Loved this. It was a nice easy read; finished it within a day. Good storyline, kept me turning the pages.
A "creeping up on you" psychological thriller that you can't stop reading, and you have no clue where this story will take you. This well-written book has a refreshing perspective, and you end up thinking anyone could be behind this. How is it possible that one woman can have so many weird and creepy people in her life? Everything seems great in the beginning when a lovely couple moves in to their lovely new house. Lots of weird things happen quite quickly, and there is most definitely something strange with the upstairs neighbours.
The story gets creepier and weirder in a steady way which makes it impossible to put down. It has many twists and turns, but they are believable, and makes you really feel for the protagonist. No one seems to believe her, and she no longer knows what to do, whom to trust. This book will stay with me for awhile, because it went under my skin. Only a skillful writer can make that happen. A wonderfully creepy book that many people will enjoy reading!
A couple moves into a new home in a new neighborhood hoping for a fresh start. At first, things seem to be going well, but then the sideways glances and whispers begin. It would appear that the move has been a big mistake, maybe even a deadly one. A tightly plotted domestic thriller
I thoroughly enjoyed The Couple Upstairs. Compared to other thrillers that I have read recently, it wasn't as predictable, and I found myself needing to keep reading chapter after chapter. I enjoyed having Nina as the 'unreliable' narrator, and, while as the reader, I knew someone was sabotaging Nina, it wasn't obvious who or why. The flashback chapters were also well-done. I would definitely recommend The Couple Upstairs to anyone looking for a page-turning thriller.
A very good stand alone psychological thriller by author Shalini Boland. I read this novel very quickly due to the suspense built up by the author. Good characters and a fast suspenseful plot.
Zac and Nina have moved into a new home and are hoping to leave their past behind. But its not long before they start to have doubts about their home and the dream is starting to feel like a nightmare. Chris and Vanessa live upstairs and Nina hears constant arguing with Chris appearing to bully and manipulate his pregnant partner Vanessa. Other things are also going wrong and Zac and Nina are also arguing a lot and their relationship appears to be seriously at risk.
Quick paced plot with lots of suspense make this an excellent read.
I would like to thank both Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Nina and her boyfriend Zac are just moving into a flat that they have purchased. They have been together five years and feel the time is right to stop renting and put down some roots for the future. Zac is self-employed as a plumber and Nina has her own fashion business funded by a local entrepreneur who has a manager James who keeps an eye on things. On moving in the neighbours all appear friendly. The couple upstairs Chris and Vanessa appear with a bottle and cake to welcome Nina and Zac. The next day both of them are unwell and wonder if it's a bug going around or something that they ate. Nina hears Chris frequently shouting and what sounds like furniture moving however Vanessa is very quiet and says very little and won’t be drawn.Nina holds a product party to further her business and when the lights go out and a broken switch is found, she wonders if someone is against her. Alternate chapters tell of a child, we know not who, that lost their father quite young and then finding reassurance in a friend called Adam.
As ever with Shalini’s books I found myself oblivious to real life and turning and turning and turning. To me the sign of a very skilled and talented writer that can hold the reader within the pages and keep them there. An air of tension and twists and just as you think you might have a clue- bang! and there's another twist in the opposite direction.
A brilliant , stunner of a read with a warning- real life may get in the way!

Fast paced psychological thriller. I read this over one weekend. It was so good that I could hardly put it down. Each chapter is told from the perspective of different characters.
In The Couple Upstairs we meet two couples: Zac and Nina and Chris and Vanessa. The couples live in the same house separated by apartments. Chris and Vanessa live upstairs with a separate entry on the side of the house. Zac and Nina live downstairs.
Nina converted the outdoor shed into an office. With the help of an investor Nina was able to start her own online fashion store working from home. She’s quite proud of how successful her business has grown in a short amount of time.
After a few weeks some peculiar things start happening to Nina. Someone is trying to sabotage her business. Everything begins to escalate. As Nina tries to figure out who the culprit is more and more characters are plausible suspects. Every possible reason is explained leaving the reader to question who it really is.
Shalini Boland sets the scene by introducing the neighbors in the neighborhood paying particular attention to the couple upstairs. As the story builds the reader gets a sense that the couple upstairs are unusual.
The strangest and most puzzling piece of the story is when Shalini includes chapters referenced as “then”. Nothings made clear in these chapters in the beginning. It’s not until the end that all is explained.
The story held a steady pace. Shalini created plenty of activity. My mind was reeling with so many possibilities it was difficult to ascertain what was going to happen next especially with all the unexpected twists and turns. I was definitely entertained from start to finish. The story was easy to read and easy to follow. It was a character driven story focusing mainly on the two couples.
The entire time I was reading I was making notes highlighting sections that I thought were important aspects of the story. I had no idea which direction this story was headed, but that didn’t stop me from reading. Sure we know the book title The Couple Upstairs but I didn’t want to fall into that trick. I wanted to sort through all the hints Shalini dropped. I was so way off the mark. Shalini blew my mind. I had no idea what was happening or why.
Shalini Boland began publishing psychological thrillers in 2016. I’ve read up on each release. The Couple Upstairs is her 13th psychological thriller. She averages two books a year. She’s a USA bestselling author.
One common theme in her books is the location. Shalini lives in Dorset, England. The setting of her books tend to be places near Dorset, England. Shalini’s writing style and language is typical of a person living in England so you’ll find common words used in the British language.
Wow! Crazy characters! Crazy people! Crazy storyline! Lol this book was definitely an interesting read! It plotted along nicely, had suspense, intrigue, action, and a few twists and turns !! It went in a totally different direction than I thought it was going! It was definitely an enjoyable read! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I enjoyed this book and found it really easy to get into but there were a few bits that knocked the mark down from a 5 to a 4, e.g. Nina rang her Mum from her office then shortly after was complaining about having left her phone in the flat. I would like to read another one of Shalini’s books though.
Oh Wow A chilling Psychological Thriller from this amazing author.
15A Mistletoe lane, in Friars Cliff, Dorset a new flat for couple Zac Ainsworth and Nina Davenport, It's just perfect, a self employed plumber and working from home as a online fashion store business that she renames Mistletoe lane, this is a new start for the couple and a next step.
Upstairs in 15B are couple Chris and Vanessa Jackson at five months pregnant they find her a bit quiet but Chris makes up for the two and welcomes them both.
With Nina been home a lot she starts to hear a lot of banging and arguing from them that is getting a bit disturbing and she makes out Chris as been a bully then it gets worse and starts during the night with furnisher moving.
Their housewarming party goes well we all the new neighbours including Chris and Vanessa but there is still nothing right with them upstairs, things start to go terribly wrong for Zak and Nina and they argue is their relationship about to be screwed up, can they survive?
this is one harrowing gripped up story to get your head into, I loved it, so much action happening that will shake and make you shiver reading. Superb writing from the author.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for another incredible, fast paced read from Shalini Boland. She’s one of my favorite authors and my heart always does a hop skip when she has another book out. The Couple Upstairs was what you would expect from her writing, twisted, full of “who’s telling the truth” questions and the breaking down of ones mind. Very fast reading, the only thing that was bad was the epilogue, Absolutely NO reason for that to be in there, please take it out.
Shalini Boland is an absolute queen. This book is one that will capture your attention, then keep you hostage until you’ve devoured the entire book.
This is one that I could easily imagine being on tv/film. We meet Zac and Nina, a young couple who move into a flat together. They have a very interesting selection of neighbours that really make you suspicious of who to trust.
This book is filled with tension and suspense. Boland has an exquisite talent of making you feel this as a reader. I have been so excited about this book, I am a huge fan of Shalini’s books and read them all. This is without a doubt my favourite.
This is a unique book which is filled with twists and turns. It is impossible to predict where Boland will take you with the plot. Vanessa has been an interesting character from the beginning, I have been really unsure what to think of her.
I love the way Boland writes, she is an author who is able to transport the reader to the characters and make this feel like it’s happening around you. I have been completely blown away, I don’t know how this author does it but each book just gets better and better.
This is an absolutely fantastic read and one I cannot recommend enough! This is a book worthy of all the stars to show just how wonderful a read this is.
I'm sorry to say that this book disappointed me. I thought it was a bit predictable, realistically there was only one person who was likely to want to cause trouble for Nina and Zac. There were a couple of minor twists that I thought were clever but not enough to take the book above a 3 star rating.
The Couple Upstairs is another unputdownable and propulsive read from the incomparable Shalini Boland. Once again, Ms Boland has crafted an addictive thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end, and I devoured this one in record time.
When Nina and Zac move into their beautiful new home, the future is looking bright. Both are running their own successful businesses, they are setting down roots in a beautiful part of the country, and they are confident in the strength of their relationship. Meeting their new upstairs neighbours, Chris and Vanessa Jackson, Nina feels that something about the couple's relationship is off, and wonders about the pregnant Vanessa's welfare living with a husband who seems to have a chip on his shoulder. But this is only the tip of the iceburg as Nina's shiny new beginning is quickly tarnished by a series of odd circumstances that leave her fearful for the future of both her business and her relationship. Whom among Nina's acquaintances could possibly be setting in motion a plan to destroy all that she holds dear?
This is a twisty psychological thriller that had me fully invested in an outcome that will have you retracing events looking for an inkling of a clue. Recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
