I like the unique concept of having “thinker” vs “feeler” sides of the poem. I liked a couple of these, specifically on the Thinker side.
“To love yourself is to come home to yourself.
No matter how far you've journeyed
or how long you've been away, you are always
the guest of honor here.
Slip on your crown.
Make a wish on your candles.
The celebration of your essence starts now.“
I had high expectations for this collection but after reading several pieces I felt this collection just wasn't for me. I wished I would've liked it more than I did.
Self Love Poetry is the first collection from Self Love Philosopher Melody Godfred. Godfred can usually be found posting inspirational quotes and selling jewellery on social media and she makes a surprisingly seamless transition to poetry. Without the clamouring capitalism of Godfred’s ‘self love pinky rings’, her poems emerge as precise and moving in equal measure. By telling each poem twice (once for the Thinkers, once for the Feelers) Godfred manages to present two unique angles on the same thought while avoiding repetition. It’s an impressive technical effort and a soothing read for anyone who feels heart and head sore after the pandemic. Obviously we all have to pay the bills, but I hope Godfred finds more time for poetry over the next few years.
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
3.5 Stars (I received an e-arc from Net Galley)
I did enjoy this collection with the concept of the left page being written by the left side of the brain and right page is by the right brain. There was nothing that really stood out to me but I did enjoy getting back into reading poetry.
Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers & Feelers by Melody Godfred is a poetry collection with a theme of self-love. The poems themselves are very simplistic and the collection could be gotten through in a relatively short time.
In my honest opinion, the collection came off a bit too simplistic. It felt more like a collection of affirmations. Some pieces were repetitive in such a way that it actually made those poems a bit tedious and stressful to read.
That all said, the collection's content is great to help boost self-confidence. It is heart-warming and wholesome.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Self Love Poetry is a beautifully written and put together book of poems created uniquely for the thinkers and feelers amongst us. I found so many of these poems relatable and the book sparked many emotions as I read through it. This is a unique book of poems and I love that the main theme was about self love which is something that is so important but what many of us neglect to do and have for ourselves.
I definitely recommend this book to all.
Definitely a heart-warming, wholesome collection of thoughts around self-love and acceptance, that could certainly cheer you up if you are in need of a boost of self-confidence. I really appreciated the distinction between thinkers and feelers, as well! As poetry, though, it didn't particularly blow me away or impress me!
As someone that has struggled with mental illness my entire life, finding books like this that I can relate you, really helps me in my journey. Feeling validated in an artistic form that is able to make me feel less alone in the world is everything.
I really enjoyed this collection of poems and thought the premise was very clever. The right and left brain and style of poems made me think and the affirmation style made them memorable. I will look out for more poems by this author.
Thank you for the arc.
Melody Godfred's collection of self love poetry is one to read again and again to uplift you when you're feeling down. It was such an interesting concept to write the poem from the perspective of thinkers and then again as feelers. I could relate to both poems and found myself comparing each poem to see the connections. The poems make you feel like someone else understands your experience and are truly uplighting. Godfred's writing validates one's self worth, and make you feel like they were written for you.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this title. I look forward to reading more of Godfred's titles in the future.
I loved that each poem was written twice, allowing different people to get their own interpretations. The poems left me feeling better about myself. I am grateful that this book came into my life. I am very interested in reading the other works by this author.
Forgot to download this ARC but read it some other way!
This got me feeling all the feelings!
Love it so so so much!
Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to go on a adventure in getting to know themselves.
This is a beautiful collection of work. Melody Godfred focuses on self love, but from perspectives of the left and right side of the brain. I loved this literary device and I thought it made the poems that more powerful.
While some poetry is easy to consume all in one sitting, I think this is better served in small doses. Picking it up at the end of the day, when you need a break, or a change in perspective, is how to get the most out of “Self Love Poetry”.
While many of these ideas and conclusions aren’t new, this book serves as an important and gentle reminder. I also think this is a good book for anyone wanting to dive a bit more into poetry or non-fiction.
***ARC***
I really liked this poetry book, focused one self love and analysing yourself, it was interesting to see two point of views: the sentimental one and the reasonable one.
it was a nice dive into the author's journey and put it against your own.
4/5, i'm always here for some self love poetry
Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing, for the E-ARC of this book
2.75 or 3. I liked this book. I found it was more like a mix between poetry and a self-help book. I mean, it’s kinda basic but the messages in this book are important. And I think we forget them a little too much.
The only real mistake I did: Reading it when I’m feeling more neutral than feminine, and that's not the author's fault.
A great book to keep on your bedside table and read a few pages every night. Even though some poems may sound a little obvious and repetitive, sometimes these words are all you need to hear. I loved it!
* Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing an advance copy.
Rating: 5 🌟
First and first, I'd like to express my gratitude to Netgalley for providing me with an e-ARC of this copy.
Without a question, this is one of my favorite poetry collections of 2021.
The major concept of this poetry is SELF LOVE, and I love how the words were elegantly shown and poetry was created from it. Furthermore, this book introduces a novel concept of thinkers and feelers.
If you're looking for good poetry to lift your spirits up, this book is the one. This is an amazing poetry collection regarding self love and healing. There are some really good poems, some really good advices we should all follow in order to live a happier life. This book is mindfulness in form of poetry.
First, I think this book is better read at a slower pace - picking it up sporadically. If you read it in one sitting, which is usually so easy with poetry, it will seem a bit repetitive at times.
However, I absolutely adored the concept of two poems around a central theme - but one is written for the left, logical brain, while the other used more flowery language and metaphors for the right side of the brain. Such a unique concept. (And I definitely felt validated that I am a left thinker - I enjoyed the gut punch of the straightforward language, rather than the flowery prose.)
I loved the concepts of the book, around self-love and acceptance. These poems are definitely something so many women may find power in reading.
