Nope. No. This was terrible. Overly sexualized artwork, absolutely ridiculous, so unnecessary. Coloring was pretty and popped but not for what it is. Pass.
Everything about this is a complete mess. There are passages of text that go on for multiple pages. The story is indecipherable. Something about a woman with a twin who is tied to someone from the Iliad and the Greek gods. Clearly Roth doesn't understand that comics are a visual medium. This is a novel with illustrations around the prose (and terrible prose at that). The women in the illustrations are drawn oversexualized like something you'd see from Top Cow or Aspen Comics. It's not even for storytelling purposes. Their just walking around in lingerie or swimwear all the time.
I was really trying to finish this graphic novel but as a woman, I couldn't stand how women are sexualized in this story and used by the men. I read half of it and I had the feeling that the story is focused more on showing off Clara's body than on actual story. The art in this book is quite nice but very hard to read from because everything in it is too dark. I don't think this book was for me, maybe other people will enjoy it more.
I was pretty sure I had downloaded it and but when I wanted to read it I couldn’t find it . It was too late to download it again. So I couldn’t read it.
Wasn't my favorite to be honest. I still highly recommend for anyone that loves storys like this. Maybe I will give it another try down the road and maybe will change my mind.
This was a beautifully done comic book, the art style worked for the story it told. I enjoyed the story itself and hope there is more in this series.
If you want to get a propper view on my thoughts on this graphic novel just know that I really considered DNF'ing it for a while. I don't typically DNF and definetely not something I can so quickly finish as a graphic novel. However, this was torture to read. The plot absolutely made 0 sense. It was just so hard to follow and I feel like so many treads weren't resolved at all. The art style was also just not it. It was sometimes very hard to see what exactly was going on and sometimes the writing was even unreadable because of it. Talking about the writing it was so difficult to push myself through. It was just so dense and pretentious. I can't even. Needless to say I did skim read some of these parts. Oh, and then I didn't even talk about the absolutely unnececary oversexualisation of the female characters. Absolute barf.
So...
In my opinion, this book is a mess. A big, hot, garbage pile type mess. The cover and synopsis are quite deceiving, to be brutally honest. It sounded like some sort of fun, thrilling book and the cover gives off X-Men vibes with the brightness and colour contrasting. But, it's not really all that great.
The story is hard to follow and very confusing, it feels like we tried jamming three full length book plots into one, and it just was not cohesive.
I did try and I forced my way through this book, but it was just very hard to read. Not my thing.
One out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
This graphic novel was not what I expected at all. The plot was confusing and difficult to follow. There's pages of full text throughout the story which threw me off the graphic novel format of the book. I wouldn't have minded reading the text except it was written in a font that was hard to read and clashed a bit with the colours of the artwork. The artwork is interesting and detailed but you will only be able to see it if you read this in colour. I don't recommend reading this on an ereader that only has black and white capabilities because you will probably go cross-eyed. I feel like this story had lots of potential but wasn't executed the greatest.
This was not for me. The writing was dense, the page layouts had SO much going on, and it immediately came off like the misogynistic comics of days gone by.
I don't know why this is not visible in my NetGalley shelf. 😭
Hopefull, it will show so that I can write a review.
I couldn't even finish the book, the writing was so poor and the art over sexualized. The plot was corny and ridiculous. Not for me!

"My tale starts with a 'once upona time'. A long time ago, beings lived who could control the elements, immortality, and time. We called them gods and gave them our worship. Theyplayed with us like toys, took our lives and sabotaged our love. Now, the godsare myths. Stories in books-not to be confused with our modern world. Ibelieved this until I found myself tumbling through a dream. This dream took meto another life. To a forgotten time in a bloody age. I dreamt of Hades's sonand a lustful goddess. I dreamt of limitless power and revolving time. I dreamta death and love that was mine... My name is Cara Wynter, and this is my story."
The synopsis really drew me in, and Iwas so excited to read this graph novel. However, once I started to read it, I noticedthat the plot did not flow at all, in short it was chaotic, all over the placewith no rhyme or reason to it and as well it was very slow paced. What I did like was the artwork, I loved thedark and twisted scenes of it.
I want to thank Netgalley and DiamondBook Distributors for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

JP Roth's Ancient Dreams by JP Roth is an intriguing fantasy graphic novel, but I honestly don't know what it was about. I'm going to use a quote from the synopsis instead, since it explains the plot better than I could: "Cara Wynter is a literature student living with her twin sister, Lily, in Fairhaven Washington. A daughter of witches, touch brings Cara only pain, and dark visions of pasts and futures she can rarely change. Already fighting to exist in her strange reality, she begins to crumble when the reoccurring dreams of her own death begin. In a desperate attempt to unlock the secrets in the violent images, she finds herself lost in a contest between love, and the will of the ancient gods."
Overall, I was very confused while reading JP Roth's Ancient Dreams. I was initially drawn in by the beautiful cover and interesting description. Unfortunately, the graphic novel was unfinished and disjointed. Sometimes, the story was told in graphic novel form, and other times, it was interspersed with pages of text. I was confused at the beginning, but eventually, it started to feel more connected. I feel like this graphic novel would appeal to fans of Zenescope comics. I took off 3 stars because of excessive "pin-up shots," suggestive poses, and violence. I don't think I'm the target reader for this graphic novel. If you're intrigued by the synopsis, or if you're a fan of Zenescope comics, you can check out this book when it comes out in November!
I found the story a bit hard to follow. It seemed to jump around quite a bit. There were also walls of text that sometimes felt like a chore to read, and sometimes the formatting was bad and it wasn't even possible to read. Maybe the print version would be better.
I did love the art. It's so colorful and beautiful. And I thought the font was really unique. I've never seen comic speech written in neon green or hot pink and I absolutely loved it! It was really sharp and clear and easy to read the speech bubbles.
I picked this up multiple times during the day trying to read it, but just couldn’t continue with it.
Both the cover and description are quite deceiving. I thought the illustrations were going to be quite colourful, however, much of the artwork is very darkly coloured with no depth or shading, and high saturation and contrast. Much of the artwork felt heavy, confusing, dated and eventually quite boring.
The description of this book was interesting, but as soon as you start to get into the story more, you quickly realize that the author has jammed in much more than is properly communicated in the storyline- in other words, I became confused and disinterested. And to add onto all of this, the writing is really bad, it feels as if no editing whatsoever has gone into this at all. The sentences we’re making me cringe, plenty of grammar and punctuation missing too.
The best way for me to describe the vibe of this graphic novel is to visualize that a 16-year-old Wattpad fan fiction writer watched Twilight, 50 Shades Of Grey, and Clash Of The Titian’s while on shrooms and wrote about it.
I DNF’d this book at 20% in, I would not recommend.
1 star.

This book was nearly impossible to download. I tried multiple apps with multiple attempts on each. I FINALLY got it to download on an app called Pocketbook. I'm not sure why it's not available for the Netgalley app? But back to the book itself. I only read a few pages before I decided it's not for me. It's very dark in tone and visually which didn't match my expectations from the cover and description. It kind of reminded me of the Lock and Key comics. And I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the review opportunity. I wish my experience had been more positive.
After I download the protected pdf version, I was unable to open or convert it. I even used 3 other devices to try and read it but nothing worked. I can’t read it. I was so excited by the description. The low score isn’t towards the book but the access
I was very intrigued by the description of this graphic novel: greek mythology mixed with the modern world? Yes please. Unfortunately, I don't even know what to make of everything, even after reading the book.
We follow 18 year old Cara Wynter, a literature student living with her twin sister. A daughter of witches, Cara is plagued by dark visions and nightmares and she is wrestling with her own sanity. Somehow this is all connected to the Ancient Greek gods.
The artwork is very dark, sometimes up to a point where I could hardly see what was happening. Also the twins are very sexualized for 18 year olds. I guess this is the standard of how women are portrayed in graphic novels, but I don't particularly like it. Safe to say, I was surprised the author of this graphic novel was actually a woman. The boobs are big, the bodies are tight, the hair has a lot of volume and the faces are nothing less of pretty. But they don't work out and aren't very fit according to the story... Yeah right.
The artwork also changed many times which kind of pulled me out of the story every time. Also a lot of switches between graphic novel and just pages of background story/text. Which made this very slow paced and confusing.
The plot/storyline was just chaos. I honestly don't even know what I just read and how to summarize it. I have no idea where this is supposed to be going and it didn't feel connected at all. Just chaos.
I had high expectations, but I guess this just wasn't for me.
I really wish I could give this an honest review but I’ve tried over several different devices to access this but it does not open.
