The Black Storm by Kathryn Le Veque is a perfect choice for all those who want to travel back in time, more specifically to the Middle Ages, where a protective knight, a damsel in distress, and three dogs will capture your attention until the very end. And believe me, you will not be disappointed, on the contrary, this book is fantastic, not only from an entertaining aspect but also from a detailed and informative aspect, which is a real rarity in historical romances these days. Reading the richly detailed descriptions will probably make you look for additional information about the period.
One look was enough for Catherine de Tuberville to immediately fall in love with that brave knight, that unusual man, whose arms offer security and protection... Those blue eyes that mesmerized her, offer delights unknown, yet so wanted… Fearless and powerful, he is the right man for her... Beautiful Catherine is the answer to all his prayers, a woman who can give him everything that life took away from him at birth, she is perfect for him... A sweet love story, right? But what will happen when a greedy mother and a dangerous villain are added to the picture? The story takes a different turn, right? What is the value of a daughter, except as a tool to improve the social position and family wealth...? Why is there a need to enjoy true love, when power is so much sweeter…? Will the tender love of Ridge de Reyne and Catherine de Tuberville have the power to overcome all obstacles or will it remain just a sweet dream?
It cannot be disputed that Kathryn Le Veque has once again woven a story in which good and evil compete till the very end, emotions rage, and love and friendship become the ultimate joy. Pages filled with enough tension and suspense, with an interesting plot and well-developed main and secondary characters are the equation. which this author applies to all her books, but always in a new, unique light. The main character is a true embodiment of what a knight should have been in the Middle Ages. Brave and honest, so utmost graciousness and courteous towards women, Ridge is pure perfection in every way, except for one flaw, which unfortunately has been his burden since birth. The heroine, on the other hand, surprised me with her strength, gentle and sheltered her whole life, Catherine de Tuberville shows determination and courage that really do not fit in the description of a gentle unmarried lady of the period. But I loved her character even more because of that. The supporting characters, some known to readers, some not were so well integrated into the whole story, purposefully integrated to complement the whole. What always impresses me about Kathryn Le Veque ‘s style is her dedication to research and detail. It must be admitted that it takes a lot of effort and talent to create a story that effortlessly draws the reader back to the 13th century, that at times you seem to be there and vividly follow the events from nearby. The author masterfully shows us the meaning and purpose of a woman's life in a society, shackled by social norms, huge flaws, and expectations that can undoubtedly startle the modern reader.
Without any doubt, The Black Storm is a story that can be read in one sitting, so simple, and so easy to read, but deep and profuse at the same time. A story that is so full of truths, some historical and some general. Highly recommended for all those who enjoy stories that reflect a distant time and place, and love as the driving force behind us all.
this checked off everything I look for in a book. Was not disappointed. Really enjoyed this book. I will read more from this author. Must read. Historical fiction oh yeah. Love me some of this.
What a delightful book. I love this authors books and this one is not the exception!! Great book. I would recommend this to all my friends.
What a great book! I loved Catherine and Ridge and their whole convoluted courtship. They have a long road to travel to their HEA. A road fraught with a villianous enemy, familial betrayal and more opposition than any two people should ever have to deal with. Kudos Kathryn!
Thank you Kathryn Le Veque, Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest feedback.
Loved Ridge and Catherine - sweet, romantic, humor, action and suspense. As always, a great read from Kathryn Le Veque.
A Warrior in Love
It was love at first sight between Catherine and Ridge, but Catherine’s mother had other plans. It was prestige she sought, and she did not care that the knight she wanted for her daughter was brutal, devious, and cruel. Would Catherine and Ridge survive the evil that stalked them? An evil knight was out for revenge, and a woman who should care about her daughter was plotting her downfall. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to those who like medieval romance with suspense and intrigue.
Another enjoyable read by Ms. Le Veque! Born a bastard, Ridge has served two kings and now fights in tournaments to earn money to repair his lands. He did not expect to meet a woman like Catherine, who enthralls him upon their first meeting. Catherine has dealt with a mother whom she could never please and who only saw Catherine as a means of increasing her status and wealth. Ridge does not have a title, but seeks to court Catherine, and has the support of her brothers, but a man of the past wants to destroy Ridge and stealing the woman he is courting would be the perfect revenge. Ridge, Catherine, and her brothers have to keep her safe from those who wish to use her for their own purposes. Will their courtship survive all the obstacles that will come their way?
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ridge de Reyne is a knight who has served two kings. He’s presently making his fortune on the tournament circuit as a man of integrity and honor. When he accidentally meets Lady Catherine de Tuberville his life changes. Catherine’s mother has her own plans and plots to marry Catherine off in exchange for wealth and prestige, she doesn’t care he’s the worst sort of villain she’s selling her daughter to her advantage. A captivating love story as Ridge and Catherine follow their hearts in the action adventure romance to only be thrown twist and turns by their adversaries. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the great book that has a story so intricately woven with history and romance as Kathryn le Veque takes you on an emotional rollercoaster.
Durham England 1238 A. D.
He was the head of the most powerful team of knights, who competed in the circuit of tournaments.
Known as "The Black Storm" due to leaving a path of destruction in his wake as he wins.
She was so excited to be at the tournament watching her brothers compete. Of course she knew her mother had in mind to find a her a husband to be rid of her.... In a twist it seemed her two little dogs had found the most handsome of knights and she was mesmerized by those blue eyes!
Unfortunately there was a villain, with a Napoleon complex, and even more her terrible mother, so the journey was not quite as easy as it could be!
I adored the wonderful characters and visiting with a lot of Kathryn's knights from other stories. She always make weaves such amazing tales that I can never get enough of!
OMG! HOLY MOLY THIS WAS A GREAT BOOK.
I love Kathryn's writing because it takes a very special writer to take a secondary character and have him become such an amazing hero.
Passion, love, loss, unique characters, intriguing and interesting plot, a fabulous setting, and visits from my favorite Kathryn Le Veque made this a book I will read and reread and reread.
I absolutely recommend this book and encourage you to read it ASAP!
I just reviewed The Black Storm by Kathryn Le Veque. #TheBlackStorm #NetGalley
Sir Ridge de Reyne has been in service to two kings and now makes his living on the tournament circuit.
Kathryn Le Veque gives us some wonderful background information about tournaments with this story. Other familiar participants include William de Wolfe, Kevin, and Kieran.
Lady Catherine de Tuberville has come to the tournament with her three brothers and her mother. Catherine's mother cares nothing for her. Her mother's only wish is that Catherine marry someone noble and very rich.
I loved the chemistry between Catherine and Ridge. No huge battle in this story -- a tournament that includes a villain, some surprises, and drama.
Wonderful book, I highly recommend!
A protective knight, a damsel in awe of him, and three dogs make this an entertaining romance. I enjoyed the instant attraction between Ridge de Reyne and Lady Catherine de Tuberville as they were drawn together like magnets. The initial interaction between Catherine's two little dogs and Ridge's massive hound was hilarious. However, Catherine's mother was evil to the core and her machinations were appalling. I particularly enjoyed the author's descriptive passages of scenes of the tournament and felt as if I were there in person. Although Ridge is Catherine's hero, she was able to defend herself when the necessity arose, leaving her own share of mayhem. Unfortunately, more finesse was required when dealing with her mother. This romance is part of a series, but it nevertheless is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Such a sweet story with true heroes!
In our modern world, we have boxing and MMA; in the 1200s, there was the world of jousting tournaments. Remember The Knight's Tale movie? This story takes that setting to the next level and gives us a glorious story of good vs evil, love and friendship, heroes and villains.
Ridge is a tournament champion, a man of impeccable honor who is building his fortune one winning purse at a time. His team is the one to beat, and a finer set of chivalrous knights don't exist.
At the Durham tournament, Ridge's huge Irish wolfhound is set upon by a pair of tiny yapping terrors, whose owner, Catherine, follows them to Ridge's camp. Catherine's brothers are also competing at the tournament, while their mother plots to marry Catherine off in exchange for wealth and prestige. The man she has chosen is the worst sort of villain, drawing Ridge's protective instincts to the forefront just as he's beginning to recognize his undeniable attraction to the sweet-tempered Catherine.
The story builds into a splendid love story with plenty of tension and suspense. The attention to detail by the author is exquisite, rendering a story that effortlessly draws the reader back to the 13th century. I was instantly captivated by this beautiful story and devoured it in one sitting.
The HEA was triumphant and tender; everything a reader could hope for. This story is an example of the very best in medieval romance, and I highly recommend it for all romance readers. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Such a great story!
What kept this story alive was the storyline and the baddies. The tension surrounding the plotting from the mother and the ruthlessness of de Luzie was so very well done. As expected, the author is a master at putting the reader right into the action and educating you along the way. I now know more about medieval tournaments and jousting than I did!
If I had to give a critique however it would be that I did not believe the character of Ridge de Reine. I absolutely loved his demeanor and valiantness, he was swoon-worthy, romantic, but I did not believe him to be a medieval knight. He was a seasoned knight, having seen war, and scraped his way through life and tournaments, plus growing up a bastard- he was too polished, too 'knight in shining armor', too perfect. And that detracted from the story because I just couldn't 'see' him as I read the story. He needed more grittiness, roughness, to be less perfect for me to believe in him.
Also, there were several instances of the story just lulling with useless dialogue that we had already heard, for example when Charles speaks to the tournament officials about de Luzie- the same sentences are used about four times as he tells various people about his conversations. This seemed excessive and not needed.
Otherwise, I really enjoyed this story and do recommend it.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my review.
A tournament knight, a beautiful girl, a wicked mother, and a villain. Throw in two fearless small dogs and one very large coward of a dog and you have all the ingredients for a LeVeque masterpiece. Once again Katheryn LeVeque takes you back in time and gives you a story with depth and soul. The characters draw you in from the first page and the story keeps you turning the pages. A glimpse of the De Wolfs men make you smile but this story is all Ridge and Catherine. He is everything you want in a Le Veque knight and she is brave and beautiful. A page turner for sure. Well worth the read
Catherine de Tuberville had never attended a tournament. Secluded by her family, this was her first time to be among the men and women of her age and peerage. Ridge de Reyne had not only arrived to participate in the tournament, he had already forged an agreement with de Wolfe of Castle Questing. As they had a mutual enemy by the name of Renard de Luzie, an evil excuse for a man. When Catherine’s dogs escape and make an appearance in de Reyne’s camp, the two make their acquaintance and are immediately smitten with each other.
Catherine’s mother has never been a kind, loving woman toward her only daughter. She wants to marry her daughter off to the highest bidder, not necessarily the best man. As the mother and daughter bicker, another is watching and waiting to make a move.
This was a fast paced, fun read in the de Reyne series!
The Black Storm by Kathryn Le Veque is a medieval romance in the Le Veque tradition. Ridge de Reyne is 39 years old and the undisputed champion of the tournament circuit. Lady Catherine de Tuberville is the only daughter of a minor noble who has his head in the clouds and a climber of a mother. Blythe De Tuberville only cares about the family Catherine marries into, nothing else. She wants noble and she wants rich. Catherine embarrasses her mother because she has a minor speech impediment. No one else seems to care. Catherine and her brothers have come to this tournament, the brothers to participate and Catherine so her mother can find her a husband. When her two dogs run off, Catherine follows and meets Ridge. She is immediately taken, as is he. He comes to the feast that evening, astounding his team, because he never attends. Not only that but he's washed and shaved and wearing a clean tunic: his finest. He all but offers for Catherine that evening, but does let her brother know he wants permission to court her. Meanwhile, her mother is negotiating with Renard de Luzie, the son of a French count. They spend the evening lying to one another. Blythe thinks she has found the perfect husband for Catherine. No one agrees.
One of the perks of this book is that we get a small interaction with William de Wolfe, Kevin Hage, and other knights of old. Ridge is a good character, liked and respected by all, except de Luzie. De Luzie wants be Ridge and he is not. He is jealous, a poor sport, and a killer. Catherine's brothers are aghast at what their mother had cooked up, but she is a slippery character, as well. It is a good story with a predictable, in many ways, ending. That is what romance is all about: a good story leading to the ending we all knew would be there. Le Veque is a master with a strong following, an author a reader can always count on. Loved it. Thanks, again, Kathryn Le Veque.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of The Black Storm by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #theblackstorm
This was an entertaining, well-written book. The characters and the story line drew me in, held my interest and I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.

💋
Really sweet adventure set in Medieval Times, the story takes place at a tournament and our hero is Ridge de Reyne, special guest are the DeWolfe boys, William, Kieran, Paris and Stephan.
I very much enjoyed this tale of the tournament’s, I learned quite a bit I didn’t know before about competition, and there were wonderful description of the setting, tents and the exhibits themselves. Also having the rules explained was something new, I always wondered wear the Lists got their name from.
It made the book more real and easier to imagine.
The characters as always in this authors books were interesting and entertaining, a wonderful bad boy to go against our Ridge and mess up the love story that’s developing with Catherine.
I would love to see books of the de Tuberville brothers and see where they end up.
On the whole the book was not just entertaining but informative and very easy to read. Lovers of Medieval will enjoy this one.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
The author writes in great detail about the times, clothing, tournaments and food offered. This book kept you routed to the spot and made you feel like you were really there. Ridge and Catie met in unusal circumstances, but they were drawn to each other immediately. Her mother was a evil woman for what she was plotting for her only daughter. An excellent read from start to finish.
