I was skeptical of a middle grade novel with a 12 year old hiding a gun. I did really enjoy the story, especially the pieces that can be understood across time (this being historical) of family expectations and finding your voice to communicate your needs and interests. The inclusion of the LA Riots surrounding the Rodney King verdict is also a fantastic tie in for kids interested in social justice, human rights, and protests, especially current knowledge about BLM and standing with the AAPI community. It is also very fast paced, taking place over just the first day of the riots. I would recommend it to slightly older readers in grades 5 or 6 though 9 and I appreciate the inclusion of information about gun safety and emergency safety as well.
