Welcome to Nocturnia, where the monsters have their own nation states and humans are either slaves, or food, or both. Where even the flowers will suck your blood if you venture near. Emma and Ryan have followed the trail of their missing older brother, Telly. When they discover that Telly is not only in Nocturnia, but also involved with the one entity that could bring an end to the human world, Emma and Ryan begin a desperate search to find him and escape the parallel world of nightmares. As they search, they come to suspect that they did not arrive in Nocturnia by accident. But if not, why are they here? Are their destinies somehow entwined with this nightmare world?

This was a fun an exciting read and perfect for the Halloween season. I really enjoyed reading about the main characters Emma and Ben (a pair of squabbling yet loving siblings) on the search for their older half brother and found myself hoping and wishing that their search wouldn’t be in vain.

Filled with traditional spooks and monsters but given an alternative twist Monteleone manages to create a new experience in the world of Nocturnia that kept me wanting to read on.

Dealing with themes such a family, friendship, segregation and slavery this book wasn’t just fun to read for the adventures and mayhem but also wittily sent messages about the importance of working together for the greater cause and how people are different but no less important than others.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and have already downloaded the other 2 to read asap.

Wow. I was wondering how a collaboration between two great authors would be, and I wasn't disappointed. This was very enjoyable. Great characters, great pacing, and a great world. Can't wait to start book two in the series. Will definitely encourage my daughter to read this one. #DefinitelyNotKansas #NetGalley
