albeit at times silly) portrayal of life. Nobody was perfect, nobody was all bad or all good, and everyone made mistakes. It didn't feel dysfunctional as much as it just felt, well, real.
Couldn't recommend this one highly enough, y'all. Honestly considering re-reading it at the end of the year just for the heck of it!
I thought this was a cute book, not my favorite by this author. But I did enjoy reading it! I enjoyed the characters in this book, and I found it to be a fun read. It’s a quick and easy read. I would recommend checking it out!
Over two years ago, Effie's parents got divorced. Shortly afterwards, her father took up with Krista a much younger woman who Effie called a gold digger. She has been estranged from her father since. Now, they have sold the family home and Effie is devastated. When Krista decides to throw a party to say goodbye to the house, Effie's siblings, Bean & Gus, are invited, but she is not. When her father asks Krista if she invited Effie, she sends her an anti-invitation that Effie shares with her sister, but refuses to attend. Sneaking into the house to retrieve a treasure that she hid in the house, she overhears many conversations that opens her eyes to secrets and issues that have been going on in the family. Can they finally open up and be honest with one another to become a real family once again.
This was a fun story, just what I expect from Sophie Kinsella, but with some serious issues. Effie was not a very likeable character as this story begins. I thought she was selfish and self-centered, but as the story went on, I began to like her more. We learn a lot about things that happened to make her so cynical. Sophie Kinsella is wonderful about taking a theme and making it humorous. This book does that, with the actions and situations that occur while Effie is sneaking around the house during the party. Effie of course is a quintessential Kinsella character and while she’s a bit immature and bubbleheaded she is what makes this book! There is also a bit of romance, with Effie coming face to face with her ex that she never got over. As she learns more and more about her family, being a fly on the wall, Effie rethinks everything she’s thought she knew about her family, and confronts with everyone to see everything from wider vision. With a family feud, secrets, miscommunication, relationships, and romance, The Party Crasher is a story of hope and reconciliation. Being a huge Sophie Kinsella fan, I enjoyed this story, but it was a bit different from other books she has written, but I still recommend this one.
