Loved the art and the tension between our two main characters, but aside from that, I just could not get into this story. The nearly non-existent plot bored me to tears and ties to greek mythology were pretty weak. I feel like this had a lot of potential to be fleshed out and heart wrenching, but it fell completely flat.

Maria Llovet knows better, I’d have thought, than to create a thinly veiled story, with plot twists and the like; but no substantial explanations. There is so little here it’s hard to even feel like the story was tangible. It’s unfortunate that what could be a clever plot is never pulled out and only briefly eluded to when it might matter.
While I own a number of the variant covers from this series, they all might include more detail and sense of the story than the actual story itself!
Llovet, as an experienced artist in the industry, she should have known this was too esoteric. The obsession with ran k u dom faces of the girls, lack of explanations and overall general confusion. It’s really too bad as girls are so rarely a part of secret societies or intrigue of this level. But alas, Eros/Psyche falls way short and has left me feeling disappointed.
beautiful art, but the premise made very little sense and the pacing was all over the place. i thought, based on the description, there would be far more supernatural elements but really it just felt like a dull, run-of-the-mill secret society story with a couple witchy vibes thrown in. the ending did throw me for a loop and provided something unexpected and interesting, but otherwise was not that impressed.
Eros/Psyche is beautiful both visually and thematically.
It is a definite, must read for comic/graphic novel lovers, and for those looking to expand their sapphic-themed tbrs into the realm of dark academia and greek retellings.
It was an interesting graphic novel to read but I don‘t think it was my style. I liked the mystery and the art style but I think the story itself was way too simple. I expected a little bit more from it.
I wanted to like this. It had so many elements that I enjoy. I just couldn't get into it. It was very slow moving and such a slow-burn I kept thinking I'd misread the description. Artwork was beautiful.
Maria Llovet's retelling, Eros/Psyche (originally a Greek Myth), was definitely an exciting spin to the existing narrative, giving it a sapphic plottwist.
Set in an all girls boarding school, it has a dark academia feeling to it. The story, even though entertaining, at times it was lacking depth and it was a bit hard to follow or understand. The same can be said for the writing - appearing clunky and unnatural at times - although I believe that's more of a translation error, rather than the story itself.
With Eros/Psyche there was a promise unfulfilled and whether it was the underdeveloped romantic plot or the vague writing, it left you wanting more.
The same cannot be said, however, for the phenomenal art and design of the graphic novel. With a little bit more improvement, the text can match the stunning visuals.
I am giving this 3 stars, but the art would be at least a 4.5 and the story 2.5 stars. I am excited to hear more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Maria Llovet for the ARC.
TW: Suicide, nudity, disturbing images.
Thank you to Netgalley for sending me an ARC of this book!
The author of this romance is from Spain, most concretely from Barcelona so I was very surprised and excited to see her work here :)
Sara and Silje are students in “The Rose” boarding school, are as they fall in love with each other they discover the greatest secrets and dangers their school is hiding.
I love myself a good sapphic romance story and even though this was not my type of writing, I enjoyed it. The drawing style is very original in my opinion and it gives a different vibe to the story.
This book has a really exciting concept, though not as much followthrough as I would have liked. The art is really intriguing while also not being too confusing. Still excited to see what else Maria Llovet does!
I will say, this book was better than I thought it would be. My expectations were pretty low though, after reading several other reviews.
I thought the idea of "The Rose" was unique and interesting, but I wish it had been explained more. I was often confused as things were mentioned (like the red slips of paper) and I wondered if I'd missed a page or two where they explained it.
The art was okay (some characters looked similar, which was confusing), but I personally value stories over art, and this one didn't really make sense to me.
I don't think Maria Llovet will be an author I read again, but this book was a nice, short experience to pass time.
The Eros/Spyche story is interesting but for me I just didn’t enjoy the art style and the writing. The romance just wasn’t interesting I suppose and like I said about the writing, it just was difficult to understand.
I really liked the history, the plot and everything in this graphic novel. I appreciate the relationship of them and how it reminded me of Eros and his lover. Really loved it.
I was looking a beautiful lesbian story inspired by the myth of Eros and Psyche, and I ended reading a story that I didn't understand at all.
The story was so confusing, were the girls in white costume dead? were the blond girl punished because she had a lover? the consequences of the rules, and the room itself... I really didn't get it.
Thank you netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
“The Rose” female boarding school is paradise for young girls…but only if you follow the rules. Because, if you disobey them, you can end up expelled, or even worse, dead.
Sara and Silje are two students learning the rules of the school, which includes classes by day...and the casting of curses and spells by night. A love develops between the two, which is tender, but threatens to break under the weight of the dark secret society within The Rose.
I absolutely loved the artwork in the sapphic comic, it was simply uniquely breathtaking, I feel as though this book was purely made to show the artwork off as the story/ actual plot fell a bit short, though for me the artwork made up for it. I spent the entire time scanning the art rather than reading the minimal words included. I would highly recommend you pick this book up yourself.
Eros/Psyche is a slow-burn sapphic dark academia romance that really just wasn't enough for me.
The comic itself simply didn't provide the necessary details or plot to make the experience enjoyable. Llovet is talented, and the stylized art was great, but this needed a lot more than what was on the page.
Frankly, the plot is serviceable if everything that's in the blurb was on the page and there was a bit more added to nearly every scene.
3.5 Stars (I received an e-arc from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review)
This an interesting story, one that I could not predict which way the story was going. It takes place at a mysterious all girls boarding school, almost like a coven. We are never really told why the girls are there and what this school is teaching them. The art style is quite simple but the colour palate is very mesmerizing with a mix of bright and purples mixed white and black. The relationship between the two girls was cute but the ending was not as satisfying as I would of liked.
First, some TW for you to consider when reading this: suicide and blood.
This is a wonderful sapphic story. It's not too heavy on the plot, but visually it's SO GOOD. Summing the story is a dark academia gothic kind of vibe with heavy plot twists.
Okay so I wasn’t able to read this because Netgalley wouldn’t let me open the pdf to download it, but it sounds like a lgbt retelling of a Greek myth which sounds hella cute!
This title was a little confusing to follow at times, but was overall enjoyable to read. Does a great job of creating suspense and urgency with in the characters world. Twist, turns and serious mind-f****s. Would recommend.
This is the story of La Rosa's Boarding School. Girls take classes by day and cast curses at night. Volume one collects issues 1-4.
The writer/artist also was part of the creative team for Faithless which I loved. Llovet's art style is phenomenal. When I read Faithless I knew that I needed to find everything that Llovet has done. The story was so good I couldn't put it down. I was confused at the beginning I could not tell where it was going to go. I love that because when you read as many comics as I do sometimes you know where the story is going to go, that never happened here. I was surprised and everything came together in the end.
