My favourite duo are back! While I may have loved the first book just a little more, ‘Finlay Donovan Knocks Em Dead’ is everything I was hoping for in a sequel.
After finding a post on a women’s forum soliciting a hit on Finlay’s ex-husband, Finlay and Vero take it upon themselves to find out who the original poster is, and who expressed interest in the job. What ensues is more run ins with the Russian mob, kidnapping, arson and lots of close calls.
This book has everything that I love in a book. Some mystery, bit of romance, action and humour. You definitely have to suspend your belief with this one, and once you do, this book is non stop fun.
I thought I knew where the ending was going, but I was genuinely surprised by the final reveal. And of course, we are left with a cliff hanger, which is fine by me if it means a third book!
This series has quickly become one of my favourites and I’m so looking forward to the next one.
Thank you to Minotaur Books, St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Finlay and Vero are hilarious and manage to get themselves in some ridiculous situations again in this sequel to Finlay Donovan is Killing It. This story is full of tension, excitement, and lots of laughs. As a bonus, there’s a splash of romance thrown in, too.
I started the ebook, then put on the audiobook while I was driving and working, then got home and finished reading the ebook. The story just keeps moving and I couldn’t stop until I knew how it all worked out! This is a great book if you like mysteries but want a light fun read.
Thank you to @minotaurbooks for the digitial ARC and to @macmillanaudio and @netgalley for the ALC. All thoughts expressed are my own.
Loved this! This book is the perfect light, smart, and funny read. It is a follow- up to “Finlay Donovan is Killing it” - Finaly is back struggling with a case of writers block, juggling a few romantic interests, and trying to outsmart the hitmen trying to kill her ex-husband. If you were a fan of the first novel in the series, we definitely recommend this one. Looking forward to the next book.
Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead by Elle Cosimano
📚⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Spoiler alert: This review includes plot points from the first novel if you haven't read it (but also if you haven't, what are you doing with your life?). No spoilers for book two.
In the highly anticipated follow up to Cosimano's first hit Finlay Donovan novel, Finlay and her kids' nanny Vero are pulled into shenanigans once again. As they discovered at the end of the last story, Finn's ex-husband now has a hit out on him, so they use their new found knowledge of their town's criminal underbelly to try and figure out who contracted the hit and who was hired. On top of that, Finn is trying to protect her family, write her next novel, navigate her dating life with the hot cop and young lawyer, and manage the household when Vero starts slacking off and acting shifty.
As often happens with sequels, I really enjoyed this book, just not quite as much as the first one. I remember laughing more while reading book 1 because of Finlay's own dismay and shock at her circumstances, whereas she seemed a little more prepared in this one. All that said, this was still a very satisfying sequel which I stayed up way too late to finish in one sitting. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
This book comes out in less than a week: Feb 1/22!

This second book jumps right in where the first leaves off. I absolutely adore all of these characters; Finlay and Vero are #friendgoals (but without the dead bodies and mafia stuff). We get a little more of a love triangle in this one, which usually irritates me, but I found I didn't mind debating between Nick and Julian. I'm still flabbergasted by all the ridiculous situations Finlay gets herself into as she tries to protect those she loves, but I do love it. I can't wait to dig a little deeper into Vero's past in future books!
Thank you to NetGalley for my e-arc of this book. All opinions here are my own.
Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead is a delightful sequel! There is much to enjoy about this installment--Finlay and Vero are back to their usual shenanigans, the banter is as fun as the second time around, the book is quick and the chapters are short and well-paced, and Cosimano's writing voice remains stellar.
I found a bit of the plot to be a little *too* far-fetched. Yes, this is about a writer-turned-hitwoman so a bit of my belief is suspended, but still. I found myself surprised at where parts of the story go. Also, how many cars can Finlay and Vero possibly run through within a series!? Ha! Otherwise, if you liked the first one, you'll enjoy this one, too.
I listened to the first book on audio, and I found myself to be missing it while reading the second book. If you are like me, you may want to snag this one in audio format.
Huge thank you to @netgalley @minotaur_books for this free advanced copy!}

There is nothing better than a cozy mystery with great characters, laugh out loud moments, and story that makes you feel like you’re right there in it.
Even though I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first book I’ll definitely be continuing this series if we get a 3rd book.
This fast-paced and action-packed drama had me completely immersed in all aspects quickly becoming a page-turner as I could not put this book down. The first chapter set the tone for the hilarity that ensues when Finlay tries her best to prevent her ex-husband from being murdered. The mystery was cleverly written with plenty of opportunities for guessing who was doing what to whom with an eclectic cast of characters who had pivotal roles in the telling of this tale. Several mishaps in Finlay’s pursuit of a mysterious and unknown person had me in stitches and kept me in the game as I followed along with the hints provided by the author. The more the story progressed, the more frantic the search was to find this person. And oh, those twisty turns, the visually descriptive narrative, and the engaging dialogue, all enhanced how well this story was being told. This was brilliantly executed, especially when the identity of the person involved was revealed.
After absolutely devouring Finlay Donovan is Killing It, I was so thrilled to pick up the second in the series! Thank you so much to @minotaur_books and @macmillan.audio for the digital and audio copies of Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead!
This book picks up where the first left off, and we are back to following the adventures of Finlay and Vero. These characters are so fun and so well-written, and it’s easy to get caught up in their silly, wild, sometimes dangerous, amateur-sleuthing activities. The book as a whole is a great blend of twisty suspense and mystery with humor. I loved the plot so much, and it was so much fun watching it all unravel.
The audiobook is performed by Angela Dawe and comes in at 9 hours and 21 minutes, and it was fantastic to listen to. The time absolutely flew by! I’d highly recommend giving this one a listen if you’re an audiobook fan (and even if you’re not)!
Thank you to the publishers and #netgalley for the ARC of this title. This is a voluntary review and all opinions are honest and my own.
This book was everything the first book and continued the Finlay Donovan series perfectly. It was a great sequel, equally as enjoyable, funny, and cozy as the first.
My only critique is that I thought this sequel tried too hard in the beginning to subtlety call back the major events of the first book. Because it does this blatantly a reader could get away without reading the first book, so this may be a good thing. But for me it’s something that was distracting a bit.
However, once the book progressed & the second story found its stride apart from the first it was truly an enjoyable read.
Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead was just as enjoyable as the first book in the series. Finlay has received a new contract for her books and is in a better place financially, but still seems to have writers block. Once again, her agent is hounding her about her next book and she is scrambling. Vero has moved in with them so she now has a live-in Nanny. Steven's girlfriend is on house arrest and they are no longer together with him living temporarily in the trailer he uses as an office on the sod farm. When she and Vero find out that someone has taken a hit out on him, she is back in action. She might not love him, but he is the father of her children. Getting back involved with the Russian Mafia, finding a dead body and trying to deflect questions and interest from Nick, her sister's cop friend, she bumbles around trying to save her ex-husband while keeping out of jail herself. This situation could be just what she needs for her new book.
Elle Cosimano introduces us to new characters in this book. Vero and Finlay stumble upon the dark web and need help making sure no one can trace them. We meet a couple of young men who can do that, which seems to be the way it is in real life. We also meet Theresa's parents and sister, as well as Bree's parents. All are involved in the happenings in this story. Detective Nick Anthony plays a much bigger role in this book. He pops up several times when Finlay needs him and she is beginning to develop some feelings towards him. I do like him, but he seems a bit too good to be true, is he bending the law to get Finlay to like him? There was a lot happening in this book that kept me on my toes. There were a lot of twists and some crazy characters. These books are just plain fun, so don't expect it to be realistic, just sit and back, hang on and enjoy the ride.
This series deserves nothing but 5 stars!
It has quickly become my new favorite that I recommend to everyone! Although I struggled to keep up with some of the mystery aspects, the way the writing flows with the evenly paced plot is what kept me engaged. The story is so unbelievable that it sucks you right in! Although this installment had a different vibe, overall it kept the same shenanigans, humor and mystery.
This book has confirmed Vero as my new all-time favorite fictional character. Her one liners are absolute perfection and what kept me laughing out loud the whole way through! I would really love to see more from her perspective in the future.
I'm so glad this left off on another cliffhanger and there will be more coming in the series! I'm especially intrigued to see the conclusion of the complicated romance.
Finlay Donovan is Killing It, the delightful series debut by Elle Cosimano was recently nominated for the Best Humorous Mystery Novel of 2021 as part of Left Coast Crime’s Lefty Awards. Next week, the sequel – Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead – will be released and fans will discover that it is even better than the debut. Finlay Donovan is going to be part of the crime fiction community for a long time to come.
Picking up shortly after the previous novel ended, Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead once again finds Finlay and her best friend/nanny/accountant/roommate/ride-or-die/co-conspirator, Vero, once again on a madcap escapade through the criminal underworld – fighting arson, kidnapping, embezzlement, contract killers, and potty training.
Like Lucy and Ethel, anything this pair touches is bound to go wrong in countless ways and spectacular fashion. Case-in-point, when the online women’s forum that is a front for illegal activity posts an “ad” soliciting a hit on Finlay’s ex-husband, rather than call the police our dynamic duo accepts the assignment (after another hitman has expressed interest) and sets out to uncover the mastermind behind the plot.
Juggling the demands of a life-threatening private investigation with the sanity-threatening duties of motherhood is enough to turn anyone’s hair gray. After all, Finlay cannot allow her young daughter and infant son to spend time with their father while someone is trying to kill him, so she must rely on the help of family – her sister, a cop who fears a dirty diaper more than she fears an armed gunman, and her mother, who can’t seem to resist commenting on Finlay’s love life. Speaking of dating, Finlay is still faced with the exigent decision of choosing between the sexy young lawyer or the hot-as-hell cop – a quandary anyone would sign up for.
Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead could easily have become a ridiculous and over-the-top novel, but Elle Cosimano has the skill and talent to blend social satire with the mystery plot in completely believable – albeit hilarious – ways. In a short span of time, readers have become invested in these characters and watching them navigate the challenges of every-day life (along with their not-so-average criminal endeavors) is a welcome escape from 2022’s trials and tribulations. Cosimano packs laugh-out-loud moments in just about every chapter, even while the threats and danger increase to high blood pressure-inducing levels.
Red herrings and distractions abound in Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead, so the final resolution does come as a genuine surprise. The various twists and revelations along the journey keep the pacing high and the pages flying by. As has become Elle Cosimano’s trademark, there is another cliff-hanger ending that sets up the action for book three in the Finlay Donovan series, which might be viewed as frustrating by some, but most importantly guarantees that Finlay and Vero will be returning soon. For that, everyone can be thankful.
I have to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of the first book in the Finlay Donovan series. Characters that are that much of a disaster really stress me out. If I hadn't received an ARC Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead I probably wouldn't have picked the second book up. However, having received an ARC of the sequel from NetGalley, I'm really happy that I got the sequel. The pacing and plot are smoother and Finlay feels less chaotic in the book. The supporting characters like Vero, Steven, Theresa get a bit more depth and development in the second book as well. I'm really looking forward to the third book.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
FINLAY DONOVAN KNOCKS EM’ DEAD is the hilarious, quirky sequel to Finlay Donovan Is Killing It. Thank you so much to the publisher and netgalley for my e-arc in exchange for an honest review. This one publishes Feb 1! Less than a week!
If you’ve read the first book, you will love this one! If you haven’t read the first book, I highly recommend doing so! Not because you need to read it to understand what happens in book 2, but because Finlay is such a delightful character. You don’t want to miss out on what she gets up to!
I loved this second book more than the first! It’s definitely a sequel that doesn’t fall victim to the second in a series slump. It felt so nice to be back with Finlay, and reading about what she gets up to. Now, she has her nanny/accountant turned friend/sidekick with her! Vero is an absolute delight and the perfect friend Finlay needs.
I also really enjoyed how the book Finlay was writing, mirrored what was happening in her own life…. It was also so impressive how she came up with the plot on the spot! And that her editor loved it!
This book does have a bit of a love triangle… or even love square? It seemed everyone loves Finlay! Who is she going to end up with? It seems she may let her books decide for her…
I cannot wait for the next book! I mean, there has to be a third book… the way this one ended… there HAS to be another one!
I am obsessed with Finlay and Vero. This one was just as action punched and funny. Their adventures are so entertaining, and the book is fast paced just like the first one. Elle Cosimano does not miss a beat with the second book at all. I love her writing style so much. The ending had me on my feet and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens for the third book. I am here for all the Finlay adventures! A true fan!
Up front- this would be best enjoyed by those who read and liked the first book because, frankly, there isn't a lot of back story- a back story which is crucial to this installment. Finlay and her nanny/accountant Vero find themselves looking for the person who is soliciting a hit man to take out Finlay's ex Steven, mostly because they are concerned that it will happen when he has the kids for the day. Finlay's a novelist who hasn't been writing because she's too busy trying to track down the people om the web forum. There's a terrific scene where she constructs a pitch for her agent to present to the publisher on the fly and the scenes with the tech gurus she hires to help her are very relatable. That said, this is meant to be funny but Cosimano lost me about half way through because I wasn't up on who's who (what exactly did Theresa do?) and some of it was deeply implausible (what they do with the storage facility find), There is a good twist at the end. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. For fans of the first book.
Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead was a true delight! This book has something for everyone - romance, mystery, and comedy. Finlay and Vero make the perfect dynamic duo as they screw up and struggle to clean up their messes.
The book picks up right where the first leaves off. This time Finlay is trying to save her ex husband as someone puts out a hit on his life. (This is important in case you haven’t read the first one yet) I really enjoyed the romance between Nick and Julian, while trying to figure out which one would win Finlay’s heart. I was on the edge of my seat with all the things Finlay and Vero were doing and kept waiting for it to catch up to them.
I flew threw this book and found it so enjoyable. It was laugh out loud funny at times. I really enjoyed the little twist at the end of the book. It looks like there will be a third book and I’m so excited to see what shenanigans Finlay and Vero will get into next!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
To be honest and upfront, I was scared that it wouldn’t live up to book one. I found the first book to be perfect but I’m here to say, Elle Cosimano did it again! The second book was just as perfect as book one. Another fantastic read with the same awesome duo of Finlay and Vero. It was so hard to put down.
Picking up shortly after the events of book 1, this took a much different turn than I expected and it completely lived up to the first one. Someone wants Finlay's ex-husband dead, so she and her nanny, Vero, are on the hunt to track down both the person who placed the hit and the hitman. This series is so hard to classify as it's a mystery with murder but it's so fun and light-hearted! I haven't seen if there will be a 3rd book in this series, but I sure hope so!
