Little Mermaid retellings are one of my weaknesses, so I was excited to start reading this novella. It did not disappoint, though for the first part I was admittedly a little confused at first at how mermaids were going to fit into the plot. The pieces all started falling into place around a third of the way into the book.
My favorite part of this was the author's unique spin on the story. I've read a lot of Little Mermaid retellings, but I actually don't think I've read one written from this point of view. This made the overall tone much more bittersweet than other retellings I've read.
This was my first book by Pamela Sherwood, and I will definitely be reading future books in the series. (The next book is based off of Goose Girl, another of my weakness!)
Content: No language and mostly clean with some fade-to-black scenes
Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of To Hear the Sea Maid's Music in exchange for an honest review.
While To Hear the Sea-Maid's Music doesn't necessarily do anything wrong, I don't think it does anything to stand out from the sea (pun intended) of other Little Mermaid retellings that are out there. Our protagonist felt bland and generic and so did the rest of the story. I don't think this is one I'll remember long after finishing it.
