I am a huge fan of Peter Swanson's thrillers, after having adored Eight Perfect Murders last year. This is another great, compulsive read. I couldn't put it down, an absolute pleasure to read.
Nine random people receive a list of nine names in the mail. Their own name and those of eight strangers. There is nothing else to indicate who these other people are, or why they find themselves on a list with them. Like most people, they puzzle over it for a moment or two before going on about their lives, except for one of the names who happens to be an FBI agent. She can't help looking into it but comes up with nothing until there is a murder victim who had his own copy of the list in his hand when he died.
I like the way the story was told. There was no discernable connection between any of the people so alternating sections revealed them from the time they got the list until they met their unfortunate end. There were references to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None as well as subtle references to Eliot's classic poem, The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock.
This reminded me of Swanson's previous book, Eight Perfect Murders which I liked a lot.
Nine strangers receive a mysterious letter in the mail. Nine strangers receive a list of names in that letter. Each one of those nine individuals names are on the list. One by one the nine strangers begin to die…
If you are a fan of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, you will greatly enjoy Peter Swanson’s Nine Lives. This book will keep readers on their toes and constantly guessing who the murderer is because everyone is a suspect. This book was a quick read and I tore through it in one sitting. Vastly enjoyable and perfect for any fan of mystery/thrillers.
The pacing was good, and I always like it when an author makes it seem like anyone could be the killer. However, I did figure out who the killer was fairly quickly, although this did not take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. I haven’t read any of Swanson’s previous works, but I will definitely be going back for more. 4.25 stars.
I received a free digital ARC from NetGalley and William Morrow in exchange for an honest review.
One of the best mysteries I have read in a long time. Short chapters with characters that had enough description. Straight to the point everything written added and completed the story. Usually with a lot of characters my mind spins worrying if I can keep track. Not the case for this well written and executed. I am so used to figuring out plot twists that this book had me going until towards the end. I didn't see it coming. Loved the ending. One of the best mystery books I have ever read.
If you liked Eight Perfect Murders then you'll enjoy Swanson's latest as well. In his distinct voice we're once again in a Christie-like world which Swanson references a few times with the inclusion of And Then There Were None in all its title iterations.
The ending is both frustrating and satisfying, the frustration really coming from a sadness of unnecessary loss deemed fair retribution.
This kept me guessing until the end. A unique spin on an idea that has been done many times before, but the list kept it fresh and engaging.
I absolutely loved this book. I loved how the set-up with the names on the list occurred. I loved how the plot kept me on my toes. The author did a phenomenal job at allowing the reader to be connected to the detective work by offering up multiple points of view. The characters were relatable and I found myself rooting for many of them, even though it was clear what was happening to them. The twist at the end made me audibly gasp and I loved the way it wrapped up. I was also surprised at the depth of emotion that I felt for one of the people on the list. As you found out more and more about their background and their life, I felt an overwhelming sadness for the character. Overall, a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.
FANTASTIC psychological thriller!!! Swanson knows how to deliver a story that'll keep the reader riveted and anxiously awaiting the next page! His books keep getting better and better!!!!
Peter Swanson's NINE LIVES was a superb, fast-paced read. Similar to EIGHT PERFECT MURDERS, NINE LIVES is a pretzel of a thriller with plenty of easter eggs for mystery super-fans. This read was incredibly engaging and kept me guessing until the satisfying reveal. With plenty of twists and sudden turns, I enthusiastically recommend Swanson's latest.
Thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
4+ stars
Nine people receive a letter with their name, plus eight others, on it. No one knows each other but they start to die. What is the connection and why are they being targeted?
I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced book. Each chapter has a section on each (remaining) character. I loved how you are getting into a character and then bam!
Now I have to reread Then There Were None.
I've read a lot of Peter Swanson's books and I can say that this is his best work yet -- and I loved Eight Perfect Murders, so that is saying something.
Nine Lives takes everything I loved about Eight Perfect Murders and builds on it even more.
Nine seemingly random people get a list of names. Just a list of names, no explanation. Soon, one by one, they start dying. Short of the first few victims, readers get a glimpse into the lives of each of the people on the list. You get invested in these characters. Are you they so randomly chosen? Is there some thread that connects them all? Who is doing this and why?!?!
Like Eight Perfect Murders, other literary works are mentioned and referenced, unlike Eight Perfect Murders you don't feel like you are missing something by not having read all those other works.
Can't wait for the pub date so I can start recommended this one to readers!!
Nine Lives is an intense, fast-paced thriller that'll have you guessing to the very end. I liked the short chapters and the multiple POVs. I really had no idea until the end what direction it was going in and felt caught up in the book and the characters. One of the best mystery/thrillers I've read lately!
Highly recommend!
Nine names on a sheet of paper mailed to nine individuals who seemingly have no connection to each other. Junk mail? A threat? A Joke? It doesn't seem all that important until the people named on the list are murdered one-by-one. The police and the FBI are called in and still, the murders continue. Will FBI Agent Jessica Winslow's theory play out before she too is murdered? Her name is also on the list. Author Swanson gives voice to the nine victims in alternating chapters giving us a glimpse into the lives of each one. Are all nine going to be murdered before the murderer is caught? Swanson leads readers on a guessing game until the very end. Couldn't put this one down!
I feel like I used up eight of my lives reading this in a good way. This book is a tense taunt thriller that will leave you reeling and wanting more. I absolutely loved it.
What a great mystery….very concise is a good way to describe it. No filler, extra’s, no useless characters that don’t add to the story. There are nine people on a list, you read about these people, and it was great!
This is a perfect mystery. Everything about it was thrilling. The plot holds together, the characters are engaging and there was nothing trite or predictable about it.
Nine people are sent a list, nine names on the list, then they start being killed. Readers can’t easily figure out who the murderer was, until the end. Every page was full of excitement and surprisingly well developed characters.
Best mystery I’ve read in a long time!
Thank you Netgalley for this opportunity, loved it!
A short suspenseful book perfect for a quick read that wants to be And Then There Were None, an Agatha Christie tale. Nine people receive a list with their names and eight others on it with no explanation. There is nothing in common between the people listed until they start to die, one by one.
Peter Swanson is one of my favorite authors and I have read all of his books. Nine Lives was a fantastic read. I downloaded it this morning and my day was consumed with it! I literally didn't put it down until I finished, This was a quick read with many twists. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy. I look forward to recommending this book when it's published in the Spring.
